somiaj 2017-01-29 08:45:32
oh duh....I still need to wake up.
jelly 2017-01-29 08:45:38
(ignore the Also part, Qantourisc)
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:47:02
mainly puzzeled how a init system can be so weird, sometimes it reports failures, sometimes it ignores it
somiaj 2017-01-29 08:52:58
Qantourisc: I have found systemd to be nice once I figured out where to look for information.
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:53:20
somiaj: can find my info, i'm just puzzled how start/restart gives no errors
somiaj 2017-01-29 08:53:35
did you look at systemctl status lighthttpd
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:54:23
somiaj: well I know where to get the error messages
jelly 2017-01-29 08:54:30
Qantourisc: start and restart with systemd do not wait for an exit status, they're just asynchronous commands asking something to do some stuff
nickgaw 2017-01-29 08:54:34
Hi, I liked pine but have been using alpine but think that package is no longer being developt is there another renamed version that is still getting work done on it?
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:55:18
jelly: ow, start and prey, thanks /me gets used to running /etc/init.d/service <> && ps -aux | grep service
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:56:31
differnt question: I need a single packge from testing, just added testing, but this became slow, my PC just to small (it's a VM) or shouldn't I have done that ?
somiaj 2017-01-29 08:56:44
you don't want to install packages from testing in stable, make a backport
jelly 2017-01-29 08:56:53
Qantourisc: do NOT do that
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:57:03
jelly: feared as much
jelly 2017-01-29 08:57:15
if stuff got installed already, reimage
jelly 2017-01-29 08:57:53
if you have an installation of debian, only use repos made for that specific release
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:59:12
jelly: also sounds quite drastic to reimage if you installed 1 package that is non-essential :p
jelly 2017-01-29 08:59:46
Qantourisc: not at all. That one package may have pulled in dependencies galore and replaced important components
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 08:59:58
jelly: the it's not 1 package
jelly 2017-01-29 09:00:08
what
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:00:25
jelly: then one installed more then 1 package if it pulled in deps
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:00:40
(deps pulled in I consider extra package installed)
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:00:51
then again, I doubt it's going to be possible to do that without pulling in deps
jelly 2017-01-29 09:01:02
you think users look at what apt does when they do "apt-get install onepackage" ?
Aebian 2017-01-29 09:01:13
I accidebtly forgot the new in front of my tmux session. Now I have the session but I'm not sure how to access it because tmux a -t is not working. Is there a way to attach to an session using the pid? Currently it looks like this: https://img.knight-industries.org/2017-01-29_14-59-22.png (I want the -S srvupdate window attached again)
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:01:14
I do :p
jelly 2017-01-29 09:01:30
Qantourisc: good job!
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:01:35
:p
jelly 2017-01-29 09:01:58
(in general, don't do it again)
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:02:05
What is the best process for making a full image backup of Debian stable so if something breaks I can just reimage and it would be as if the problem never happened?
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:02:22
jelly: ow don't worry the machine was to slow to even resolve it in a reasonable timespan :D
jelly 2017-01-29 09:02:24
nickgaw: a snapshot of that VM?
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:02:26
jelly: thy
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:02:28
*ty
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:02:56
I am using a physical system not a virtual machine.
jelly 2017-01-29 09:03:09
then you can't use the best process
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:03:17
nickgaw: single FS on brtfs -> btrfs snapshot
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:03:29
nickgaw: single FS on non-snapshot capable fs -> no best way
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:03:33
I am using ext4 single partition.
jelly 2017-01-29 09:04:00
not even LVM?
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:04:02
nickgaw: then you should shutdown, to copy if you want to things correctly
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:04:43
What imaging programs exist for Linux that run in a text console like from a live disc?
jelly 2017-01-29 09:06:19
,v alpine
judd 2017-01-29 09:06:20
Package: alpine on amd64 -- wheezy: 2.02+dfsg-2; jessie: 2.11+dfsg1-3; stretch: 2.20+dfsg1-7; sid: 2.20+dfsg1-7
Varegotch 2017-01-29 09:06:42
Hi!
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:07:20
There is no such thing as an image program like the old ghost for linux?
jklmnop1 2017-01-29 09:07:36
Good evening Varegotch
jelly 2017-01-29 09:07:43
nickgaw: it looks like alpine is still being maintained, 2.11 and 2.20 come from http://patches.freeiz.com/alpine/release/
Qantourisc 2017-01-29 09:07:45
nickgaw: yes, don't recall the name
missmbob 2017-01-29 09:07:49
!clonezilla
dpkg 2017-01-29 09:07:49
Clonezilla Live is a live CD based on Debian, providing disk/partition cloning functionality similar to Symantec Ghost. Basically a front-end to , , , sfdisk and others. http://www.clonezilla.org/ See also .
jelly 2017-01-29 09:08:21
has anyone actually used clonezilla and can attest it's stable and works well?
missmbob 2017-01-29 09:08:39
not for 10 years
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:08:58
That sounds like what I am looking for
jelly 2017-01-29 09:08:59
if it takes 10 yeas to do something with it...
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:10:43
Are there pay program that do the same thing as clonezilla and that are still being maintained?
somiaj 2017-01-29 09:11:12
nickgaw: what is your goal? Sometimes coppying the data on the file system is more efficent than cloning the whole partition/disk
somiaj 2017-01-29 09:11:27
plus gives you a bit more freedom in recovery.
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:11:53
making it into an image that if I break the system I can go back to that image that is compressed to save space on a hard drive or a set of DVD discs.
awal1 2017-01-29 09:12:51
how to make i3 use two keys for the modifier?
missmbob 2017-01-29 09:12:58
nickgaw: for "pay" tools easeus does cloning
Heston 2017-01-29 09:16:46
is /var/log/messages wiped every week?
Varegotch 2017-01-29 09:18:48
Hi!
Varegotch 2017-01-29 09:18:53
I need help... UWU
nickgaw 2017-01-29 09:19:10
Would e2image work?
Varegotch 2017-01-29 09:20:05
eh? x.x
zykotick9 2017-01-29 09:22:57
vaktpost: if you have a question (about debian) you should ask it.
zykotick9 2017-01-29 09:23:14
vaktpost: sorry, Varegotch already left i take it.
