ddybing 2017-01-30 13:59:37
Hi! I'm having a problem with isc-dhcp-server on Debian. May I ask the question here?
sstar 2017-01-30 14:01:10
at least you can ask me
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:32:05
There a way to use Jessie on Skylake? Like, use my iGPU to its full potential?
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:32:24
or should I just wait for Stretch
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:32:46
maybe not full potential, but you can get a new kernel and xserver-xorg-video-intel from jessie-backports wich support skylake
jelly 2017-01-30 14:32:56
unlikely to be full support, but getting kernel and xorg drivers from jessie-backports may just make things usable
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:33:05
lol
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:33:12
gosh jelly
jelly 2017-01-30 14:33:30
nauticalnexus: /msg dpkg jessie-backports, /msg dpkg bdo kernel
missmbob 2017-01-30 14:33:33
throw mesa in there
jelly 2017-01-30 14:33:43
and also: firmware and xserver-xorg-video-intel
jelly 2017-01-30 14:33:51
I don't think there are backports of mesa
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:33:56
mad_hatter: and the kernel and packages from jessie-backports? REboot, check it worked, look at dmesg | grep firmware and 'ip addr' and it should list your wifi device. AFter that you need to manually configure it
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:33:57
hmm
jelly 2017-01-30 14:33:59
,v libgl1-mesa-dri
judd 2017-01-30 14:34:00
Package: libgl1-mesa-dri on amd64 -- wheezy: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; wheezy-security: 8.0.5-4+deb7u2; jessie: 10.3.2-1+deb8u1; jessie-backports: 12.0.4-2~bpo8+1; stretch: 13.0.3-1; sid: 13.0.3-1; experimental: 17.0.0~rc2-1
jelly 2017-01-30 14:34:04
or maybe there are
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:34:09
but it's 12 :(
jelly 2017-01-30 14:34:21
probably better than 10.3.2
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:34:24
there are backports for mesa, but it takes a bit of work to get it installed (lots of libs)
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:34:48
I like libs
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:34:50
I doubt you need firmware, or I don't recall intel gpu's needing formware, just newer kms module from a kernel.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:34:59
TomTomTosch, actually no, it's worse than xserver-xorg-video-intel
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:03
don't spread false info pls
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:34
somiaj, jelly can I get newer plasma-desktop through backports?
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:38
wait.. the command..
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:41
.v plasma-desktop
jelly 2017-01-30 14:35:42
nope
missmbob 2017-01-30 14:35:43
no
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:45
aw
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:35:47
afiak xserver-xorg-video-intel is beign replaced by xserver-xorg-video-modsetting, but this isn't backported so the version in jessie might not be up to par.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:35:52
I like plasma 5
jelly 2017-01-30 14:35:58
kde is a big pile of poo
TomTomTosch 2017-01-30 14:36:02
alright.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:36:04
D: jelly !!
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:36:05
nauticalnexus: no, DEs are to large and interconnected, I have yet to see one backported.
jelly 2017-01-30 14:36:16
backports focus on easily isolated components
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:36:34
how am I gonna get my sweet KDE 5 then!? D:
jelly 2017-01-30 14:36:41
in stretch
jelly 2017-01-30 14:36:55
when it's out
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:37:26
nauticalnexus: stretch is almost frozen, there are still a good number of rc-bugs floating around, but biggest draw back in stretch is no timely security support.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:38:05
well this sucks
missmbob 2017-01-30 14:38:40
somiaj: is xserver-xorg-video-modsetting supposed to exist?
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:39:06
missmbob: sorry it is modesetting -- I always mess that one up
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:39:35
aparentally a more standarized interface to talk directly to kms drivers, the stretch xserver-xorg-video-intel package suggests using it for newer intel gpu's, though I haven't tested it
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:40:13
I dunno what to do I'm in distro limbo :o
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:40:48
nauticalnexus: choice is yours, stable + backports will work while you wait for stretch to release, or just use stretch with its limitations, mostly security support (which isn't as big of a deal on desktops)
nikfarm 2017-01-30 14:43:25
Hello, I'm trying to "stream" a simple webcam output with "python -m SimpleHTTPServer (port)" using a symlink from the local directory using "ln -s /dev/video0 index.html" so I should be able to view it through my browser, however this is not working, what is going wrong?
nikfarm 2017-01-30 14:43:47
I added read permissions to /dev/video0 for others
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:43:49
somiaj, idk, I'm pretty comfy on Sid, but I just had my first "hardlock" and I DID NOT like it one bit
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:44:22
but I have Skylake so I need more recent software stuffs
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:44:32
nauticalnexus: Feb 5th is the final date on the freeze, after that is it is just RC bugs, so it is a matter of what you prefer.
somiaj 2017-01-30 14:44:50
nauticalnexus: I've seen people get skylake working with jessie-backports as I suggested, but it might not give full gpu/opengl for say gaming.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:44:59
yeah I do gaming sometimes.
nauticalnexus 2017-01-30 14:45:05
