#debian channel featuring somiaj, nikfarm, sstar, buenouanq, bolt, AlexLikeRock,

nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:49:41
or is it 205kB will be used after using the archives of 102MB?
nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:49:55
and thus removing 102MB of archives again
bolt 2017-01-30 18:50:12
nikfarm: you can remove the archives yourself. /var/cache/apt/...
bolt 2017-01-30 18:50:19
nikfarm: or simply "apt-get clean"
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:50:58
nikfarm: cauclation is based only off the install size without the archive reported by the package
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:51:21
nikfarm: this may also leave out size of additional config files and other stuff (that is assoicated with but not part of the package)
nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:51:23
somiaj: so in my case 205kB
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:51:28
correct
nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:51:32
thanks!
nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:52:09
how is it possible though that 102MB will be downloaded to eventually only use 205kB of it
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:52:25
debian packages are .ar archives which have some compression
nikfarm 2017-01-30 18:53:06
that's some impressive compression then
sstar 2017-01-30 18:53:25
hm
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:53:26
text files have lots of room to compress, binaries not so much, so kinda depends on the package. Some contain lots of text data
sstar 2017-01-30 18:53:32
a debian live usb stick wouldnt be bad
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:54:07
somiaj, o/
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:54:53
sstar: there are debian live images out there, though debian doens't have a robust live setup, the images may be limited compared to other live distros.
sstar 2017-01-30 18:55:10
well
sstar 2017-01-30 18:55:23
i only need a working bootloader an initrd and a linux kernel
sstar 2017-01-30 18:55:28
to boot from disk
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:56:09
sstar: live images don't have efi boot, so if you have to boot efi they won't work, but debian does have live images you can get if needed.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:57:26
i install hplip
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:57:29
and not open
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:57:37
and hplip-gui
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:57:40
and not open
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:58:10
terminal say : " hplip-gui: command not found "
somiaj 2017-01-30 18:58:46
AlexLikeRock: dpkg -L hplip-gui -- check what hte actuall binary it installed is
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:59:33
http://paste.debian.net/911772/
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 18:59:35
somiaj,
buenouanq 2017-01-30 19:00:10
I need help with this wireless dongle.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:00:27
tanks
bolt 2017-01-30 19:00:48
nikfarm: you are downloading updates
bolt 2017-01-30 19:00:59
nikfarm: the packages will replace existing files
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:01:01
tanks somiaj now its open, by : /usr/share/menu/hplip-gui
buenouanq 2017-01-30 19:01:01
If it's plugged in and I try to open or run something, it get `stuck' loading until I unplug it.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:01:14
its xtrange, they not open at terminal
bolt 2017-01-30 19:01:29
nikfarm: thus the downloaded size is a lot larger than the end result. you can also get messages saying a negative amount of space will be used, for the same reason
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:01:31
AlexLikeRock: near the end, hp-foo are the binaries it installed, and it looks like hp-systray is what is meant to be autostart, which you can check the .desktop file /etc/xdg/autostart/hplip-systray.desktop for details
nikfarm 2017-01-30 19:01:44
bolt: I thought that had things to do with it too, 102MB to 205kB sounded quantum-like
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:02:15
somiaj, tanks,
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:02:16
AlexLikeRock: that is just the old debian menu method entry that is probabaly running hp-systray which is what the autostart .desktop file will do, though you may have to login to do that if it didn't start when isntalling the package.
bolt 2017-01-30 19:02:17
nikfarm: ..and in the wrong direction. compressing 205kB to 102MB would be the worst compression algorithm in the world
nikfarm 2017-01-30 19:02:34
bolt: yeah :D
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:02:57
somiaj, yes , but , its stupid, NOT OPEN BY TERMINAL
nikfarm 2017-01-30 19:03:00
"anticompression"
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:03:03
any program
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:03:17
do you agree with me ?
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:03:30
AlexLikeRock: what do you mean? Just because the binary name is not hplip-gui, that is just a package name.
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:03:53
AlexLikeRock: /usr/share/applications/hplip.desktop -- look at that to see what the binary it actually runs is
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:04:44
ok, look :
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:04:46
$ hplip
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:04:46
bash: hplip: command not found
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:04:59
tha NAME its hplip
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:05:04
and not open
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:05:11
that package contained no binary called hplip
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:05:38
well
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:05:44
it contained a lot of binaries of the form hp-foo and for ease of use contained an autostart entry and a menu entry for the user to just select it form the menu if they didn't want to look up the binary
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:05:45
how its the stupid ?
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:05:49
I'm tell you how to look up the binary.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:05:51
programer or me ?
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:06:06
AlexLikeRock: not all binary names match packages. Sometimes a package is a collection of binaries
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:06:48
so... must be start EASY ! , please , we are a billions of NOVICE user
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:07:14
well
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:07:18
any way
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:07:35
its a point of observation
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:07:45
end of theme , please :-D
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:07:56
AlexLikeRock: enough of this. It provides a menu entry and a autostart .desktop file, to me it seems like it does start easy if you use what it applies.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-30 19:08:17
ok fine :-D
somiaj 2017-01-30 19:08:22
but yes if you want to run the binary directly, it helsp to know its name, hence look at the .desktop file to see what it is ruuning, my guess is hp-systray
