oops
nChomsky 2017-01-29 13:47:02
Now when I use the command "nmcli d" wlan shows up as unavailable.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 13:47:15
wlan0*

CodeMachine, for your info: ufw status for check ufw/firewall state. man ufw will teach you more; but the gui (gufw) it self is for enable/disable it, or for play with the rules (after root authentication). but don't play with it if you don't know what you do; better use defaults :P
CodeMachine 2017-01-29 13:51:32
awal1: Alright :) Thanks. I think I will leave it for now, I guess it's good enough as default?
awal1 2017-01-29 13:51:45
Default means: deny incoming, allow outgoing
CodeMachine 2017-01-29 13:52:32
awal1: What does incoming actually mean? I can stil download stuff when it's denied, isn't that "incoming" traffic?
awal1 2017-01-29 13:52:34
that's wiser for standard use
awal1 2017-01-29 13:53:43
CodeMachine, all will be fine. sorry, I must leave now; someone will explain you maybe
CodeMachine 2017-01-29 13:54:19
awal1: I'll duckduckgo it when there is time :) Thanks.

nChomsky 2017-01-29 13:56:15
Someone available to help me with my Netowrk Manager not finding wi-fi connections? :(
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:07:42
Hello?
bazhang 2017-01-29 14:08:23
hi
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:08:24
nChomsky, I hear you, but don't know how to help
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:08:58
:*(
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:13:16
nChomsky: does ifconfig -a or iwconfig show the interface?
klys 2017-01-29 14:13:28
nchomsky, iwlist wlan0 scan | less
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:14:06
Yes epsilon.
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:14:39
do you have any error message in dmesg telling you to install a wifi driver?
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:15:18
klys, the return was "(END)"
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:16:12
Error message? Is dmesg a command?
klys 2017-01-29 14:17:06
nchomsky, yes
klys 2017-01-29 14:17:37
nchomsky, see if you have a message about a firmware file that should be somewhere in /lib/firmware with dmesg | less
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:18:15
A long list appeared.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:18:32
No warnings or errors...
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:19:22
did the wifi worked ealier, or is this a new install using wifi the first time?
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:20:06
The wi-fi worked earlier, the last thing I did with an internet connection was,
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:20:55
to install that netsomething from debian stable repository, that tests the speed of debian mirrors returning you the fastest.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:21:19
I had even used it, the internet then stopped working.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:21:29
I restarted.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:21:40
Rebooted, I mean.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:21:52
Didn't work.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:22:34
Then I saw that wlan0 was listed in /etc/interfaces
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:23:49
And in NetworkManager.conf, "managed" was set to "false".
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:24:40
I tried deleting The wlan0 description from the interfaces file,
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:26:13
is the wlan0 interface up? (AKA it's listed in ifconfig without -a)
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:26:20
Didn't work, it went from "unmanaged" to "unavailable" with the command "nmcli d".
missmbob 2017-01-29 14:26:22
nChomsky: why dont you set it to true to networkmanager can manage it?
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:26:46
After that, I did.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:27:28
Its now set to true and the interfaces file has no description of the wlan0
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:28:32
Epsion, it is listed on ifconfig.
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:28:40
assumed the wlan0 interface is up and you have AP near you, does "iw dev wlan0 scan" return something?
budder 2017-01-29 14:29:54
hello
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:30:12
It returns... a lot.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:30:38
I'm scrolling to the top, are you looking for a particular information?
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:30:42
the the device is working... sounds like an issue of netwok manager
missmbob 2017-01-29 14:30:53
nChomsky: after setting it to true you restarted?
epsilon 2017-01-29 14:31:00
no, just the fact wlan0 is finding AP
budder 2017-01-29 14:31:29
i'm installing debian for the first time. I am not using the graphical installation. I at the part asking about installing additional software. none of the DE's are selected (gnome, xfce, kde, cinnamon, etc). I'm a little lost. Shouldn't one of them be selected by default? (i'm new to linux)
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:31:44
I did, tried sudo service NetworkManager restart, and also stop and start.
bazhang 2017-01-29 14:31:59
budder the net install?
budder 2017-01-29 14:32:16
no just regulat install off of USB
tomcres 2017-01-29 14:32:35
budder there is no default. It's up to you to pick the one you like
bazhang 2017-01-29 14:32:35
budder what size is the 'regular'
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:33:05
Check GNOME budder!
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:33:13
It is AWESOME.
budder 2017-01-29 14:33:20
bazhang: I don't know what the size is. But I mean will it even allow me to advance without selecting one?
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:33:22
X)
tomcres 2017-01-29 14:33:41
budder, you can select nothing, but then you don't get a desktop environment. all you get is the text console.
budder 2017-01-29 14:33:42
tomcres: do I HAVE to pick one though? would it let me install if i don't?
budder 2017-01-29 14:34:45
tomcres: that would be advanced users right? I am curious to what that looks like. but for now I should just go ahead and pick one right? would it be easy to change it afterwards?
bazhang 2017-01-29 14:35:02
very easy
budder 2017-01-29 14:35:03
nChomsky: okay i'll do GNOME
tomcres 2017-01-29 14:35:05
budder, absolutely. it's not marriage. you can change, add, remove any time you like
budder 2017-01-29 14:35:32
oh wait
budder 2017-01-29 14:35:44
Debian desktop environment is selected
budder 2017-01-29 14:35:48
i believe that was default
budder 2017-01-29 14:36:44
so i'll stick with this for now and try the others later. However, print server and standard system utilities are the other options selected. should I select anything else (web server, SSH server)?
missmbob 2017-01-29 14:37:06
that'll be gnome
tomcres 2017-01-29 14:37:11
budder, up to you. I like to have SSH server so if something goes wrong, I can SSH in from my tablet.
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:37:20
i wouldn't preinstall a bunch of stuff
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:37:33
install your software after the initial debian install
bazhang 2017-01-29 14:37:50
why not the net install
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:38:36
Epsilon, so my computer sees the network.
budder 2017-01-29 14:38:59
bazhang: what exctly is the net install?
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:39:04
are there install images that include wifi blobs and such?
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:39:17
i'm sure not the official debian ones because DFSG
tomcres 2017-01-29 14:39:23
RickHull, yes there are
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:39:23
so the libmateweather in Jessie is 1.8.0, this is the lib that powers the mate weather and clock applets displaying weather info, but the site it gets its info from is gone, the problem is fixed as of verion 1.14.0, how can this be resolved in jessie?
missmbob 2017-01-29 14:39:27
!firmware iso
dpkg 2017-01-29 14:39:27
Unofficial images - containing non-free Debian packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also .
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:39:40
ah cool!
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:39:53
a backports is not available, and a simple sid backport is not doable on this package
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:40:48
patch the jessie source?
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:41:30
hmm..
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:41:33
i.e. abandon hope of 1.14
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:42:09
well sid has 1.16 but doing a build-dep on that told me the deps aren't satisfyable due to no version of the mate-common
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:42:19
thats when I was trying to do a ssb on it
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:42:26
Oh, another thing!
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:43:01
netinst is pretty cool. it's just a tiny installer that assumes you can download the rest
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:43:10
The folder /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ is empty.
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:43:18
Is that normal?
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:43:40
mine has the networks I've saved
jscoder 2017-01-29 14:43:43
there is also the possibility of upgrading to testing because it should be freezing soon, and it has the 1.16 as well
nChomsky 2017-01-29 14:43:56
Ah, I see.
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:44:27
jscoder, i believe the debian model says to patch the jessie version to fix the package for jessie
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:44:39
s/jessie/stable/
RickHull 2017-01-29 14:45:04
not wholesale upgrades that bring other features
