#debian channel featuring jhutchins, CodeMachine, peterrooney, teraflops, dpkg, judd, and 8 others.

peterrooney 2017-01-28 09:45:26
RickHull: I've not seen it in crontab itself, but _depending on your shell_, you could sleep $RANDOM % 60 before the command
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:45:52
yeah, that's what I've found googling. I could have *sworn* this was a feature
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:46:30
it's not necessary for this case, but it made me try to find the docs for it, which apparently are a figment of my imagination
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:47:51
I've tried the debian stable->testing, but when I boot, it fails to start console-setup service. Also, it spits out error messages about not being able to connect to lvmetad when booting(using lvm on luks)
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:47:54
i thought it was some kind of sigil like %R or %RANDOM. you could have the */x spec just guarantee the interval and distribute the start offset
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:48:27
My procedure was to install stable, select nothing during the "select and install software" stage, and then do an apt-get update && apt-get dist-ugprade
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:49:07
What should I do to fix the console-setup and the problem with lvmetad on boot?
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:50:33
maybe it's different now, but i would have done update, upgrade. then reboot. then dist-upgrade. then reboot. make sure to capture startup logs
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:51:13
did it boot ok before the dist-upgrade with lvm ?
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:51:22
or has the lvm stuff never worked?
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:51:27
I mean, it still boots fine. Just... more errors.
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:51:42
boot, errors, type in password, continue booting.
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:51:44
i know squat about lvm. i'm just spitballing
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:51:49
console-setup fails, continue booting.
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:52:46
oh, and console-setup fails saying that it couldn't find a file in /tmp
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:52:57
but works fine if I restart it after booting
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:53:13
sounds like a race condition on storage init
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:53:31
missing some dependency / wait / block / activation ?
jhutchins 2017-01-28 09:53:54
!debian-next
dpkg 2017-01-28 09:53:56
#debian-next is the channel for testing/unstable support on the OFTC network (irc.oftc.net), *not* on Freenode. If you get "Cannot join #debian-next (Channel is invite only)." it means you did not read it's on irc.oftc.net.
jhutchins 2017-01-28 09:54:12
likcoras: Sounds like your test successfully found a problem.
jhutchins 2017-01-28 09:54:21

judd 2017-01-28 09:54:22
Available kernel versions are: experimental: 4.8.0-rc8-686-pae (4.8~rc8-1~exp1); sid: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.2-2); stretch: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.2-2); jessie-backports: 4.8.0-0.bpo.2-686-pae (4.8.15-2~bpo8+2); jessie: 3.16.0-4-686-pae (3.16.39-1); wheezy-backports: 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae (3.16.39-1~bpo70+1); wheezy: 3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.84-1)
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:54:46
Eh, testing not supported here? Welp.
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:55:02
it's fine, #debian-next on OFTC is active
jhutchins 2017-01-28 09:55:19
likcoras: Generally supported, but -next has more testing users and more info on the current state.
likcoras 2017-01-28 09:55:36
Huh, I see...
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 10:04:03
I was curious on cinnamon vs gnome 3? I love how my Mac shows me my email notifications, facebook, etc... something I also liked about Unity. Gnome 3 on debian should do this just fine, correct? Something if I recall when using cinnamon that it didn't do as well
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:05:11
My script is for a display to show the ip and it functions with "sudo lcddispip" but adding it to /etc/rc.local is not executing it at boot. I also added a /usr/bin/lcddisp
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:05:28
What am I missing there?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:09:01
antisaint: show the script and what you put in /etc/rc.local? also why rc.local (wheezy?)? is your script a service? why dont you write a proper systemd unit file instead?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:09:27
Little bit over my head... One sec
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:10:03
antisaint: please, if youre going to pastebin it don't use pastebin.com
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:10:15
:/ erm
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:10:53
or yeah go use it, but I wont click on the link :D
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 10:11:19
How do I delete a file using nano in terminal?
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 10:11:59
Or any other way to delete a file that I can't delete threw "files" ;d
likcoras 2017-01-28 10:12:07
CodeMachine: rm
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:12:22

CodeMachine 2017-01-28 10:12:38
ah sweet, thanks.
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:12:47
Thats my c thats compiled and tossed in as just the name in the rc.local
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:13:30
exec is put /usr/bin/lcddispip
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:14:16
antisaint: k, does it work if you just run the binary by hand?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:14:24
Yes but only as sudo
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:14:42
I also /usr/local/sbin/lcddisp.sh with #!bin/bash /usr/bin/lcddispip
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:14:50
antisaint: under Xorg? or just tty?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:15:14
I have vnc but x is prolly running. I am only ssh right now tho
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:15:59
Headless knock off pi ;)
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:16:31
antisaint: what I meant is: it's that supposed to be run under xorg or not?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:17:05
The exec? no. X should boot at runtime tho. Not sure why x matters at all to be frank
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:17:41
antisaint: then I have no idea why it does not run if you put it on /etc/rc.local
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:18:06
antisaint: to be honest I dont kno what it does at all (the binary)
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:18:16
The prog is in the cryptbin and is to pull ip and dsplay it on a 16x2 external lcd. It is not running as root is my asumption..
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:18:38
Is the rc.local to hold the exec or the sh file?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:20:04
antisaint: try it
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:22:51
My ssh does start at boot, it has /etc/init.d/ssh start but my vnc needs to be manualy started and its just vnc4serv.. is that my prob?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:23:03
Same for the lcddispip
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:23:48
antisaint: sorry I dont follow you
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:24:18
It appears to work when calling the vnc service. Do I need to create a service for this to function at boot?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:24:59
antisaint: are you using debian? which branch?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:25:06
Jessie
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:26:53
antisaint: it looks like a good idea
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:26:58
same for your binary
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:27:28
antisaint: I say systemd unit because is way easier than an init script
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:27:52
(at least for me)
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:29:49
antisaint: tightvncserver?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:30:24
um... vnc4?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:30:46
No tightvnc :)
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:30:52
no idea, what did you install?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:31:06
vnc4server ;)
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:31:34
ok
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:32:26
antisaint: indeed there's systemd unit/init.d script for vnc4server
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:32:31
no*
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:33:42
:? I just want to not have to login to the unknown Ip rather have it displayed at boot time on its external screen... I got the code to make the bin and got the bin running as sudo.. how the hell do I get it to run at boot as su?
unborn 2017-01-28 10:36:44
,v cron-apt
judd 2017-01-28 10:36:45
Package: cron-apt on amd64 -- wheezy: 0.9.1; jessie: 0.9.2; stretch: 0.9.6; stretch: 0.10.0; sid: 0.10.0
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:39:10
like just logging in as root via ssh and running lcddispip works great... how to automate?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:39:52
antisaint: what you run in /etc/rc.local is run as root …
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:40:13
but its not... Is that upon boot or login?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:40:29
it is run as root
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:40:37
Did not answer
njimiuo 2017-01-28 10:40:40
I have a device that reads bootcode from the sd slot, but the sd in it is very small, however, it has 4 usb slots (large usb devices) ; how can I let it boot from sd and let the usb take over (thus using the usb to store packages, home folders, etc)
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:41:20
antisaint: login?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:42:05
antisaint: if you want it to be run when user login use a systemd --user unit
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:42:09
looking for it to show after network dhcp issues the ip maybe thats the hang if its doing boot, or I also want it before login, there is another
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 10:42:20
Hello. I made a USB flash drive using Rufus for Debian, trying to install on an ultrabook. I had Windows installed in legacy BIOS mode. Just switched it over to UEFI. Laptop isn't recognizing the flash drive I made as a boot device. Any ideas? Wanting to install in UEFI mode versus legacy bios.
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:42:29
Bios
njimiuo 2017-01-28 10:43:00
Mitchell92: did you enable the boot flag on the usb?
TomTomTo1 2017-01-28 10:43:17
njimiuo: easiest way is to set it up in the partitioning tool in the installer. if it's an already installed system you will have to create a partition manually, move the directory and adjust /etc/fstab accordingly.
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:43:20
antisaint: the more yoy talk about your issue the more is looking to me a huge xy problem
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:43:23
you*
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 10:43:23
i had assumed the software would have done that. I suppose I didn't, njimiuo ... Now do I do that?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:43:31
xy?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:43:38
!xy
dpkg 2017-01-28 10:43:39
Slow down for a bit! Are you sure that you need to jump through that particular hoop to achieve your goal? We suspect you don't, so why don't you back up a bit and tell us about the overall objective... We know that people often falsely diagnose problems because they are too close to them -- it's easy to miss that there is a better way to proceed. See http://mywiki.wooledge.org/XyProblem
njimiuo 2017-01-28 10:44:06
Mitchell92: no idea if the software did it, did the software format it?
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:44:20
I was sure that asking how to get a exec at boot was fairly simple
Plushwolf 2017-01-28 10:44:29
According to your wiki article https://wiki.debian.org/DebianStretch the full freeze of Debian Stretch will be at 05.02. -- does that mean Stretch will be finally released, or is it just the final freeze and no new package versions etc will join the repository except security and bug fixes?
teraflops 2017-01-28 10:44:33
sure…
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 10:44:55
njimiuo, yes. At the same time on windows on another machine, which is running on UEFI mode, it doesn't say that GPT is being used on the flash drive.
antisaint 2017-01-28 10:45:12
Calling it runs, and I am pointed towards rc.local... am i f*&ink this sideways?
