n4dir 2017-01-29 23:45:24
to keep it short: imho, in general: yes, that is right
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:45:40
trotski2000, if you run testing, be prepared to fix stuff.
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:46:06
apt-get install apt-listbugs will keep a lot of problems out ...
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:46:08
actually… also be prepared to fix stuff if you run stable… but the good thing in stable is, that it then stays fixed for 2-3 years
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:46:44
Iridos: fix it, or wait for it to be fixed from the repos ... :-)
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:46:44
this is how my sources.list looks:
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:46:54
https://www.irccloud.com/pastebin/c28iZton/
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:47:30
I don't mind fixing stuff if the fixes are available and well documented
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:47:32
trotski2000: you only need the src-lines if you plan to install packages from source
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:48:08
not that it would matter much ...
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:49:02
no contrib or non-free, RMS would be proud :-)
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:49:22
:)
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:51:26
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUnstable#What_are_some_best_practices_for_testing.2Fsid_users.3F i guess that is an ok overview
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:54:14
n4dir: thanks
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:56:52
n4dir: how does apt-listbugs work?
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:59:46
i see, it warns you if there is any bug in the packages being upgraded
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:00:20
iirc: i do "apt-get update && apt-get upgrade" (or dist-upgrade), and it will list *known* bugs before i hit enter when getting asked "proceed?" Round the lines of that
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:00:38
ups, too slow ... you figured it already :-)
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:00:54
must be a known bug, but that already helps often
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:01:28
anyone here using fail2ban?, how should i setup fail2ban to be kind to external workers?
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:01:58
make sure they learn their passwords or use certificates?
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:02:20
what do I need to do to mount a FAT filesystem on Debian?
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:02:25
mugglez: iirc default setup is fine (ban after 3 failed login-attempts and not for that long?)
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:02:49
I have a USB stick and it's not mounting
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:03:00
NoxiousPloK: i guess i didnt think about why it happens. i guess i should take a look at why he keeps failing to connect.
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:03:14
heh :)
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:03:35
I get "mount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'" error message from mount
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:05:26
!ntfs-3g ?
dpkg 2017-01-30 00:05:26
NTFS-3G is a userspace driver providing NTFS read and write support. "aptitude install ntfs-3g". Usage examples: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-download/#usage . Also ask me about .
n4dir 2017-01-30 00:05:37
not sure
jelly 2017-01-30 00:05:56
CRM114: that ought to work unless you have a custom kernel. Which debian release is this?
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:06:05
Jessie, pretty much defalut
jelly 2017-01-30 00:06:22
CRM114: did you reboot after the last kernel upgrade/patches?
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:06:39
jelly: not sure
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:06:55
she system has been up for 14 days
jelly 2017-01-30 00:06:57
CRM114: what does "uname -a" say
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:07:20
12:06:27 up 14 days, 51 min, 4 users, load average: 0.09, 0.12, 0.13
jelly 2017-01-30 00:07:35
that's "uptime" not "uname -a"
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:07:53
ups
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:08:09
3.16.0-4-686-pae #1 SMP Debian 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 (2016-10-19) i686 GNU/Linux
jelly 2017-01-30 00:08:45
not the latest, so there's a possibility you patched it up since
CRM114 2017-01-30 00:08:58
ok, I'll reboot then
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:13:12
NoxiousPloK: any idea how to check why fail2ban chose to ban something?
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:13:25
fail2ban.log is just full of ips, which does not help me so much
Aebian 2017-01-30 00:15:37
hey guys, I accidently did sudo rm -r on a folder. There is no undo option for that right?
Urchin 2017-01-30 00:15:51
Aebian: nope
jelly 2017-01-30 00:16:00
Aebian: not unless you have backups
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:14
mugglez: afaik there are some fail2ban log parsers.. but its been ages since I played with it
Aebian 2017-01-30 00:16:17
not for that folder then uhm yeah gg
Aebian 2017-01-30 00:16:23
thx
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:29
http://www.the-art-of-web.com/system/fail2ban-log/
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:31
or that
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:33
@ mugglez
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:40
my workday is over so I'm going afk ;-)
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:43
good luck!
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:16:53
NoxiousPloK: thanks ill read it :)
Urchin 2017-01-30 00:16:56
jelly: btw, thanks, it worked
NoxiousPloK 2017-01-30 00:16:59
:)
mugglez 2017-01-30 00:16:59
have a nice day!
jelly 2017-01-30 00:17:30
you're welcome, even if don't remember what for
Urchin 2017-01-30 00:18:03
jelly: I'm CRM114
deni 2017-01-30 00:21:20
does anyone have issue with xscreensaver not locking the screen immediately after resuming from suspend?
deni 2017-01-30 00:21:46
sometimes there's a noticeable lag and I can see the screen and sometimes if I move the mouse before it kicks in it doesn't lock at all
deni 2017-01-30 00:22:11
all the bug reports I've found are from like 2013 and marked as fixed so I'm not sure what's going on
deni 2017-01-30 00:22:37
one comment noted that pm-utils is not installed and that this might be the reason? Is pm-utils still something that's used on debian?
deni 2017-01-30 00:22:45
(with the systemd migration and all)
bolt 2017-01-30 00:34:16
Aebian: you might be able to use an undelete tool, given your file system wasn't modified after the delete
jolt 2017-01-30 00:38:07
deni: I added a lock script in /etc/acpi/events for lid close, just to be sure
deni 2017-01-30 00:39:56
jolt: I have HandleLidSwitch=suspend in /etc/systemd/logind.conf
deni 2017-01-30 00:40:02
I'm not sure how those 2 would colide then
