RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:45:17
How do i do thst
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:45:19
i don't know. you can try one thing at a time.
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:45:35
apt -t jessie-backports install linux-image-amd64
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:45:45
apt -t jessie-backports install nvidia-driver
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:45:50
Oh ok
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:45:58
Let me try
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:46:34
SynrG: pleae tell me how to add those three dvd too
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:48:27
i have them at /root/Desktop/ https://usercontent.irccloud-cdn.com/file/OxQfbtMu/irccloudcapture600286695.jpg
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:48:50
How do i add packages from them
somiaj 2017-01-27 07:51:45
RajRajRaj: mount the iso or directory with a loopback, and use apt-cdrom to scan for packages.
somiaj 2017-01-27 07:52:02
RajRajRaj: man apt-cdrom for more info
somiaj 2017-01-27 07:53:04
RajRajRaj: if you have a good network connection, you shoudln't need to install from the dvd images.
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:53:18
exactly my advice earlier. "most people install from the network"
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:53:29
and i had asked RajRajRaj if they had a good network and they said yes
tomcres 2017-01-27 07:53:56
also the DVD images are slightly out of date compared to the network. the network has updated packages.

RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:58:10
somiaj: how do i mount in loopback
somiaj 2017-01-27 07:58:31
RajRajRaj: the internet has all the packages (and all the security and bug fixes with them)
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:58:45
RajRajRaj: your assumption is wrong. "it has all packages at the time the DVD image was made" <- doesn't have all packages that you need, if security vulnerabilities have been fixed
somiaj 2017-01-27 07:58:49
RajRajRaj: if you have a good network connection, it is not worth trying to set your system up to install from the dvd images.
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:59:01
exactly
SynrG 2017-01-27 07:59:16
RajRajRaj: it's not a productive use of our time to pursue this any further.
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 07:59:45

I have 128GB ram... I notice only 5~6GB is being used.. can I tell linux to use as much is it needs in exchange of getting some performance ? is there some kernel tweaks or parameters I can play with in order to achieve this?
somiaj 2017-01-27 08:06:32
!free memory
dpkg 2017-01-27 08:06:33
Unlike information, your computer's memory does *not* want to be free. Free RAM is wasted RAM! Linux tries to use free physical memory for caching files from disk which speeds up disk access considerably. Linux releases RAM from these caches if programs need it. If you want to know how much physical memory the free(1) tool says you have left for program use, it's 'free' + 'buffers' + 'cache'. Also ask me about .
somiaj 2017-01-27 08:07:02
DeaDSouL: it should be doing that already, it could just be you aren't doing enough disk i/o that you are starting to use up cache, but over time the cache will use as much ram as there is avialable.
`Kevin 2017-01-27 08:07:48
^
somiaj 2017-01-27 08:07:49
DeaDSouL: if you are wanting to load a lot of stuff into memory at boot to increase performance that is another issue, and this may depend on what you want to load into boot, or maybe just run a live system an drun your os from memory.

somiaj 2017-01-27 08:10:46
DeaDSouL: I'm unsure on the details here, but this is a common thing windows does. During boot it will say load the webbrowser into memory, so when you open it, it pops up quickly (because it was already loaded in memory)
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:10:50
Is there a way like alt ctrl del key to get rid of this

SynrG 2017-01-27 08:11:00

DeaDSouL but i can't say much more about it.
somiaj 2017-01-27 08:11:14

SynrG 2017-01-27 08:11:20
RajRajRaj: generally it's not a good idea to reboot in the middle of an upgrade.

things could go very badly for you
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:11:32

somiaj 2017-01-27 08:11:52

RajRajRaj: if it was only just downloading when it hung, it should be safe to reboot

Hi, I prefer to use chromium over FF esr, its much faster. But I have a problem with both. Chromium crashes and I have to restart my whole system. FF loses internet connection and I have restart my router. Restarting router is definitely less annoying than restarting debian, but I wonder, what happens when I restart that refreshes chromium that if instead I can perform that action without restarting, then I am golden.

CrazyTux: there are some cavets, and one is you have to be able to install on the 3.16 kernel, and then upgrade to the newer kernel, so if the hardware cannot run/boot on 3.16 it becomes a far more difficult problem.
ompaul 2017-01-27 08:37:53
that is not good for it
CrazyTux 2017-01-27 08:38:02
ok. I have an Asus laptop. X540L model.

there is a new window system coming soon, forget what it is called, but I read something when I was reading about opengl, the windowing system used with it.
greycat 2017-01-27 08:38:22

somiaj 2017-01-27 08:38:30
CrazyTux: usually th einstall is okay, it is video and network drivers that tend to need the newer kernel/firmware
CrazyTux 2017-01-27 08:38:36
It has 4 gbs of RAM and runs on i3 2.0 Ghz cpu.
tp43_ 2017-01-27 08:38:37
greycat, sounds right, I think
greycat 2017-01-27 08:38:57
CrazyTux: video and wifi/ethernet chipsets are usually the tricky parts
CrazyTux 2017-01-27 08:39:08
ok
CrazyTux 2017-01-27 08:39:53
I have installed Debian stable on my old 32 bit laptop. I really liked the stability of Debian.

greycat 2017-01-27 08:42:43
fearnothing: so the question now is "where did this https_proxy variable come from, which I can see in my interactive ___ shell in a ___ terminal" ... well, there are a shitload of dot files that get read by the full suite of login/shell/display manager/desktop environment/... software.
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:43:11
Gosh
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:43:25

greycat 2017-01-27 08:43:33
Debian's version of bash *alone* reads /etc/profile /etc/bash.bashrc ~/.bash_profile ~/.bash_login ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc and that's just the BUILT IN files, not counting anything that those files choose to dot in.
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:43:53

greycat 2017-01-27 08:45:08
Wnoever put that in your /etc/bash.bashrc is a horrible sys admin and you should make sure they do not get the new root password after you change it and lock them out of sudoers.
