#debian channel featuring Henry151, dpkg, Josh_BoC, n4dir, Raineer, taq,

Henry151 2017-01-27 20:55:50
https://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap So I'm here looking at this and trying to gain a real understanding
Raineer 2017-01-27 20:57:53
Henry151 looks like witchcraft to me
Henry151 2017-01-27 20:58:25
so, if I'm running a linux system already, I can take this debootstrap and use it to create a debian system on an unused partition of my hard-drive?
n4dir 2017-01-27 20:58:33
Yes, Henry151
Henry151 2017-01-27 20:59:27
Where can I learn more about this and the live-build process? I'm looking at https://wiki.debian.org/DebianCustomCD and https://wiki.debian.org/Simple-CDD but neither seem like the right page
taq 2017-01-27 21:00:27
can someone help me with screen tearing on xfce
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:01:00
I want to configure a debian system in a partition on my present machine, as a sort of "trial-run," where I can make adjustments to what packages are included and configurations of things and whatever, and then I want to create an ISO that when installed comes out like that
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:01:19
any pointers in that general direction would be great
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:02:08
Henry151: i am not sure about the actual status of debian-live scripts. You might want to look at the tool refractasnapshot, not from debian.
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:02:15
I feel not very eloquent about it but I think that description of what I'm trying to do hopefully will help somebody to help me find resources like tutorials or walkthroughs or other docs
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:02:21
n4dir: thank you
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:02:31
I think i understand what you want.
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:02:32
refractasnapshot
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:02:47
Create an installation, configure it, test it, etc, then make a liveCD of it?
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:03:30
liveCD, or just installation cd even, it doesn't have to be able to be run live necessarily
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:03:32
also look at xnest or Xnest (i heard xephyr or Xephyr are better, but don't know). So you can also start the GUI interface
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:04:12
Henry151: iirc refractasnapshot will include a way to install (or perhaps refractainstaller is used instead of adding the debian-installer to the menu. If in doubt ask at their forum)
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:04:51
It might well be it is possible to create a liveCD with official Debian tools, but i think they don't work well (well: the ones i know)
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:05:55
Not sure, Henry151 i think this link is more clear than the one you posted: https://wiki.debian.org/chroot
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:06:46
or this one: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BasicChroot
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:07:41
Henry151: everything clear as mud?
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:07:46
thanks
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:08:09
I haven't read all yet but you've given me great leads to follow
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:08:12
many know about debootstrap/chroot. If you run in problems: just ask
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:08:27
!debootstrap
dpkg 2017-01-27 21:08:27
debootstrap can create a basic Debian system from scratch, without apt/dpkg. Useful for installing in a . It is key to installing Debian GNU/Linux from a Unix/Linux system, ask me about . http://wiki.debian.org/Debootstrap http://www.debian-administration.org/article/Installing_new_Debian_systems_with_debootstrap
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:08:32
!chroot
dpkg 2017-01-27 21:08:32
To chroot into your Debian system boot to your Debian install disk/live CD, switch to the other console (Alt-F2). Mount your root filesystem with "mount -t ext2 /dev/whatever /target" and make /dev, /proc and /sys usable with "mount --bind /dev /target/dev ; mount -t proc none /target/proc ; mount -t sysfs none /target/sys". You can then chroot into the system with "chroot /target".
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:08:44
^^ that is the quick way
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:11:18
I did this operation successfully http://docs.kali.org/development/live-build-a-custom-kali-iso but want to do it now with debian directly. I understand that it should be very similar, but I am also looking for a page like this one but for debian instead of kali
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:12:27
let me look at it
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:13:03
doesn't open here.
Henry151 2017-01-27 21:14:50
hm
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:14:53
does open. Looks like they do it with a script?
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:16:05
ah, yeah, and it seems with live-build.
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:17:45
Perhaps i recall wrong, but i think live-build removed the option to create a liveCD from the running system
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:18:11
if it works for kali, then it should still work. Duh.
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:19:18
Though: if you mount the free partition, use debootstrap to install debian to the mounted partition, do chroot and configure it
n4dir 2017-01-27 21:19:41
there really is no need to create a CD or iso. Just add it to grub and boot into it
Josh_BoC 2017-01-27 21:21:15
i recently changed the pw to my gmail account and now icedove can't connect to it anymore.
