AndreasLutro 2017-01-29 22:48:16
I'm a little confused about the security mirror. should it have higher apt priority than the standard mirror, or the same?
AndreasLutro 2017-01-29 22:49:08
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 has version 3.16.39-1 in the "standard" debian mirror, but 3.16.36-1+deb8u2 in security - my intuition says the former should be the one to install but then why is the security version there at all?
babilen 2017-01-29 22:52:11
judd: v linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64
judd 2017-01-29 22:52:12
Package: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 on amd64 -- jessie-updates: 3.16.7-ckt25-2; jessie-security: 3.16.36-1+deb8u2; jessie: 3.16.39-1
babilen 2017-01-29 22:52:32
AndreasLutro: It might have been upgraded during a point release
babilen 2017-01-29 22:53:01
(and the version in jessie-security wasn't removed)
noc_ 2017-01-29 22:59:02
Resilience, LD_PRELOAD=/path/to/lib.so mycommand could work, if the program is well written. In theory, the path could even be hard-coded in the binary, although generally this is avoided.
Resilience 2017-01-29 22:59:39
noc_, it is not hardcoded, that's why I was asking
muggles_ 2017-01-29 23:08:42
for some reason scp does not work for me, but ssh works fine
muggles_ 2017-01-29 23:08:52
i never had this issue before.
muggles_ 2017-01-29 23:09:00
scp works fine to other servers
muggles_ 2017-01-29 23:09:33
just gets stuck on debug2: exec request accepted on channel 0
muggles_ 2017-01-29 23:10:41
ugh nevermind, ugly bashrc
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:30:19
hi - can i run debian testing as a rolling distro?
GPenguin 2017-01-29 23:31:43
trotski2000: no, that would be Sid thebn
bolt 2017-01-29 23:32:05
trotski2000: what do you mean by that? you can bind to "testing" instead of "stretch", in which case you'd start getting new stuff when stretch is out
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:32:20
bolt: how can I do that?
bolt 2017-01-29 23:32:34
trotski2000: just edit your sources.list ?
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:32:44
that's what I would like to do - to follow testing, not to keep stretch when it is out
bolt 2017-01-29 23:33:04
trotski2000: why?
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:33:24
bolt: ok but what should I put in sources.list to keep following testing and not stick to stretch when it is out?
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:33:27
replace the word stretch in the sources.list with the word testing. Though imho testing or sid are not really rolling distros
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:33:48
bolt: to have newer packages and to have a rolling-like update process
bolt 2017-01-29 23:33:48
trotski2000: as i said, "you can bind to "testing" instead of "stretch", in which case you'd start getting new stuff when stretch is out"
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:33:51
during the freeze not much happens in them, and that is quite a long time
bolt 2017-01-29 23:34:05
trotski2000: you mean you want stuff to continously break at random times, when you need to get work done?
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:34:06
n4dir: how long is the freeze?
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:34:23
i would say round the lines of half a year, but the old saying is: when it's ready
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:34:41
I understand.
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:35:06
So the normal behaviour when installing testing is that it follows the next release, which is not "stretch", and when stretch its out it sticks with it - right?
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:35:14
*now
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:35:14
if you really want rolling all the time, you may be disappointed. I am not sure what rolling distros exist, but i think arch is said to be one
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:35:41
n4dir: what I would like to avoid is cumbersome updates. I don't like to have to reinstall the whole system
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:35:48
trotski2000: that really depends on what entries sources.list has
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:36:04
trotski2000: yeah, imho for that debian is very good.
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:36:34
as long i used debian i never reinstalled.
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:36:45
ca 8 years
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:37:32
n4dir: wow, that sounds good!
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:37:56
trotski2000, at the moment, stretch is testing. if you have "testing" as a keyword in your sources.list, you will keep following testing, whatever the codename of the future stable release is that testing prepares for
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:38:01
so the you just seamlessly upgrade from major release to major release? No need to backup user date, reinstall and re-configure?
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:38:02
once or twice i had to recover from backup, though
Pimmel 2017-01-29 23:38:20
wooo, n4dir is a hero ?? i can't belive it ,i reinstall every two weeks...
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:38:25
like said, trotski2000 i hadn't to
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:39:10
Pimmel: lol
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:39:23
trotski2000, yes… updates work pretty well, if you (mostly) only use packages from debian and don't mix in packages from ubuntu ppas, random repos of random projects that offer .deb files or somesuch (you should of course still have a backup)
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:39:25
trotski2000: if using testing or sid, make sure to install apt-listbugs and apt-listchanges (or similar) and consider a backup for the seldom case things go realy south
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:39:47
and what Iridos said
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:40:01
Iridos: ok, sounds good.
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:40:39
if you DO mix crappy packages in, you can end up in a world of pain where it's easier to just re-install (it's still possible to fix things, but it's a lot of work)
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:41:40
but I think I also … didn't do a fresh install from 2001 to 2012 or so?
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:42:06
cloning the existing system just seemed easier
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:42:38
oh, and don't mix in packages from testing into stable, that also doesn't work
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:42:39
lol, yeah, that too
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:42:56
(for the most part)
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:43:07
(just rsync an existing installation to a different PC/laptop/etc)
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:43:34
mixing testing and sid is a different thing. Some recommend it highly, some get foam at mouth if it is mentioned
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:43:49
even the channel bot offers different opinions on the question ... lol
trotski2000 2017-01-29 23:44:22
n4dir: but I've read that testing is very stable and that stuff mostly never breaks, right?
Iridos 2017-01-29 23:45:04
well… it's ok for testing/unstable to break… and fixes only go into unstable first… so if you can't wait for an important fix, you must mix testing and unstable…
n4dir 2017-01-29 23:45:05
as far it's me: yes. But i got a) comfortable hardware and b) don't rely on certain apps (mainly DE's ) to work all the time
