i'm trying to install/use zfs-dkms and am running into a problem loading the module after the package is installed. As far as I can tell it builds, but won't load. It seems like kernel version matches up with headers. https://gist.github.com/bryanalves/cb0b4bd218681ab37b96f2edc77a252e
fryguy 2017-01-27 19:04:35
what else could be wrong?
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:22:00
hi.. i downloaded a netinst .iso pointed to from main page of debian.org, and wrote/booted it to usb.. but when it comes up it says "no kernel modules were found. this is probably due to a mismatch<...>" any idea?
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:22:33
how did you create your bootable medium (I'm thinking usb)
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:23:26
yes usb.. some 'rufus' windows utility
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:23:33
that is most lkely the issue
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:23:35
!rufus
dpkg 2017-01-27 19:23:35
rufus is a tool that can be used to make bootable USB devices under Windows. It is not recommended for use with Debian CD/DVD images, as it mangles the installer in cruel and unusual ways, resulting in hard to debug problems. Ask me about , , .
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:23:41
!win32diskimager
dpkg 2017-01-27 19:23:41
win32diskimager is much more reliable than for copying ISO images to USB sticks and you can download it from http://sf.net/projects/win32diskimager/ . Adjust the file mask from *.img to *.* if it doesn't show Debian .iso images. See and for further details.
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:23:44
use that on windows.
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:23:48
thank you.

Unetbootin is good for linu
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:24:40
!unetbootin
dpkg 2017-01-27 19:24:41
UNetbootin (Universal Netboot Installer) allows creation of bootable USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions. http://unetbootin.sf.net/ Not recommended for use with Debian CD/DVD images, as it mangles the installer in cruel and unusual ways, resulting in hard to debug problems. Ask me about , , .
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:25:04
again no, debian iso images are bootable images, using something that makes them bootable causes problems, you need a pure image writter.
J1sy 2017-01-27 19:26:26
Lilo
J1sy 2017-01-27 19:26:37
Lilo?
awal1 2017-01-27 19:27:01
lilo?
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:27:17
the original linux boot loader, you can still use it in debian if you want.
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:27:44
but most use grub these days, though with efi, no need for such a complicated bootloader, gumiboot is another alternative for efi
awal1 2017-01-27 19:28:38
i know whats lilo. but why he is talking about lilo right now? :P
awal1 2017-01-27 19:30:11
what is ^
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:34:15
eugh.. netinst is failing at detect and mount cd-rom step? i'm not using cdrom media?
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:35:00
brett\: this time you used win32diskimager to put the iso on the usb drive?
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:35:08
yes
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:35:35
and you put it on the drive (not a partition on the drive?) anyways I have never used win32diskimager, so unsure on the details with it
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:35:50
i will try writing it again to be sure
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:36:08
it was presented to me as a drive letter (F: iirc) which matches what the failed 'rufus' write showed in 'my computer'
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:37:29
do you have wifi that may need non-free firwmare you want to use on your install?
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:39:25
somiaj that's possible, i'm booting from a laptop w/o ethernet. i didn't see any alternate/manual wifi mentions at all yet though
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:39:59
!firmware image
dpkg 2017-01-27 19:39:59
Unofficial images - containing non-free Debian packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also .
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:40:13
you want to use that netinstall image, most likely needed for wifi support
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:40:29
thx again
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:41:18
just a suggestion if maybe something is wrong with the image you have, though the errors you get are classis errors for using rufus/unetbootin, you shouldn't get these with win32diskimager
brett\ 2017-01-27 19:43:05
even this cdrom/wifi firmware problem should be okay using win32diskimager?
somiaj 2017-01-27 19:43:28
yea, that is what you want to use. I'm unsure why it didn't work for you
