budder 2017-01-29 16:48:34
GTX 750 Ti
tomcres 2017-01-29 16:49:41
budder, ah. OK. that explains it. You haven't installed nvidia-driver yet, have you?
budder 2017-01-29 16:50:04
tomcres: i haven't installed anything, no
missmbob 2017-01-29 16:50:18
!nvidia
dpkg 2017-01-29 16:50:18
Where possible, Nvidia graphic processing units are supported using the open source driver on Debian systems by default. To install the proprietary "nvidia" driver, see https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers or ask me about , ; installing this directly from nvidia.com (i.e. with ) is _not_ supported in #debian, please go to #nvidia on irc.freenode.net.
missmbob 2017-01-29 16:50:36
go to that wiki
budder 2017-01-29 17:01:23
still need help
klys 2017-01-29 17:02:20
budder, apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms? edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf?
missmbob 2017-01-29 17:04:48
pay attention. a little typo and you're screwed. copy/paste everything if you want help
missmbob 2017-01-29 17:04:58
paste.debian.net
budder 2017-01-29 17:06:32
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
budder 2017-01-29 17:06:44

missmbob 2017-01-29 17:07:07
not even close. read the wiki more clearly
budder 2017-01-29 17:07:12
i'm looking here https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#jessie
budder 2017-01-29 17:09:56
okay i give up, i don't know what to do
budder 2017-01-29 17:10:17
it says "Add "contrib" and "non-free" components to /etc/apt/sources.list, for example:
budder 2017-01-29 17:10:18
"
budder 2017-01-29 17:10:29
# Debian 8 "Jessie"
budder 2017-01-29 17:10:29
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ jessie main contrib non-free
budder 2017-01-29 17:10:43
for step 1. but I input that in the terminal and nothing happens
klys 2017-01-29 17:10:50
so take a text editor and add the line to the file
fryguy 2017-01-29 17:10:59
I have a service that I manually added to /etc/init.d on an old machine, I"m trying to recreate it now and `/etc/init.d/servicename start` isn't working because it's unable to find the systemd unit for it. How can I generate the shim so that the init.d script will start/stop it without requiring a systemd unit?
budder 2017-01-29 17:11:44
klys i'm not sure how to do that
klys 2017-01-29 17:12:53
budder, apt-get install joe; joe /etc/apt/sources.list; #paste and ctrl-k ctrl-x; apt-get update; apt-get -f install; apt-get install nvidia-kernel-dkms
budder 2017-01-29 17:18:09
still lost. I found /etc/apt/sources.list but it won't let me edit
RickHull 2017-01-29 17:18:37
there is a program called `sudo` which will give you temporary privileges
RickHull 2017-01-29 17:18:49
you will need to enter your user's password
RickHull 2017-01-29 17:19:04
if you do: sudo -s
RickHull 2017-01-29 17:19:21
then you will have a session as root, the admin user
RickHull 2017-01-29 17:19:33
you can then edit the system files like /etc/apt/sources.list
budder 2017-01-29 17:20:55
RickHull: command not found
budder 2017-01-29 17:24:53
okay can someone at least tell me where else i can find help
awal1 2017-01-29 17:29:52
budder, run su and type your root password (you dont see it when you type it, but fine)
budder 2017-01-29 17:32:49
sudo: command not found
awal1 2017-01-29 17:32:58
forget sudo
fryguy 2017-01-29 17:33:00
su, not sudo
awal1 2017-01-29 17:33:11
su and give your root passwrd
awal1 2017-01-29 17:35:04

budder 2017-01-29 17:36:20

budder 2017-01-29 17:37:25

awal1 2017-01-29 17:37:48

awal1 2017-01-29 17:38:00

awal1 2017-01-29 17:38:20

awal1 2017-01-29 17:39:17

budder 2017-01-29 17:44:56
