abrotman 2017-01-28 01:47:13
fluffyship: different kernel, different drivers, all sorts of resaons
fluffyship 2017-01-28 01:47:23
abrotman, ok, thanks
abrotman 2017-01-28 01:47:26
tp43_: have you actually looked to see if it was dead after killing?
fluffyship 2017-01-28 01:48:16
abrotman, just a think, seems like the wifi doesn't see any network, and it is a +non-free, any chance that I can find the drivers elsewhere?
fluffyship 2017-01-28 01:48:33
or anyway, what can I do? ?D
abrotman 2017-01-28 01:48:45
fluffyship: what driver is it? is the firmware installed?
fluffyship 2017-01-28 01:48:56
tp43_, doing a killall -9 did not stop it neither?
rgammans 2017-01-28 01:49:34
abortman : no luck , I think it been removed . I'll try bugs
fluffyship 2017-01-28 01:49:36
abrotman, Just a minute, I have to check what wifi it has, drivers and all :)
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:52:22
abrotman, yes, if I call it once, you will still see there is a process. When it is running, all things fine, I see mutliple chromium in ps -e, maybe one for each tab.
abrotman 2017-01-28 01:52:40
tp43_: sounds like it's not really dead?
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:52:49
fluffyship, maybe, never tried, killing it is not the problem I don't think
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:53:09
abrotman, so killing it is the problem? Cause calling $killall chromium twice does kill it
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:53:18
abrotman, it is restarting it that is the problem
abrotman 2017-01-28 01:53:22
tp43_: I mean, maybe you sohuld figure out why it's locking up ...
abrotman 2017-01-28 01:53:29
I'd try a new profile, update flash
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:53:42
I update my whole system
tp43_ 2017-01-28 01:53:53
abrotman, what do you mean by new profile
rgammans 2017-01-28 01:59:43
If anyone else needs this the ext2prepare binary was removed. See bugs #400797, and formal removal #553894
judd 2017-01-28 01:59:44
Bug http://bugs.debian.org/400797 in ext2resize (closed): «ext2resize obsole. resize2fs from e2fsprogs is a recent version of this utility»; severity: grave; opened: 2006-11-28; last modified: 2010-01-25.
rgammans 2017-01-28 02:00:55
judd: snap = yeah looks like it won't have worked for me any; I 'll have to backup and reformat. The partition in question isn't huge by modern standards anyway
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:05:17
Hi. Want to modify the lowest level keyboard mapping so i can have cap-lock swapped w control in the virtual consoles
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:05:47
anyone know where that file is? i can't seem to find it via man this morning
jim 2017-01-28 02:06:02
hi... trying to get libssl sources, and I get this error back: E: Failed to fetch http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/openssl/openssl_1.1.0d.orig.tar.gz.asc 403 Forbidden file type or location: http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/openssl/openssl_1.1.0d.orig.tar.gz.asc
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:06:53
jim: 403 - usually means there is a network hiccup, or the server is down?
jim 2017-01-28 02:07:19
tried a couple different mirrors, and it downloaded other files
jim 2017-01-28 02:07:33
(in both cases)
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:07:40
well rats.
jim 2017-01-28 02:08:00
yeah, thanks for responding
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:09:33
can you ping that server?
themill 2017-01-28 02:10:02
ftp.us.d.o is rarely a good choice given the way it works
themill 2017-01-28 02:10:33
(there is not a "that server" but a dns round robin meaning that it's stupidly hard to debug any problem you find)
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:10:51
go to http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/openssl/
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:10:58
*GOT to
realies 2017-01-28 02:12:15
how much is the performance impact when using lvm + encryption on an ssd?
realies 2017-01-28 02:12:26
also does it mean that you need to type in a password on each power cycle?
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:14:10
iirc except for a small amount of startup cost LVM has no real impact on performance (omce mapping is done, it's static. )
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:14:19
thats all I got
realies 2017-01-28 02:15:44
what about passwords on each power cycle?
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:15:53
dunno
themill 2017-01-28 02:16:27
a decryption key has to come from somewhere
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:16:51
I hear Putin will happily supply you with one...
realies 2017-01-28 02:17:04
xD
sonOfRa 2017-01-28 02:17:30
realies: you can also use some other key material, like a USB stick you plug in. However, I wouldn't advise to carry around a USB stick with unprotected key material.
realies 2017-01-28 02:17:30
ok, rebooting the install...
sonOfRa 2017-01-28 02:17:51
So yes, password on power cycle in SOME form is inevitable
realies 2017-01-28 02:18:25
thanks
realies 2017-01-28 02:18:55
do I need LVM or not at all?
realies 2017-01-28 02:19:08
i can use guided (entire disk) or lvm (entire disk)
sonOfRa 2017-01-28 02:19:39
LVM allows you to resize your partitions even in the running system later on
realies 2017-01-28 02:20:06
sounds useful, any overhead?
sonOfRa 2017-01-28 02:20:15
marginal
sonOfRa 2017-01-28 02:20:23
In other words: None that you'll notice
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:20:59
there are tools that allow you to resize existing partitions, but you have to unmount those file systems while they work.
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:21:42
thechief benefit of LVM is to have a filesystem that goes over the physical disk boundaries. eg - N disks, == 1 filesystem.
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:23:31
given the huge size of disks today (just spent $80 on 2 TB ), LVM is rarely needed for a personal machine. For specific technical applications (DNA, proteins, movie editing) multi-v olume filesystemsare an absolute must
NiLon 2017-01-28 02:25:53
80 MB :o that has been massive
themill 2017-01-28 02:26:58
lvm makes sense on personal machines as a route to encrypting the disk easily -- lvm inside luks
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:28:00
Is that a lot different from just ancrypting a partition?
themill 2017-01-28 02:28:26
If you've got more than one partition, yes
raidghost 2017-01-28 02:29:22
Why does debian output partman-lvm incorrect metadata area header checksum on /dev/sda1 at offset 4096 ?
raidghost 2017-01-28 02:29:28
All i want is to setup lvm
epsilon 2017-01-28 02:29:28
without lvm you have to enter passphrase for every single partition
CuSn 2017-01-28 02:29:44
epsilon: ah.
petn-randall 2017-01-28 02:30:57
hi raidghost, what are you doing exactly, what do you expect, what do you get instead?
minionsfanboy 2017-01-28 02:36:41
i have debian 8.0.0 cd do i need to download the latest or can i do a installation with 8.0.0 ?
themill 2017-01-28 02:37:44
You can just use that CD and then install the security updates after
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:38:25
and apt-get update && apt-get upgrade should be enought
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:38:30
an*
minionsfanboy 2017-01-28 02:38:53
thank you, because i though i have a very old version after the installation
minionsfanboy 2017-01-28 02:38:57
cool that i can still use that
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:39:26
minionsfanboy, you will end up with the last Jessie version, 8.7, i think.
minionsfanboy 2017-01-28 02:39:40
cool thank you
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:39:48
np :)
unborn 2017-01-28 02:41:21
does anyone know how to create .bin from hdd?
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:42:21
unborn, cat /dev/hdd > hdd.bin
unborn 2017-01-28 02:42:49
Brigo: oh is that simple like this? - thank you!
Brigo 2017-01-28 02:43:27
unborn, you can also use dd if=/dev/hdd of=hdd.iso, check google for more hints/ways.
