zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:45:19
CodeMachine: still "non free garbage" <- in my opinion! but that's a TOTALLY different issue. i'm a BIG fsf supporter, running libreboot on all my systems.
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:46:10
as far pidgin is concerned:
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:46:14
CH_ROOT# grep non-free /etc/apt/sources.list
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:46:14
CH_ROOT# apt-cache show pidgin
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:46:14
Package: pidgin
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:46:19
...
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:46:59
So to make this easy for me, I should just clean up my sources.list (remove non free) and remove all nonfree and download thoose I can download again?
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:47:16
n4dir: ahhh, pidgin is in main (ie it's free software)....
awal1 2017-01-28 08:47:22
but for general learning I still curious about the aptitude equivalent of apt-/apt-get option pkgname* . why aptitude doesn't interpret * as apt?
liske1 2017-01-28 08:47:34
exit
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:47:34
zykotick9: but stil non free according to mrms.
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:47:51
CodeMachine: DON'T install software from outside of debian.
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:47:56
!dontbreakdebian
dpkg 2017-01-28 08:47:56
dont break debian is, like, https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:48:45
CodeMachine: to use contrib & non-free is a decision YOU need to make. but don't install the driver from nvidia.com whatever you do!
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:48:49
Yes I don't, but didn't know "nonfree" is breaking it
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:49:00
I did not!
njimiuo 2017-01-28 08:49:13
does anyone have some insight in my issue?
dontknow 2017-01-28 08:49:41
CodeMachine, you want security? what is your cpu
njimiuo 2017-01-28 08:50:26
dontknow: security in an age where uefi bios starts networking . . .
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:51:09
it's intel i5
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:51:17
njimiuo: maybe for you (and many others), but not for everyone....
dontknow 2017-01-28 08:51:54
CodeMachine, have fun with intel management engine blob
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:52:38
Lucky I have a motherboard and CPU with amd next to me ;)
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:53:11
I guess it's also like a bottle of win, the older it is the better.
likcoras 2017-01-28 08:54:39
Is there a preferred/recommended way to do stable->testing upgrade between apt and aptitude?
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:54:51
CodeMachine: not any amd post 2013 is basically in the same boat as intelme :( https://libreboot.org/faq/#amd
likcoras 2017-01-28 08:55:08
I saw apt-get, but just want to confirm.
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:55:28
!jessie->stretch
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:55:59
likcoras: do "/msg dpkg jessie->stretch" and follow-read the instructions
likcoras 2017-01-28 08:56:08
did, so apt-get, then?
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:56:19
zykotick9: More reading. Think I have like a couple of books infront of me now xD Thanks I'll read threw this once I'm done with my closest mission.
likcoras 2017-01-28 08:56:32
Thanks!
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:56:37
CodeMachine: i installed pidgin and vrms, ran vrms and it doesn't list pidgin
dontknow 2017-01-28 08:56:43
CodeMachine, if you are not interested in core meaning of free software, then you are fine with a couple of nonfree software
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:57:01
n4dir: pidgin is in main!
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:57:24
zykotick9: i know that pidgin is in main
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:57:41
n4dir: sorry, it's not pidgin it's pidgin-skype
njimiuo 2017-01-28 08:57:43
I have a device that reads bootcode from the sd slot, but the sd in it is very small, however, it has 4 usb slots (large usb devices) ; how can I let it boot from sd and let the usb take over (thus using the usb to store packages, home folders, etc)
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:58:57
CodeMachine: ah. ok.
zykotick9 2017-01-28 08:58:59
n4dir: i couldn't understand why you where looking for pidgin in vrms, vrms only lists contrib/non-free.... but CodeMachine just filled in hte missing piece ;) sorry.
somiaj 2017-01-28 08:59:44
zykotick9: my thought was more if someone wanted to remove contrib/non-free...but yes, it is not the most efficent.
CodeMachine 2017-01-28 08:59:46
anyway, my head is overloaded atm. Gotta talk a walk and buy some coffe. Thanks for the fine information.
n4dir 2017-01-28 08:59:54
mainly to waste a bit of time ... Gotta say that from the top of my head i don't know much software which is in non-free (besides graphics and wireless)
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:00:18
CodeMachine: due to the nature of non-free they may not be as secure and sometimes you are left up to waiting for the vendor to provide a fix, though debian will provided fixes if they are avaialble.
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:00:57
CodeMachine: note Virtualbox is in contrib, not non-free. In this case the bios requires non-free software to compile, the rest is free.
dontknow 2017-01-28 09:03:57
qemu is great. i made a shortcut and assigned an icon. when i double click on it VM opens
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:05:49
Hey... I wanted to load linux on an ultrabook I have, I was hoping someone could tell me of the advantages of using debian versus ubuntu?
n4dir 2017-01-28 09:06:21
!why debian
dpkg 2017-01-28 09:06:30
Debian strives to maintain your freedom whilst also paying close attention to the technical aspects of making a great OS. Debian is stable, upgradable and well tested. See also http://www.debian.org/intro/free http://www.debian.org/intro/why_debian http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/talks/why_debian/ http://www.aboutdebian.com/ . As an added bonus, you get to ask questions in #debian.
n4dir 2017-01-28 09:07:18
does that help?
dontknow 2017-01-28 09:07:42
Mitchell92, for example, on debian you get vlc security updates. but on ubuntu you don't get it
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:07:51
ahh I see
n4dir 2017-01-28 09:08:18
Mitchell92: you are already comfortable with ubuntu?
zykotick9 2017-01-28 09:08:40
somiaj: have you seen the Virtualbox instructions for stretch? https://wiki.debian.org/VirtualBox :| not even in debian
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:08:41
I do hobbyist programming, web design, graphic design, some scripting... I usually have 3 machines, laptops, that I just switch between based on my task. I enjoy my MacBook for casual use and typing my papers for class, MSI notebook for games, and ultrabooks I usually have run linux on just for casual lounging around.
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:08:46
I am...
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:08:51
I started with Linux back with Redhat...
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:09:08
and then moved over to suse, then ubuntu and mint...
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:09:46
I have debian running on my web server, although in all honestly its something i just set up and left. I enjoy the package manager and how I can update the system easily without having to spend lots of time to maintain it
n4dir 2017-01-28 09:10:17
Ah. Well: else i would have said sticking to what one knows isn't always a bad option.
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:10:32
I'm looking for good performance.
n4dir 2017-01-28 09:10:50
Imho debian is good when it comes to performance
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:10:52
It's a machine I got in May for a good price on amazon, around $500... hp pavilion x360, SSD, dual core 6th gen i5, and 8GB of RAM.
TomTomTo1 2017-01-28 09:10:53
you will not see much difference.
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:11:19
Yeah. How is it with touch screen input on gnome 3? I am hoping to use it in the tablet mode and just use it on the couch to do my reading for electronic textbooks for class.

dontknow 2017-01-28 09:15:58
Mitchell92, debian stable is very stable but boring
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:16:23
yeah, I heard it isn't that cutting edge. I like Fedora but I don't like the lengthy setup process considering its a hassle to do a distro upgrade
Mitchell92 2017-01-28 09:16:27
while debian is more so rolling
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:24:58
zykotick9: I belive it will be provided via stretch-backports. Oracale corprate policy won't let the vbox team (even though the vbox team would have) backport fixes to older versions, so fixes have to come from newer versions.
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:25:25
dontknow: I like using libvirt (virsh or virtmanager) as a frontend to qemu-kvm
zykotick9 2017-01-28 09:26:04
somiaj: why does that remind me so much of firefox? ;) thanks for the info.
dontknow 2017-01-28 09:27:14
somiaj, i tried libvirt i guess. i couldn't make it work lol
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:27:55
dontknow: I like virsh, seems to work well to manage multiple vms. virtmanager is a gui for this I don't use but many like.
TomTomTo1 2017-01-28 09:28:54
how is operator precedence handled in aptitude's short form of the search syntax? for example aptitude search '~S~i~scontrib|~snon-free' could either mean '~S~i(~scontrib|~snon-free)' or '(~S~i~scontrib)|~snon-free' what are the rules that make it choose the latter? i can't find it in the documentation.
somiaj 2017-01-28 09:30:14
unsure if it is written down, but many times order of operations are read left to right when no statement of order is made.
TomTomTo1 2017-01-28 09:30:39
yeah, that might be it.
it0 2017-01-28 09:31:53
Hi everyone, hope you're all doing fine
vinalencc 2017-01-28 09:33:06

it0 2017-01-28 09:33:28
I'm fine too :D
vinalencc 2017-01-28 09:35:13

RickHull 2017-01-28 09:40:40
Hi, was there an older / different version of crontab that allowed some small random factor in scheduling? I can't find it in `man 5 crontab`
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:41:12
like a little salt, or a wide tolerance, to avoid a potential thundering herd
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:41:38
maybe an ubuntu thing?
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:44:00
also, why does the default for sysstat get specified as 5-55/10 rather than */10 ?
RickHull 2017-01-28 09:44:39
oh, nevermind -- it runs on the 5s I guess
