fearnothing 2017-01-27 08:45:56
well, that would make life difficult for me
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:45:59
40 min
fearnothing 2017-01-27 08:46:01
in my defence, this is my home lab
fearnothing 2017-01-27 08:46:11
can you say what the appropriate place is?
zykotick9 2017-01-27 08:46:18
hehe
jelly 2017-01-27 08:46:22
RajRajRaj: it does give a proper message, in stretch. The "apt" command is new in jessie and still in flux.
greycat 2017-01-27 08:46:36
Your personal ~/.profile or whatever your login reads, if you think you really need to do such a thing to your account.
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 08:46:38
Ok
greycat 2017-01-27 08:48:20
If you log in through a display manager instead of a shell, read https://wiki.debian.org/EnvironmentVariables and/or https://wiki.debian.org/Xsession
fearnothing 2017-01-27 08:48:59
no, all ssh
greycat 2017-01-27 08:49:30
Then it's easy. Use ~/.profile or ~/.bash_profile
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:05:37
is this true? "using swap with SSDs can cause issues with hardware degradation over time." from https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-swap-on-centos-6
jelly 2017-01-27 09:06:35
DeaDSouL: it can be. If your workload needs more RAM, buy more RAM.
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:07:34
jelly: it's better to disable swap on SSD..
jelly 2017-01-27 09:07:53
DeaDSouL: no, it's better to buy more RAM
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:08:31
jelly: say I get more ram. should I let the swap enabled or disable it
jelly 2017-01-27 09:08:34
if you're not swapping _all the time_ then you won't exceeds your SSD's daily and total writes
jelly 2017-01-27 09:08:57
so you will be able to enjoy occasional swapping without killing your ssd
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:09:05
Hey, can you help me? I had a primary partition where i had win10, but since win10 sux i wanted to install win7. I've specified to install win7 on my win10 partition, but now my extended partition with debian is shown as unallocated, except swap (basically all partition with ext4 are shown as unallocated). Then I ran testdisk, but partitions are
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:09:05
contrassigned with "D". The only thing i've done was formatting swap to ext4. Is there a way to recover my ext4 partition with debian?
Wizard 2017-01-27 09:09:53
xfce++
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:12:52
jelly: does this apply to NVMe too?
Nematocyst 2017-01-27 09:13:43
frNCs_Rf, i don't know how to solve the problem. but my recommendation is to back up what you have now. it would really suck if it's recoverable, but trying some intermediate measure messes it up further. hopefully it's just the partition table.
jelly 2017-01-27 09:14:20
DeaDSouL: don't see why it wouldn't
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:17:06
jelly: i get the feeling that nothing like the mechanical drives :P .. the only issue it has.. it's slow
DeaDSouL 2017-01-27 09:18:56
aw, thanks
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:19:19
Nematocyst: the probolem is that there are some files marked in red which means they are unrecoverable. I hope formatting swap to ext4 didn't do the trick. I can reinstall it but inside there were lots of files like 4 android roma sources plus lots of packages regarding developement, photos, various files... If the home dir was at least ok, i would reinstall
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:19:19
the system wothout problems
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:19:52
And windows really sux, that's not fair from microsoft side
jelly 2017-01-27 09:20:55
frNCs_Rf: go talk to a professional data recovery company if you have the only copy of valuable data there, but first create an image of the whole disk on a second device
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:21:21
Wut?
jelly 2017-01-27 09:23:00
if your files are worth a lot of money, don't try to fix things yourself as it's possible to make things even worse
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:23:35
It isn't for money, it is for time
jelly 2017-01-27 09:23:35
and make a backup of the whole disk before doing _any_ recovery or writes
jelly 2017-01-27 09:23:41
time is money.
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:23:47
Sure :D
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:25:30
I was just looking for a way to recover my files, and when there is a source tree like android one, we can't look in any file and see if it is damaged. Just want to see if it is the partition table corrupted or if it has deleted the whole partitions
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:26:55
can you hard write protect the disc ?
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:27:11
Wat?
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:27:23
Why protectef?
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:28:28
Yes there is a hdd password set on bios for it before boot, if you meant that
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:28:44
good enough start
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:29:13
you can boot with a live cd rom and inspect the disc
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:29:30
Yes tried with testdisk
sorge 2017-01-27 09:29:31
ker
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:30:33
It shows D (deleted) but there are some files but others are marked as red
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:31:15
so you are looking for a more sofisticated recovery tool ?
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:31:47
sophisticated :D
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:32:41
Hmm maybe
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:32:53
If it is a bug
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:33:09
It should be recoverable
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:33:37
I've only formatted swap as ext4 after the "destruction"
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:35:44
what was "the destruction" ?
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:35:59
Should i restart after installing nvidia drivers
choice 2017-01-27 09:36:31
Is it possible to configure wireshark to capture only the IP addresses my computer sends data to? All I want is a list IP adresses.
somiaj 2017-01-27 09:36:37
RajRajRaj: that is the easist approach, and you have to if the nouveau kms module is loaded.
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:36:48
wingnut: installing win which caused this problem
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:37:44
choice: yeah it is
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:37:47
Thanks :)
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:37:51
somiaj:
choice 2017-01-27 09:38:27
RajRajRaj: How?
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:38:53
choice: sorry wrong user
RajRajRaj 2017-01-27 09:39:03
I was talking to somiaj
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:40:12
frNCs_Rf: win ? wt* is that ?
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:40:58
Win = windows which in my case is 7
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:41:26
i see
wingnut 2017-01-27 09:42:15
am i on the wrong channel ? this is debian ?
somiaj 2017-01-27 09:43:32
yes this is #debian, a support channel for unversial operating system.
frNCs_Rf 2017-01-27 09:43:33
It damaged debian ext4 partition and i'm running testdisk which is in debiam
somiaj 2017-01-27 09:43:56
testdisk? have you tried to fsck the filesystem form a live/recvoery image
