My dead keys (accents) stop working after I suspend my computer. Any idea what it could be?
awal1 2017-01-27 14:54:13
dD_, your keymap gets changed after resume?
dD_ 2017-01-27 14:55:45
awal1, after resume, the keymap is the same, but the dead keys won't be dead keys (typing an accent will show the accent directly)
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:18:25
Hello. Do I really need Firefox-ESR and Iceweasel->Firefox ESR if I have Firefox?
awal1 2017-01-27 15:19:56
you know what is firefox-esr vs firefox?
awal1 2017-01-27 15:20:11

joze 2017-01-27 15:20:30
I wondered that I saw iceweasel upgrading last time
joze 2017-01-27 15:20:42
I thought it was replaced
awal1 2017-01-27 15:21:15
iceweasel was the debian name for mozilla firefox-esr
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:21:56
I have Firefox v 51.0.0~bpo80+1, Firefox-ESR v 45.7.0~deb8u1, and Iceweasel v 45.7.0~deb8u1
awal1 2017-01-27 15:22:50
firefox is standard firefox, iceweasel and firefox-esr = firefox-esr
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:22:54
I am using Firefox v 51.0.1~bpo80+1 (not 51.0.0)
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:23:20
Do you think it is safe to remove iceweasel and firefox-esr?
awal1 2017-01-27 15:23:40
I doubt you can have firefox and firefox-esr running at same time
Heston 2017-01-27 15:23:46
removing iceweasel wont do anything but remove the link
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:24:07
I don't use them at the same time. The joy of tabs and all.
Heston 2017-01-27 15:24:12
it just points to firefox-esr like awal1 said
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:24:28
So, removing Iceweasel is cosmetic them.
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-27 15:24:29
GNUs
awal1 2017-01-27 15:24:44
Heston, not if you install 'firefox'
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-27 15:24:59
awal1, its a troll
awal1 2017-01-27 15:25:00
you have to install firefox-esr if you want -esr
AlexLikeRock 2017-01-27 15:25:06
they dont now toting
joze 2017-01-27 15:25:19
that iceweasel upgrade beneath firefox-esr was just a symbolic link then?
Heston 2017-01-27 15:25:40
awal1, we've already established that she has esr installed
awal1 2017-01-27 15:26:21
Heston, yeah. she can just run apt remove iceweasel firefox; firefox-esr should be kept there
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:26:29
Ouch, it looks like removing iceweasel also removes 10 or more other things too.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:26:36
I don't understand well the symbolic links
Heston 2017-01-27 15:26:52
it shouldnt have uninstalled anything else
themill 2017-01-27 15:27:04
There will be dependencies on iceweasel
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:27:17
Heston, I didn't run the uninstall yet.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:27:20
themill, may be more aware about all that :P
themill 2017-01-27 15:28:09
Lady_Aleena: the better question is, perhaps, why do you want to remove the iceweasel package. Reading its description might be worthwhile.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:28:19
Removing iceweasel also removes firebird2.5-common firebird2.5-common-doc firebird2.5-server-common libcmis-0.4-4 libfbclient2 libfbembed2.5 libgltf-0.0-0 liborcus-0.8-0 libreoffice-sdbc-firebird libwps-0.3-3
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:29:17
themill, trying to clean up my system. Now that I have Firefox, I don't need Iceweasel which has caused problems with some sites which don't recognize it as a valid browser.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:29:22
Lady_Aleena: I understand what you asked but I'm lost with the symbolic links. The radical way is: apt-get purge iceweasel firefox firefox-esr. then apt-get update && apt-get install firefox-esr. you will be out of doubts
themill 2017-01-27 15:29:40
Lady_Aleena: you do not have iceweasel at all....
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:29:47
awali, I don't think I need the -esr version either.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:29:59
awali, I use the backported version.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:30:04
install firefox if you want mozilla standard release, install firefox-esr if you want ESr branch (default in debian)
awal1 2017-01-27 15:30:37
themill by uninstalling iceweasel I mean the symbolic stuff will be gone
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:30:37
awali, I am doing clean up, meaning I have all these Firefoxes installed and I am thinking of removing the ones which I don't use.
themill 2017-01-27 15:31:15
Lady_Aleena: you do not have iceweasel at all.... there is nothing to uninstall
themill 2017-01-27 15:31:32
awal1: removing a symlink is hardly worth uninstalling other packages for.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:31:40
themill, then why is it listed everywhere under internet programs?
themill 2017-01-27 15:32:28
Lady_Aleena: because breaking the existing menu entries for people was deemed to be unacceptable.
themill 2017-01-27 15:32:43
You'll find that they run firefox not iceweasel...
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:32:47
So if I remove Firefox-ESR, I get rid of the Iceweasel entries too, right?
themill 2017-01-27 15:33:15
It's highly unlikely you can do so without removing other packages
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:34:03
I wish I knew what these other packages did.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:34:22
And what other programs are dependent on them, if any.
themill 2017-01-27 15:34:34
why? what's the problem with ignoring it and moving on?
themill 2017-01-27 15:34:56
You're currently creating problems by looking for problems that don't exist.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:34:59
themill, my brain is wired weird, I can't ignore the mess all these made.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:35:55
apt-cache depends pkgname / rdepends pkgname
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:36:06
I'm the person who has to hang her bath towel in a certain way after use to hide the tag.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:36:43
I put pillowcases on pillows so the pillow tags are hidden away.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:37:20
So, when I see a mess on my system, I want to clean it up by getting rid of programs which appear to be clutter.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:38:55
So, in short, I am weird.
themill 2017-01-27 15:40:13
I'd expect you can hide the Iceweasel menu entry in whatever is displaying your menu.
awal1 2017-01-27 15:40:29
Lady_Aleena: I reinstalled jessie after all that re-naming (iceweasel/firefox) and installed newly firefox-esr,so I can't reproduce. But, even maybe a stupid thing, I'm curios about what "dpkg -L iceweasel" says ?
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:40:49
Hold on, I'm getting a bit of a chill so going to get slippers and a robe.
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:43:23
Darn it Debian pastebin! What do you have against my underscore?!
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:44:01
awal1, paste.debian.net/911036/ is the result of dpkg -L iceweasel
awal1 2017-01-27 15:44:39
hm
Lady_Aleena 2017-01-27 15:45:02
awal1, what?
