Don't run X as root. Don't start X by running "X". Start it by running "startx". But not as root.

Hi. I have a fresh debian jessie install. Im browsing the web and several times now, my mouse freezes. Can still type though. I have to restart and then it works again. Its plugged into usb port.

A strange thing that happened just now after the mouse froze, I pressed ctrl alt del to try and restart. it started counting down from 60 seconds..

went down to 50, then 40, then went BACK up to 60. It then started counting down again, got to 30, then firefox popped to the front, the IRC tab, asking me if I want to leave the page, then a second later it froze. I had to press the restart button on the front of the machine.
