is that countdown thing, going back up to 60 something I should be really worried about?
Heston 2017-01-25 10:46:18
carp_, that sounds like xscreensaver
Heston 2017-01-25 10:47:08
just a timer before it removes the login box
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:47:12
mtn: hi, i havent tried using different usb ports yet. It seems to work consistently everytime I turn the machine on. if the mouse freezes again, I will plug into different ports.
Heston 2017-01-25 10:48:44
carp_, try different ports and check dmesg
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:48:58
Heston: the 60 second count down is part of gnome3, i am new user to debian, so im not sure if the timer going back to 60 is something that is really dodgy and i should be worried about or not.
Heston 2017-01-25 10:49:25
carp_, you can switch to another terminal to check dmesg if the mouse stops working
Heston 2017-01-25 10:49:49
with Ctrl+Alt+F2
graps 2017-01-25 10:49:58
Hi all
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:50:28
Heston: im taking notes. dmesg, switch to 2nd terminal with ctrl, alt, f2. OK thanks for the quick tips :)
Heston 2017-01-25 10:50:38
carp_, hmm I don't use gnome3 so i couldnt say
jhutchins_wk 2017-01-25 10:51:01
carp_: Wired or wireless mouse?
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:52:04
jhutchins_wk: its wired, (an old rollerball thing without a scroll wheel). I have xp on the same machine dual boot. I have used the same mouse in the same port for years. And its seems to work fine still on the xp machine.
Heston 2017-01-25 10:52:43
did you try unplugging the mouse and then back in before rebooting?
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:53:21
Heston: nope i didnt unplug it.
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:53:35
its working at the moment again, now that ive rebooted.
jhutchins_wk 2017-01-25 10:56:26
carp_: I had one of my USB hubs (on board) go bad and it acted something like that, like the mouse was going to sleep.
carp_ 2017-01-25 10:59:23
jhutchins_wk: ok. hmm, i have a feeling its not hardware because the mouse works on the xp boot.
Heston 2017-01-25 11:00:11
xp...can you still get updates for that with the registry hack?
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:00:45
Heston: i dont use the xp machine online, only for some old programs and games.
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:00:58
i dont know (to answer the question)
Heston 2017-01-25 11:01:06
ah, makes sense
Heston 2017-01-25 11:01:40
well, next time the mouse stops, check dmesg and try reseating the cable
Heston 2017-01-25 11:01:48
go from there
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:02:47
im looking up dmesg. is this to run after booting up?
Heston 2017-01-25 11:04:21
carp_, it prints kernel messages to your terminal
greycat 2017-01-25 11:04:30
(to stdout, technically)
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:05:27
Heston: im a nooby, so when the mouse goes and i cant look up what to type in from the debian wiki, im kind of stuck and have to reboot.
greycat 2017-01-25 11:05:49
"when the mouse goes"??
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:06:21
greycat: my mouse is going unresponsive. happened a few times on this fresh debian jessie install.
Heston 2017-01-25 11:06:22
yeah, it helps to have another computer or cellphone with internet
carp_ 2017-01-25 11:06:49
ah yes, well thankyou very much for the tips guys.
Heston 2017-01-25 11:08:50
no problem
Pelle` 2017-01-25 11:16:51
Yo, dont know if i should ask here on in mint... i got a server running debian 8 and on that i got a share which i have mounted on my pc running mint. when i create folders in the mounted network share from my pc the folders get no owner etc so i cant really do anything with the folder i have just created, is there a way around this?
greycat 2017-01-25 11:17:22
Mounted how? NFS? Version 3, version 4?
greycat 2017-01-25 11:17:58
The use of the word "folder" also scares me.
Pelle` 2017-01-25 11:17:58
trough fstab //192.168.1.160/raid /mnt/raid cifs auto,_netdev,x-systemd.automount,credentials=/home/pelle/.raid,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0
greycat 2017-01-25 11:18:11
Not NFS. Windows CIFS bullshit. Fun. Good luck.
greycat 2017-01-25 11:18:39
(Just what I expected when I saw the word "folder".)
Pelle` 2017-01-25 11:19:10
... what a jolly fella you are then :)
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:25:36
How difficult it to get SELinux running on Debian 8? selinux-policy-default isn't available, apparently
jim 2017-01-25 11:28:12
hmm, you're right, selinux-policy-default seems to have missed debian 8; it was in 7 and it's in testing
jim 2017-01-25 11:28:28
maybe you can backport it from testing
jim 2017-01-25 11:29:06
(-but- if that's missing, what else could be missing)
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:29:30
right. i honestly don't know enough about selinux to know what all i need. seems there's other packages with "selinux" in the name that are missing too
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:29:48
and manually backporting sounds potentially painful
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:31:39
jim: i assume if the one in testing would "just work" then it would've already been put in jessie-backports. is that a safe assumption?
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:31:43
LambdaComplex: remember that backport script i gave you
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:31:56
dysfigured: ...vaguely
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:33:54
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/DanielFGray/bin/master/debbackport
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:34:29
you just need deb-src's for testing/unstable/experimental/etc
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:34:46
dysfigured: perhaps vim should be replaces with "$EDITOR" or "$VISUAL"
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:34:52
probably
SynrG 2017-01-25 11:35:50
you can't assume anything about the inclusion/non-inclusion of any given package in backports
LambdaComplex 2017-01-25 11:36:59
SynrG: does that mean i can't assume something in jessie-backports will actually work with a stable jessie system?
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:38:26
LambdaComplex: technically, anything outside of your release isn't considered "safe" but you're usually okay with it
dysfigured 2017-01-25 11:39:49
backports repo is a "use at your own risk" kind of thing. i'd wager 99% of the time they're not gonna 'cause you problems, assuming their built against libs from stable, or depend on newer libs from backports (that are also built against stable)
jim 2017-01-25 11:44:01
it's a good idea to find out why selinux-policy-default isn't in deb 8
