DeaDSouL_, https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo#Hybrid_Graphics
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:45:36
thanks
nick297 2017-01-25 07:45:37
jelly, yes, I did that first. added a user 'temp' and just removed all the users and their home folders and now I'm setting up the original user again. I noticed installed packages are still there, so I'm just going to see how far I come. should I get the same problem, I'll backtrack and try it again. like I said I haven't been able to setup Debian
nick297 2017-01-25 07:45:37
natively on laptops yet, so it's all part of the learning experience
jelly 2017-01-25 07:45:41
CrazyTux: is your machine capable of legacy, bios booting?
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:45:43
jelly, then, what is the solution?
towo` 2017-01-25 07:45:54
CrazyTux, don't us debian live
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:46:02
yes. I suppose.
towo` 2017-01-25 07:46:02
CrazyTux, use the real install media
jelly 2017-01-25 07:46:03
CrazyTux: if you want to try jessie live, switch to bios
jelly 2017-01-25 07:46:12
CrazyTux: or try stretch instead
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:46:38
there is a newer iso for that stretch i will try that
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:46:54
Jessly, can you suggest any Debian testing based distro that works out of the box?
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:47:03
jelly..
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:47:24
what is Stretch by the way?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:47:26
CrazyTux: I don't use derivatives really
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:47:37
the debian 9 not stable
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:47:41
next version
greycat 2017-01-25 07:47:42
!stretch
dpkg 2017-01-25 07:47:43
The release following Debian 8 "Jessie" is codenamed "Stretch" (the rubber octopus in Toy Story 3) and will be Debian 9: https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2014/11/msg00005.html. See http://wiki.debian.org/DebianStretch
jelly 2017-01-25 07:47:44
stretch is codename for current testing
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:48:05
the newest nicknames are funny
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:48:14
Bullseye for 11
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:48:21
and Burcher?
greycat 2017-01-25 07:48:22
I don't know what happens when they run out of Toy Story characters.
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:48:25
Butcher?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:48:31
well I use grml.org but that's for recovery/forensics/sysadmining not for daily use
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:48:34
whts the name again for 10?
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:49:12
Buster
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:49:19
like Dolly Buster :)
jelly 2017-01-25 07:49:22
greycat: if Linux still exists then it will be the longest living OS (or kernel) ever?
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:50:27
where can I find Debian Stretch? Please direct me to that link.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:50:44
I am new to Linux.
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:50:53
no
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:50:56
ok, how to determine which driver am I using? the opensource or the proprietary?
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:51:04
CrazyTux: wait until it is released.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:51:25
is it a stable version?
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:51:30
CrazyTux: no, it is not.
LorD_n1c0w 2017-01-25 07:51:39
debian jessie is the stable version
jelly 2017-01-25 07:52:17
SynrG: the context was they wanted to try a live image, and jessie live did not work on their system at all (uefi only?)
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:52:30
jelly: i have the context, yes.
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:52:37
ESP is uefi?
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:52:43
the installer will work fine, though.
nick297 2017-01-25 07:53:18
greycat, haha, I never realized the versions are TS characters..! brilliant
jelly 2017-01-25 07:53:20
I confess I don't know if there's a stretch live preview present at all at this time
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:53:45
jelly: wouldn't matter if there were. i wouldn't recommend it to a noob for the same reason i wouldn't recommend installing it.
jelly 2017-01-25 07:54:09
it's live, harmless to look at
greycat 2017-01-25 07:54:33
as long as it doesn't automatically search and mount hard drive partitions...
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:54:41
jelly: there are probably some kinds of harm you haven't calcuated, then
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:54:59
has anyone here heard or used Sparky Linux?
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:55:13
mostly of the "continuing to tie up debian support community resources" variety
greycat 2017-01-25 07:55:15
or come with a pre-installed rootkit or botnet process...
jelly 2017-01-25 07:55:56
SynrG: at some point we have to accept stretch questions and uses here
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:56:10
which is preform better and cooler the proprietary driver or the open-source one ?
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:56:46
jelly: after there have been public releases, sure
jelly 2017-01-25 07:57:11
SynrG: volunteer helpers won't magically appear on the release day
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:57:21
i've not been impressed so far with the calibre of question asking yet to feel comfortable recommending trying stretch in any form in this specific instance
jelly 2017-01-25 07:57:23
nor will their knowhow
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:57:33
in general, i agree with you
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:57:37
in this specific instance, not
jelly 2017-01-25 07:57:43
SynrG: they know how to write image with cp!
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:57:52
unimpressed
jelly 2017-01-25 07:57:59
:-D
dixie7z 2017-01-25 07:58:49
jelly: please..... linux.hr sec :p
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:59:11
what kind of inconveniences could be expected in case of a beginner, in using Debian Testing?
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:59:58
never mind... i figured it out.. I'm using the open source driver... but the `xrandr --listproviders` says 'providers: number 1' ... it seems the amd gpu is not enabled...
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 08:00:07
how to tell it to use it ?
greycat 2017-01-25 08:00:13
CrazyTux: start with stable, please.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:00:27
something dont work and you cannot find on docs
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:00:53
greycat, I agree. But, I am not able to create a live usb of Stable that works.
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 08:01:07
greycat: I could use some help :)
greycat 2017-01-25 08:01:11
That's because Debian Live is a joke. It's an abandoned project. Stop trying it.
greycat 2017-01-25 08:01:35
Especially don't INSTALL from it. The installer included with it is incomplete.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:01:45
you can try Systemback
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:01:58
buts not official packagex
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:02:13
why is that? Other distros provide Live images and they work.
towo` 2017-01-25 08:02:23
DeaDSouL_, if you use stable, you may need the kernel, drm and mesa from backports
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:02:24
its to create a sytem and later with systemback create a image of your system
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:02:39
on usb
towo` 2017-01-25 08:02:48
DeaDSouL_, and as long as you tell only prosa, no one can help you real
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:02:57
but a squash image
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:03:02
ok. I'll wait till Stretch is released.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:03:17
thank you guys for your help.
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:04:30
CrazyTux: the increase in popularity of EFI happened at a time when there was a decrease in manpower to do the work for the live images. so ... fell between the cracks.
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:04:44
CrazyTux: next release it will be better.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:04:54
ok
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:05:08
Will try Stretch when it is released.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:05:17
you could use it in a vm - try it
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:05:21
if you have the time
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:05:29
which one?
greycat 2017-01-25 08:05:42
If a live image is so very important to you, you should try other distributions besides Debian.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:05:43
but today i face new problem so i cannot reccomen at the time ;P
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:05:48
boot the live image in a VM, yes. that's possible
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:05:55
the stretch
greycat 2017-01-25 08:05:56
Debian has other strengths. A vibrant and viable live image isn't one.
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:05:59
CrazyTux: e.g. install VirtualBox, boot the live image in that
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:06:05
ok its more to try
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:06:07
ok
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:06:11
CrazyTux: it won't test how it will run on your new laptop directly, however.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:06:18
Where can I find Stretch?
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:06:26
not so satisfying for using in a normal way
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 08:06:45
towo`: can you give me the packages names that i have to install from backport
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:06:47
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianStretch
greycat 2017-01-25 08:06:47
If you have to ask that question, you are not ready to install a pre-release.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:07:11
I want to try Stretch. In Virtual Box.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:07:49
if it crash dont mind like a normal system
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:07:59
sometimes
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 08:08:04
towo`: if i use the proprietary driver... will it support the hybrid graphics ?
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:08:13
copy that error messages into google for example
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:08:21
but i think you shiuld try jessy
towo` 2017-01-25 08:08:31
DeaDSouL_, who knows, you havn't provide your secret hardware yet
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:09:26
you nevver tried jessy?
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 08:09:31
ok. Guys, thanks for your help. Will download Jessie and try. Leaving now. Bye. will come back later.

DeaDSouL_, and stretch would be the better choice
jelly 2017-01-25 08:21:14
and what "doesn't work on UEFI" meant
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 08:21:28
towo`: you mean upgrade to stretch ?
live 2017-01-25 08:21:28
ok
greycat 2017-01-25 08:21:40
"I tried foobar, and therefore Debian doesn't work"
awal1 2017-01-25 08:21:46
teraflops, tried it yet. but I prefer mpv/mplayer/moc bcuz they support local/live streams and both audio&video
jelly 2017-01-25 08:22:06
live: derivatives may have wildly different live image boot setups, you can't assume anything from the fact a couple derivatives did not work
greycat 2017-01-25 08:22:11
I mean, yes, we already told you Debian Live is an abandoned project that isn't very good, but still.
greycat 2017-01-25 08:22:32
Trying something OTHER THAN DEBIAN and then concluding anything about Debian is ... a logical fallacy that just blows my mind.
live 2017-01-25 08:22:37
I will wait till Stretch is released and try that.
teraflops 2017-01-25 08:23:08
awal1: yeah sorry I meant "e.g" not saying you go use mpd :P
live 2017-01-25 08:23:31
I am new here. Just thought of testing and finding what could be the issue with that unworkable live usb.
somiaj 2017-01-25 08:23:34
live: if you want a live system, you could also try to install stretch, or install jessie with a kernel and drivers from jessie-backports.
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:23:52
greycat: fsvo "abandoned" :) (it's actively producing new versions of live-wrapper, and there's a maintainer now for live-build who has committed to at least maintenance releases ...)
live 2017-01-25 08:23:57
that's too complicated for me.
SynrG 2017-01-25 08:24:11
greycat: but not an entirely inaccurate characterization
live 2017-01-25 08:24:12
Will wait for Stretch.

more poetically, "a pale shadow of its former self in the glory days"

or I will download the installer image of Jessie and install it.

jelly 2017-01-25 08:27:24

Vizva 2017-01-25 08:29:08

Vizva 2017-01-25 08:29:55
i tried stretch it have many non closed links
somiaj 2017-01-25 08:30:08
DeaDSouL_: stretch doens't have timely security support and still has some rc bugs floating around. It is fairly stable, but stable + backports is suggested unless you are willing to deal with limitations while strech freezes.
Vizva 2017-01-25 08:30:10
someone can fix it buts not worth to start with
