nick297 2017-01-25 06:50:40
OK, I think I found the corresponding journal entries for my problem (enabling User Themes = Gnome crash).
nick297 2017-01-25 06:52:23
in short: x-session-manager says gnome.shell.desktop was killed by signal 6. then it says gnome-shell.desktop respawning too quickly. then the gnome-sesson repeats that. then a red msg from x-session-manager: unrecoverable failure in required component gnome-shell.desktop
nick297 2017-01-25 06:53:37
then gnome-session says GLib-GIO-CRITICAL and some proxy has failed. after that I log out and the journal shows my session was closed
nick297 2017-01-25 06:54:57
would it be wise to just try and reinstall Gnome or is this fixable? I'd like to try and find out what caused this, because I never get Debian to work properly natively on laptops and I kinda want to do it at least once
flesiti 2017-01-25 06:59:12
hi
flesiti 2017-01-25 06:59:18
by 'ssh root@', will all my traffic be routed through that server?
flesiti 2017-01-25 06:59:34
I mean can I use ssh as way to bypass censorship?
malwar3hun73r 2017-01-25 07:00:15
i'm using debian to connect to a vpn using openvpn and the DNS is not being received properly
greycat 2017-01-25 07:00:26
If you're trying to set up a SOCKS proxy for a web browser, you want ssh -N -D someport nonrootuser@host
malwar3hun73r 2017-01-25 07:00:29
the exact same config/setup works perfectly on ubuntu
malwar3hun73r 2017-01-25 07:00:37
any ideas what could be going on?
teraflops 2017-01-25 07:01:45
malwar3hun73r: what do you mean, the dns does not show in /etc/resolv.conf?
malwar3hun73r 2017-01-25 07:01:54
correct
malwar3hun73r 2017-01-25 07:02:08
...and as soon as i asked i think i found the issue - all i needed to do was install resolvconf
nick297 2017-01-25 07:02:45
flesiti, that depends. if port 443 for example is blocked or the censoring party recognizes your SSL handshake, then no. in "normal" environments it's possible if the receiving server is on an outside network
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:03:33
uname -r isnt correct, wich file have this information? or where can i change this information
mtn 2017-01-25 07:06:20
Vizva: why do you say it is not correct?
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:06:28
its stretch but i need the virtualbox additions
grawity 2017-01-25 07:06:49
uname -r can't possibly be wrong, because it directly asks the current kernel about its own version
grawity 2017-01-25 07:06:57
so if it looks wrong, you booted the wrong kernel
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:07:08
iam not sure
teraflops 2017-01-25 07:07:21
Vizva: or reboot if you just installed a new kernel
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:07:44
because i grub it say will boot the new kernel
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:07:49
4.9
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:07:57
but uname -r give 4.8
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:08:29
and it have 2 kernel in /boot
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:09:06
i did install headers and sources not more
jelly 2017-01-25 07:09:48
nick297: reinstalling may not help. You can try to create a fresh user, log in gnome as that one. If that works, the thing triggering crashes is limited to Gnome's per-user state in your normal user, not the system
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:09:48
its not typpycal so i come to this trouble :P
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:12:29
i try now delete the older kernels because i dont change it and before make a snapshot
jelly 2017-01-25 07:12:34
Vizva: do those vbox additions get rebuilt at install time?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:13:00
,kernels
judd 2017-01-25 07:13:01
Available kernel versions are: experimental: 4.8.0-rc8-686-pae (4.8~rc8-1~exp1); sid: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.2-2); stretch: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.2-2); jessie-backports: 4.8.0-0.bpo.2-686-pae (4.8.15-2~bpo8+2); jessie: 3.16.0-4-686-pae (3.16.39-1); wheezy-backports: 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae (3.16.39-1~bpo70+1); wheezy: 3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.84-1)
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:13:12
initd
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:13:15
update
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:13:19
i will try this
jelly 2017-01-25 07:13:19
oh, 4.9 has finally landed
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:13:46
jelly i just add it to /media/cdrom
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:13:56
i didnt change anything on kernel
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:14:18
it complain that the kernel headers are not reachable
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:14:29
and uname -r give the wrong version
jelly 2017-01-25 07:14:47
Vizva: so boot into the newer kernel and it will probably be better?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:15:22
you'll have matching kernel and headers and vm extensions may be able to build?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:16:19
Vizva: if you want to be extra extra safe, grab the headers matching your currently booted kernel from snapshot.debian.org
jelly 2017-01-25 07:16:40
thensee if they build for that one as well
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:17:26
it boots into the newer kernel
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:17:36
but uname -r shows the old kernel
jelly 2017-01-25 07:17:50
Vizva: what does uname -a say?
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:18:09
moment i reboot it now
greycat 2017-01-25 07:18:22
paste the outputs of "uname -a" and "uptime" after you reboot for the umpteenth time
dixie7z 2017-01-25 07:18:28
jelly: okay... i fixed the problem with fsck and removed quiet from boot... it loads soo fast i cant read anything and then it gives me black screen again... i'm done for today. thank you for your help. what can be my next move to solve this?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:18:53
dixie7z: see if the machine actually booted and is pingable, or not
greycat 2017-01-25 07:18:55
disable whatever display manager you have
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:18:57
umpteenth?
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:19:00
:)
greycat 2017-01-25 07:19:23
also see if Ctrl-Alt-F2 brings you to a console
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:19:30
i think i fix it now
dixie7z 2017-01-25 07:20:56
i tried that ctrl alt f2... didnt work... i will ping it tommorow... can i extract some log files that would maybe solve the problem?
greycat 2017-01-25 07:21:22
It most likely freaks out when your display manager tries to start X, so disable or remove the display manager.
greycat 2017-01-25 07:21:33
Then you can work on figuring out how to make X not explode.
dixie7z 2017-01-25 07:21:40
but it doesnt even open recovery mode in grub
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:22:02
now vboxinstall.og is full lol give me more to htink about
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:22:29
but update-initramfs -u
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:22:36
maybe fix that kernel thing
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:22:45
last time stretch was not so stretching
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:23:00
how to install Debian Jessie on my new laptop?
greycat 2017-01-25 07:23:22
!firmware netinst
dpkg 2017-01-25 07:23:22
Unofficial images - containing non-free Debian packages - for installing Debian 8 "Jessie" are available from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/ . See also .
greycat 2017-01-25 07:23:49
If your laptop has devices that require non-free firmware, try that.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:24:11
ok. Can I do the entire installation offline?
nick297 2017-01-25 07:24:16
jelly, I tried adding a new user now, but I can't log in with it. I couldn't enter a password when creating the user and I can't log in when leaving the password empty. and after rebooting I got a couple of errors. and now the root password on my first account doesn't work anymore as it now needs the second user's password and that doesn't exist...
nick297 2017-01-25 07:24:16
oh god, I am still laughing, because I'm a nerd and I like weird problems that seemingly don't have a solution, but I don't think I'm ready for anything other than Ubuntu just yet...
Vizva 2017-01-25 07:24:22
now this log is very big i think i will change back to debian jessie for my works to do
jelly 2017-01-25 07:24:33
dixie7z: you may try recovery with no graphical framebuffer, read /msg dpkg nofb
jelly 2017-01-25 07:25:10
nick297: uh... how exactly did you try adding it?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:25:41
nick297: since your gnome doesn't work right, I assumed you'd log in at the console, become root and use adduser or useradd
nick297 2017-01-25 07:25:54
jelly, through the Users menu. unlock -> + sign -> name. so still in the GUI
jelly 2017-01-25 07:26:42
nick297: yeah... forget about the gui for the moment, Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in there as root, or as yourself and "su -" or "sudo -i" to root
nick297 2017-01-25 07:26:53
jelly, I'll try to add a third through the cli
jelly 2017-01-25 07:27:07
nick297: just set the password for the second one, that ought to be enough
jelly 2017-01-25 07:27:25
"passwd usernamehere" as root
jelly 2017-01-25 07:28:05
if it's not you can try a third user yes
nick297 2017-01-25 07:29:12
jelly, it worked! I enabled User themes without problems
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:29:24
I want to download the iso file and install offline entirely.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:37:22
hello, is there any problem with the live images of Debian Jessie 8.7.1?
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:37:58
I was not able to boot from the live usb of Debian Jessie.
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:38:11
is this the first time you've used a debian live image?
towo` 2017-01-25 07:38:37
maybe you try on efi
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:38:44
or that
towo` 2017-01-25 07:38:48
live-images does not have efi-support
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:39:00
yet
teraflops 2017-01-25 07:39:35
SynrG: he was told about that several times
SynrG 2017-01-25 07:40:10
sigh
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:41:31
I have an old laptop of 32 bits system. I have tried Debian Jessie Live on that and also installed it on hdd once.
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:41:45
hi
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:41:54
Now I want to try Debian Jessie the latest version on my new laptop.
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:41:57
hi, I have 2 graphics card in my laptop... how can I know which one is being used?
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:42:05
I'm using debian 8
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:42:05
I want to try live usb
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:42:13
This may seem like a funny or even hard question - but how to achieve this "bumpy" effect like this flag has (the image is very small though)?: https://s23.postimg.org/6htttnsln/en_US.png
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:42:27
DeaDSouL_: you have one dedicated and one integrated gpu I guess?
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:42:38
wpbro: yes
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:42:41
notebooks often offer hybrid usage. I would take a look at the closed nvidia drivers
jelly 2017-01-25 07:42:45
nick297: so I guess you can clean up all the gnome settings from your first user's HOME and you'll be fine. I don't know where they are stored tho, presumably under ~/.config/ but who knows
jelly 2017-01-25 07:42:55
a gnome person might.
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:43:00
yesterday, I downloaded and created a live usb of Debian Jessie Cinnamon. It was not detected during bootup.
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:43:01
How can I achieve a bumpy effect on flag, like a button? https://s23.postimg.org/6htttnsln/en_US.png
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:43:02
wpbro: it's intel and amd
nick297 2017-01-25 07:43:13
jelly, rm -rf /home/username ftw:P
towo` 2017-01-25 07:43:15
wpbro, i havent's seen him saying anything about nvidia
wpbro 2017-01-25 07:43:28
DeaDSouL_: https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo
jelly 2017-01-25 07:43:29
nick297: userdel -r, or deluser
towo` 2017-01-25 07:43:43
DeaDSouL_, you can use dri offloading for switching
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:43:53
plese provide me the correct link for live images of Debian Jessie.
jelly 2017-01-25 07:43:58
nick297: if you don't have anything important in their home, then fine
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:43:59
towo`: dri?
towo` 2017-01-25 07:44:25
DeaDSouL_, direct rendering interface
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:44:33
towo`: how to do that?
towo` 2017-01-25 07:44:36
DeaDSouL_, not able to use a search engine?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:44:40
CrazyTux: how did you write/burn the image down and to what kind of medium?
jelly 2017-01-25 07:45:03
CrazyTux: live images for jessie do not support uefi properly, I think
CrazyTux 2017-01-25 07:45:07
I used cp command. I used DD also.
DeaDSouL_ 2017-01-25 07:45:13
towo`: every time i use it, i end up with a broken distro
