Hello. I'm trying to remap my mouse thumb button. I've tried xte, xbindkeys, imwheel, and a few more. They all bind the mouse thumb to a key correctly, but there is an issue: when I am holding another mouse button (ie left click) and then I press the thumb button, then the thumb button will do nothing.
configuringmouse 2017-01-26 07:49:41
I tested it with xev, having thumb_1 remapped to SPACE key, and while pressing thumb in fact printed space, pressing thumb while holding left click printed button 8 (default mouse thumb button), so S O M E H O W the sole act of holding a mouse button DENIES EVERY REMAP TOOL AVAILABLE FOR LINUX.
configuringmouse 2017-01-26 07:50:01
I've googled for hours and there are some people who had my same issue, but no one provided an answer!!!!! i'm going crazy. I've been 4 hours on this. I just want my mouse thumb to behave as a keyboard key, why is it so complicated?
ryouma 2017-01-26 07:57:39
turning off my monitor segfaults slock. any clues? slock[14042]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f0a6840fc35 sp 00007ffcdddea7e0 error 4 in libnss_compat-2.19.so[7f0a6840b000+7000]

ahh it's a wonderful day
shewp 2017-01-26 08:10:17
sure is
nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:17:38
hi folks! i would like to ecrypt some data (backups) what will be uploaded on remote server. I'll use ecryptfs. Should i use aes256 or i can keep aes128 in question of speed?
shewp 2017-01-26 08:18:23
i'd go for 256
jolt 2017-01-26 08:18:28
if your not starved on cpu I would use 256 simply because longer takes harder to crack. And backups will probably be around long
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:18:54
nikitasius: if you have a reasonably fast processor, stick with AES-256. You won't notice much of a difference in speed.
nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:19:20
tomcres: here are `openssl speed aes` https://gist.github.com/nikitasius/c571acf0fb01a573c3c86c828b643e9c
nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:20:19
30% less speed
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:21:05
nikitasius: well, it's your call—whether you need the extra speed or the extra security, which is a greater priority
nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:22:08
jolt: tomcres: idk it there are much more security. AES little old.. now people use ECC (ecliptic).
nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:22:24
2^128 vs 2^256 but 2^128 still a lot

ryouma 2017-01-26 08:23:40
how does that compare to gpg's default (the symmetric part that takes over after the key is created by asymmetric)
ryouma 2017-01-26 08:23:43
?

jolt 2017-01-26 08:24:12
nikitasius: Well, to be honest, you only gave us two options :)
MarkL 2017-01-26 08:24:38
Hi guys, I have installed opensuse along with debian but the initial screen to choose the system, I don't remember the name, does not recognize opensuse so in the list I see just debian and ubuntu, why?
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:25:02

nikitasius 2017-01-26 08:26:03
jolt: lol :) aes192 in the middle between 128 and 256.
Brigo 2017-01-26 08:26:17
MarkL, Debian installer can't find it. It could be because of the filesytem (unlikely) or the kernel is not in the expected place or something like it.
jolt 2017-01-26 08:26:23
configuringMOUSE: have you used xev to see which keycode is sent when you press it?
Brigo 2017-01-26 08:26:35
MarkL, i don't know opensuse os i can't only guess.
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:26:55
jolt: yes, I said I tested it with xev
jolt 2017-01-26 08:27:07
oh, sorry :/
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:27:12

I am installing debian on qemu and I can't complete the last step -> install the GRUB to the hard disk. Can anyone help ?
dontknow 2017-01-26 08:27:57
MarkL, it is called grub
Brigo 2017-01-26 08:28:24
configuringMOUSE, i would guess both buttons pressed generate another code you have to remap too.
dontknow 2017-01-26 08:28:42
verumnost, elaborate
MarkL 2017-01-26 08:28:45
dontknow, yes grub
jolt 2017-01-26 08:28:47
configuringMOUSE: I just use i3vm, and there I have just mapped keys like that in i3, so maybe it's the VM's config that should handle it? Which VM are you running?
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:29:38
Brigo when I hold right mouse button, for example, and press thumb, xev displays thumb as thumb (instead of Space, my remap)
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:29:46
configuringMOUSE: a problem with SOME but not all PS2->USB adapters is they can only accept a single input at a time. there are some games which require TWO buttons to be pressed at the same time, and these "cheap" adapters can't. i wonder if you mouse might be similar? best of luck.
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:29:57
it doesn't generate another code, it just reverts to default settings
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:30:17
dontknow: qemu-system-x86_64 -hda debian.img -cdrom debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso -boot d -m 512 and everything left at defaults

thinkpad x201i its a good laptop for free-software?
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:30:56
dontknow: I see a message saying that and I can only go back to debian installer menu
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:31:16
jolt: it's neither window manager nor virtual machine related, this is just about xorg and the tools available to remap
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:31:22
configuringMOUSE: sorry, i meant PS2 as in Playstation 2 ;) but if the button is reverting to default, i doubt it's a lack of multi-input support. good luck.
dwarfmut 2017-01-26 08:31:48
guys ?
dontknow 2017-01-26 08:31:58
verumnost, interesting. i don't know
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:31:59
MarkL: what likely happened is that the last operating system you installed, when it updated grub.cfg, didn't detect opensuse and therefore didn't add it to the boot menu. I just don't know a way to fix it other than manually adding an entry to grub.cfg, and I wouldn't want to have you do that just to have it overwritten again at a later time. someone must know a better way to do this, but I'm…
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:32:06
…afraid I don't. sorry.
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:32:15

MarkL 2017-01-26 08:33:14
tomcres, thx
dontknow 2017-01-26 08:33:14
verumnost, you don't see grub install prompt?
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:33:18
!testing installer
dpkg 2017-01-26 08:33:19
Repeat after me: the testing installer is for testing the , not for installing . To install testing, do a minimal installation using the installer and ask me about testing>. Installer bugs should be filed against the debian-installer pseudopackage. https://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer/
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:33:33

dontknow 2017-01-26 08:34:24
zykotick9, yeah it makes sense
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:34:38
what is the relation to my case ?
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:34:44
dontknow: ok?!
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:34:52
I don't believe it's a bug... just something I am missing
verumnost 2017-01-26 08:35:00
maybe qemu related
jolt 2017-01-26 08:35:11
configuringMOUSE: How about xbindkeys?
dontknow 2017-01-26 08:36:03
zykotick9, it makes sense when it is testing installer
zykotick9 2017-01-26 08:36:24

configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:40:05
yes, it works, but when i am holding another mouse button it doesn't work
graps 2017-01-26 08:40:15
Hi all
graps 2017-01-26 08:41:21
Is there something else I need to install on Debian Wheezy besides postfix, if I want to send e-mail messages ?
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:41:29
http://superuser.com/questions/883782/how-do-i-properly-map-a-keyboard-key-to-a-mouse-button this guy explains it better
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:41:50
configuringMOUSE: is it possible that the combination of the two buttons is a different event? could you possibly remap that combination of buttons? (just trying to help you brainstorm…not an expert at all)
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:42:31
graps: any mail server should do, including postfix. You shouldn't require anything else.
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:42:55
tomcres: the combination of holding mouse left click and pressing thumb equals Thumb, the remapping is ignored when another mouse button is being held
graps 2017-01-26 08:43:06
tomcres: Thanks. I am working out the mail.cf and individual user mailboxes now
configuringMOUSE 2017-01-26 08:43:15
the event is the same as If i'd pressed thumb with no remap
tomcres 2017-01-26 08:43:55
configuringMOUSE: I understand your frustration. This really doesn't make much sense then.
