is there a way to select on a command line which repositories from /etc/apt-mirror.list get mirrored through apt-mirror?
xmj 2017-01-24 21:48:42
so that i can e.g. mirror repositories foo and bar at 6am (via cron), and have baz mirrored at 6pm
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:53:25
well maybe daily would be good enough
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:53:46
jelly so is this rsync super-reliable and bullet-proof?
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:53:59
since I heard rumours about owncloud being unreliable
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:54:04
so i'm hesitant to use that
jelly 2017-01-24 21:54:48
rsync itself is fine, but you still want to check the exit status
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:54:52
use case for backup would be 1.)family photos 2.) home automation databases 3.)images of pi's doing certain stuff around the house and some coding stuff
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:55:03
by exit status you mean?
jelly 2017-01-24 21:55:03
that's why there are wrappers

msevwork: each process on ending returns a value denoting success of failure, all unix-like os-es have this
jelly 2017-01-24 21:56:46
success _or_ failure
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:58:09
nice
msevwork 2017-01-24 21:58:42
have you guys tested owncloud, how reliable did you find it?
jelly 2017-01-24 21:59:06
no opinion on owncloud from me
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:00:47
msevwork, I've been toying with nextcloud
xmj 2017-01-24 22:00:53
msevwork: was that (daily good enough) in reply to me?
msevwork 2017-01-24 22:02:23
no
xmj 2017-01-24 22:02:37

TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:03:48
msevwork, I just implemented a backup strategy for my family and my parents. On both locations I have a server with a 1TB backup disk. I daily rsync to the local backup disk and afterwards rsync from the local backup to the remote backup. And every day at 23:59 a zfs snapshot is made on the backup volume
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:04:26
msevwork, works great.
xmj 2017-01-24 22:05:26
TvL2386: does the local backup disk use zfs?
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:05:34
xmj, yes
xmj 2017-01-24 22:05:38
if so, you might consider just sending the incremenntal snapshots
xmj 2017-01-24 22:05:45
zxfer is awesome for that
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:05:50
xmj, it's on my todo list to check it out
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:05:59
:)
xmj 2017-01-24 22:06:41
right, if you're already using snapshots on both local and remote backups... might just transfer the diffs between snapshots, yay incremental backups.
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:07:08
xmj, yeah that's the ultimate solution
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:08:16
I'm also in the process of replacing my 4TB data disk with ext4 by 3x4TB and want to make it zfs raidz
xmj 2017-01-24 22:09:12
buy another disk and make it striped mirror :))
tx 2017-01-24 22:09:54
well
tx 2017-01-24 22:09:56
at least it's not brtfs
tx 2017-01-24 22:10:02
btrfs*
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:12:55
xmj, well, I want the most GB for bucks. And my server (HP MicroServer Gen8) can only house 4 disks
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:13:19
of which 1 is the backup disk... This is fine and I think raidz for such a small pool is fine as well
tx 2017-01-24 22:13:43
TvL2386: 5 disks!
tx 2017-01-24 22:13:47
don't forget the top bay :)
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:14:00
yeah yeah... ok ok... I've put my samsung ssd 256GB there :)
tx 2017-01-24 22:14:03
If you use SSDs you can fit about 4 in there.
tx 2017-01-24 22:14:04
hehe
xmj 2017-01-24 22:14:06
you have a backup disk on the same server as the data comes from?
tx 2017-01-24 22:14:12
assuming you have an internal sata controller card
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:14:47
well tx, the microserver gen8 has a sata odd port internally
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:15:03
so you can shove 4x 3.5 inch in the front and have 1 sata port internally
tx 2017-01-24 22:15:19
yeah
tx 2017-01-24 22:15:22
but I filled the top with 4 SSDs
tx 2017-01-24 22:15:27
+ 4 HDDS in the front bays
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:15:50
xmj: yeah I have and yeah I know it's not very good, but I lack the hardware to do it correctly
tx 2017-01-24 22:15:51
not quite enough ports on the board :P
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:16:05
xmj and since the backups are going remote anyway: I don't mind
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:16:17
tx LOL!
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:18:23
tx, I've got one problem with the server though
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:19:16
tx, sometimes... I think after doing kernel upgrades.... It has lost the raid volume in the internal b120i controller
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:19:27
so I have to recreate it in order to make it bootable again
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:19:35
that sucks
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:19:51
and you might not want to help me, since the server is running ubuntu-16.04 :)

TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:21:13
yeah yeah, remember I only have 1 SSD... I just have to create a volume in order to have something bootable
tx 2017-01-24 22:21:21
.. what?
tx 2017-01-24 22:21:22
no you don't.
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:21:24
so it's raid0 with 1 disk -_-
tx 2017-01-24 22:21:31
you can put it into AHCI JBOD mode
tx 2017-01-24 22:21:35
I think it's even that by default.
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:21:51
it wasn't by default on my server, but it won't boot if I change it in the bios
tx 2017-01-24 22:22:31
you pelican.
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:22:36
I'm thinking the b120i controller puts something on the disk to recognize it, which interferes with the AHCI mode
tx 2017-01-24 22:22:57
yeah you'd need to do a file-level copy
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:00
to get if off raid
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:14
super silly though, what if your microserver goes bust
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:22
it's going to be annoying to recover the disk
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:31
let's hope you can just mount the partition :P
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:43
thankfully it's only single disk and not some awful parity raid setup
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:23:44
yeah I know, but I have backups :)
tx 2017-01-24 22:23:46
that's a nightmare :P
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:24:50
the SSD only contains the root filesystem and my homedir... The homedir is in the backup and the server configuration is in ansible. So I can get it up in no time
JohnSmith2 2017-01-24 22:25:48
#join bash
TvL2386 2017-01-24 22:26:32
tx, nevertheless, it annoys me that I need ILO to get it bootable again after certain updates :)
tx 2017-01-24 22:27:16
yuck
