#debian channel featuring somiaj, dpkg, awal1, _Vi, zykotick9, HeXiLeD,

somiaj 2017-01-25 14:46:10
HeXiLeD: you can also set display stuff in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ config snippits directly without having to run xrandr after xorg loads
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:46:29
!deb-multimedia
dpkg 2017-01-25 14:46:30
We recommend against using deb-multimedia.org; these unofficial packages are known to cause many hard to debug problems. They are not in Debian either because the they are poor in quality or for legal reasons. See http://deb-multimedia.org/ or ask me about , . See also , , , , .
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:46:56
though unsure if they are getting any better, I think deb-multimedia repos (the pure blend) is different than that repo
HeXiLeD 2017-01-25 14:47:12
somiaj: i am thinking just using default xorg
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:48:18
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia is different than deb-multimedia.org which might be worth looking into
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:48:34
somiaj, Already issues a while above. Primary reasons for using deb-multimedia: 1. Sometimes early access to new version (when backport is not yet available); 2. More codecs and filters <= "They are not in Debian either because the they are poor in quality or for legal reasons"
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:49:38
zykotick9: apparentally it does work provided you install from CD which not many people do, usb installs seem to not work the same due to how it looks for it on the usb thumbdrive (which may be what you are installing from)
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:49:41
Previously there was reason 0. true ffmpeg instead of libav.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:50:28
_Vi: I have yet to find multimedia that I'm not able to play with what is in debian, only thing I have gotten outside is libdvdcss and I compile that from source.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:50:38
_Vi: but I admit, my needs may not be as much as someone else
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:51:11
_Vi: my suggestion is compile the stuff you need, less likely a poor quality repo/package will mess with yoru core system, and put thigns in /usr/local and maybe something like stow to help manage.
missmbob 2017-01-25 14:51:58
i was helping someone a couple months back with random iceweasel crashes. turned out to be from a dumb dmo library. their quality is not okay
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:51:58
somiaj, This way is also in use, but for trickier things. Being integrated into the system has advantages.
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:52:22
missmbob, That's why I want to use DMO selectively, not automatically.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:54:04
_Vi: it is hard to use a repo selectivally...but choice is yours, we are just trying to give some alternatives which may have less bugs.
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 14:54:24
zykotick9: Intel 945GSE is the graphics GPU Read the debian Wiki but seemed more confusing to me than anything. I installed MESA however it doesn't seem the X server supports open GL with mesa installed
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:54:41
somiaj, I though this tricky pinning scheme is designed for such flexibility/.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:54:48
GenTooMan: what kernel / debian version are you using.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:55:21
_Vi: even then, if something has a dependency and when you use the -t deb-multimedia the pinning jumps to 990, and you will pull in depends (such as libaries) that could replace the debian ones.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:55:46
_Vi: pinning keeps things from being installed regurally, but when you do install something from there, the depends can still cause issues.
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:56:39
somiaj, I will typically see deb-multimedia in download URLs, so I can memorize potential breaking points or ^C it.
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:57:08
The problem is requesting usual except-nonbreaking "apt-get upgrade" and getting deb-multimedia's versions.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:57:32
_Vi: it should be okay, for the most part. People do use those packages...(:
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:58:28
_Vi: debian just has very high stanadards for packages, and it is a shame to me to see this standards degrageted by such a repo, but alas, I don't need any of those packages, so it isn't like I should have much of a say.
_Vi 2017-01-25 14:59:08
In libav epoch of Debian I added deb-multimedia (or debian-multimedia back then) almost automatically even if FFmpeg is not really needed at the deployment.
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 14:59:11
somiaj SMP Debian 4.8.15-2 (2017-01-04) kernel / Running Jessie 8.5 I believe. That's what the kernel version reports itself as.
somiaj 2017-01-25 14:59:31
GenTooMan: have you installed xserver-xorg-video-intel from jessie-backports as well?
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:02:35
somiaj hmmm I would say nay to that let me check how to do that.
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:05:36
GenTooMan: provided you have jessie-backports enabled (since you have the backports kernel), apt-get -t jessie-backports install xserver-xorg-video-intel
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:06:08
GenTooMan: then reboot, maybe the newer kernel/driver will work better with your card. You can also get mesa from backports if needed, but the driver should use the jessie mesa just fine
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:10:26
somiaj I will give it a try maybe it will work ... I've found 3d support under linux a bit messy especially getting it to work (blew up Gentoo a few times trying that with Nvidia based drivers).
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:10:55
somiaj: re firmware from installer - thanks. i haven't used a physical CD to install debian since wheezy... and i've never _personally_ tried to load firmware. i've just seen people in #d having _issues_ with it, and even the #d veterans seemingly unable to assist...
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:11:05
GenTooMan: I have been using the non-free nvidia blob for years with no problems. I have laptops with radeon or intel that work okay, but never tried 3d stuff on them.
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:11:54
zykotick9: oh I see lots of issues, but one day I was here and got talking about the design. It is designed to be from a seperate usb drive from a cd install, and just doesn't seem to work if installing from a usb without a second stick (and even then it may not work)
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:12:26
somiaj: which is a GREAT piece of information to know. thanks.
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:14:31
zykotick9: I haven't tested this, but trust the source that was talking about it.
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:15:26
GenTooMan: i gotta say, my personal experience with intel + debian has always been out of the box working ?!?! i have no idea what to suggest, but if it's a new chipset you might want to try the kernel from backports if you're not already running it. best of luck.
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:16:04
yea, that is why I'm pointing him to the backports driver for xorg too, that is the biggest issue I see with newer intel cards, just need the kernel/driver from backports
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:16:28
though I'm intersted to see how well stretch does and if the modesetting driver is better than the intel one which is the new change.
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:16:46
somiaj: i've never had to personally do the backported xorg stuff... but i'm sure for some cases it's exactly what is needed ;)
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:16:49
zykotick9 It's an ancient chipset actually :D
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:17:08
GenTooMan: that's weird then...
awal1 2017-01-25 15:17:53
somiaj: I tried to load firmware from usb installing from dvd; dvd installer doesn't detect the firmware in the usb. well, I did that for squeeze & wheezy. since then, I just use the unofficial iso when needed
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:18:32
there was some generation of intel that just had bad linux support, I forget which it was. Outside of that, most have just worked.
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:19:44
somiaj: there was some intel "branded" but not actually made graphics is some of the netbook systems... ploubes <-spelling?!?! or something
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:20:16
Yeah... keeps complaining "OpenGL" I should update the DRAM to 2G at least (1G works fine but 2G is like dirt cheap)
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:21:45
GenTooMan: which card is it again?
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:22:49
somiaj I just checked out a different application it appears the version of OpenGL is the issue. GREAT I think MESA should support upto 3.3 at least. I'll have to check that.
zykotick9 2017-01-25 15:23:12
somiaj: re GenTooMan they didn't give the pciid but stated "< GenTooMan> zykotick9: Intel 945GSE is the graphics GPU Read the debian..."
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:23:13
GenTooMan: there is a newer mesa in jessie-backports
somiaj 2017-01-25 15:24:32
though installing it isn't easy, you have a lot of libs you have to upgrade correctly to get dependencies to work out
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:30:14
somiaj yeah I know how that feels. It was hard to get the right version of Eclipse working on this system as Jessie doesn't use NEON.1 even. It didn't have the marketplace option so I had to uninstall and directly install Eclipse NEON.2 then I was able to install OpenSTM32 and STM32CubeMX talk about annoying.
GenTooMan 2017-01-25 15:33:50
somiaj at least I could install minicom (geesh no serial port software for linux and that ancient ncurses based tool wow talk about flash back geesh I felt like it was 1996 suddenly).
