Guys, Debian is the only distro, that works good on my NVidia Optimus notebook with Bumblebee.
GPenguin 2017-01-25 21:51:51
\o/
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:52:52
But I still have one problem: I can run apps/games with optirun/primusrun command and it works just fine, everything is fast and soomth, BUT Browsers. both, Chromium based and Firefox are slow, seem not to be accelerated at all...
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:53:31
If I open like 10 tabs in one of them, and let's say play Youtube (HTML/Flash) video, my CPU usage is high and fan blows like crazy.
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:53:46
Everything else seems to be accelereated just right....
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:53:49
Any ideas ?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:54:27
Browsers become super slow with more then 10 tabs, and use a lot of CPU
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:54:50
I have a i7 Quad-Core (8 threads) + nVidia 780M
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:55:24
I can play Metro Last Light on max on this notebook in Debian, but browsers are so slow...
GPenguin 2017-01-25 21:55:25
RebelCoder: do you run the browsers in full screen? is it better when you select a smaller window size?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:55:39
No. Not fill screen/
raidghost 2017-01-25 21:55:45
To run debian installation in UEFI-mode is that BAD?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:55:50
Small windows and spread around desktops
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:56:04
*not full screen
valentt 2017-01-25 21:56:49
morning all
Kryczek 2017-01-25 21:56:51
Hi! I can't seem to find out why https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=amd-opencl-icd is not in Testing, and the "Developer Information (PTS)" link only points to the fglrx-driver package... Was amd-opencl-icd maybe renamed?
Kryczek 2017-01-25 21:57:05
There does not seem to be any AMD opencl platform on https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=stretch&arch=any&mode=path&searchon=contents&keywords=.icd though
Kryczek 2017-01-25 21:57:27
good morning valentt
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:58:07
Anyone else has that problem with Browsers being super slow on Debian ?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:59:26
Drivers (bumblebee/primus) are installed correctly. Desktop and other apps runs fast and super smooth. Games like Metro Last Light run perfectly fine with primusrun command, but browsers (Chromium-based, FireFox) are crawling...
valentt 2017-01-25 21:59:54
I have one question that I'm ashamed I don't know how to figure out on my own... but here it goes... is it possible to gives user access to subdirectory if they don't have access to root directory above it?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 21:59:55
It seems, that HTML/Flash stuff is not accelerated at all in any browser
n1b 2017-01-25 22:00:49
it is in chrome
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:01:59
valentt, create a group, chgrp subdir to grp, add user to group, chmod g+rwx the subdir
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:02:54
RebelCoder, only real support on linux is chrome, chromium and vivaldi (which uses chromium as a render engine) which use pepper flash which is maintained by google as part of an agreement with adobe
Kryczek 2017-01-25 22:03:10
valentt: it's possible if you can make the parent directory/directories have the execute bit for the group, or for everyone as a last recourse
valentt 2017-01-25 22:03:28
DexterF, thaks
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:04:04
DexterF, I use Chrome-based browser and tried firefox too
jelly 2017-01-25 22:04:17
RebelCoder, DexterF: actually adobe took back flash support some time last year, and now they provide the latest version in both ppapi (chrome) and npapi (firefox) builds
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:04:30
both become unusable after like 10 tabs and 1 or two YouTube videos... very strange
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:04:34
raidghost, UEFI itself is bad. running debian in it requires the kernel to be signed with a key known to uefi, not sure about the situation with self compiled kernels or 3rd party ones in 2017
Kryczek 2017-01-25 22:04:58
valentt: for example I could `chmod 711 /home/kryczek/nolisting/` and `chmod 755 /home/kryczek/nolisting/forvalentt/`, then you cannot see the contents of the "nolisting" parent but you can traverse it and then see the contents of "forvalentt"
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:05:32
I have a feeling, that my Bumblebee/primus (dual-gpu) notebook somehow confuses browsers and they are not accelerated at all...
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:05:34
Hmm...
Kryczek 2017-01-25 22:05:37
valentt: if you and I were in the same group then I can restrict it even further with modes 710 and 750 respectively
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:05:38
RebelCoder, optimus... hybrid, intel and nvidia? and you switch them? which does the browser run in?
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:06:03
jelly, did not know that, thanks. still flash must die :)
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:06:30
I don´t switch. Everything (desktop, apps) runs on Intel by default...and if I want to run a specific app/game on NVidia, i do: primusrun ./game
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:07:11
If I do that to a browser and force it on Nvida... my cooling fan just explodes even if browser just sits there...
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:07:28
RebelCoder, fancy filesystem? how much RAM? swap setup? hdd or ssd?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:07:34
So it seems, that both browsers are not using any of the cards and are CPU bound
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:07:59
i7 (Quad-Core, 8 threads), SSD, 16GB Ram
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:08:09
It is a laptop
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:08:40
I run TONS of apps on my 2 screens, 8 desktops. Everything runs super smooth, but browsers...
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:08:43
RebelCoder, browser on primusrun any better?
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:08:43
no SWAP space...
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:09:17
Have not tried much,. but it does kick in my cooling fan to a max just runnign the browser with primusrun
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:09:42
Games with primus - ok, it renders stuff, but browser, just sitting there... hmmm
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:09:55
i will try somethign else...
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:09:58
today.
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:10:10
jsut wondered if anyone else had this problem and fixed it somehow
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:10:12
RebelCoder, for testing, create a swap file of say 1gb or 2 and activate that as swap. slim chance that they don't really need it but constantly are calling out to it "just in case". not quite sure all programs out there are yet ready to be ok like that without swap, especially ram hungry ones
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:10:52
I have 40% ram free at all times. so never used Swap space
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:10:58
will give it a try!
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:11:00
thanks
DexterF 2017-01-25 22:11:13
RebelCoder, memory management works in mysterious ways :)
RebelCoder 2017-01-25 22:11:22
Yeah... i guess..
