GenTooMan: you can do what you want most likely with screen directly without having to mess around with minicom

Hello, I am trying to update tor browser but get "You might be under attack, or there just may be a networking problem."
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:12:26
can anyone recommend a program to make an ISO snapshot of a running OS?
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:12:33
I want to back up my VPS
dTal 2017-01-25 17:12:47
an ISO snapshot?
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:13:00
yes, just a backup to an ISO
dTal 2017-01-25 17:13:09
why an ISO?
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:13:10
for downloading and archiving elsewhere
dTal 2017-01-25 17:13:23
as opposed to say a tarball
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:13:31
so i can mount it in VM
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:13:42
i guess a tarball would suffice
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:14:46
mondorescue looks like a decent tool for the job, but I can't find much info about it
dTal 2017-01-25 17:15:06
that's a good reason for wanting an ISO (you can mount tarballs but you need fuse), but it's not neccesarily a good reason to dump it as an ISO in the first place
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:15:28
i've got a dodgy vps service that i want to seamlessly ditch

Hello, I am trying to update tor browser but get "You might be under attack, or there just may be a networking problem."
dTal 2017-01-25 17:17:07
[5~
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:17:09
backing up the OS while it's running is the biggest requirement
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:20:01
any suggestions, dTal ?
qman__ 2017-01-25 17:20:59
SpaceAce: stop all your services, rsync to destination, install bootloader at destination, boot
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:23:22
ambient: tor itself? the tor package?
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:23:27
seems pretty straightforward, qman__
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:23:27
thanks
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:23:45
that'll cover my MySQL database and web apps, too?
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:23:50
and full filesystem
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:24:16
what seems straightforward has not been so in debian ime
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:24:49
tons of things to watch for, make sure the chroot is correct, /etc/*tab, etc.
ambient 2017-01-25 17:24:55
ryouma, tor browser.
qman__ 2017-01-25 17:25:04
SpaceAce: yes, just make sure you stop mysql first, etc
qman__ 2017-01-25 17:25:12
to make sure it stays consistent
SpaceAce 2017-01-25 17:25:12
i'll stop everything before i proceed
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:25:14
ambient: somebody else just brought that up recently
qman__ 2017-01-25 17:25:34
you'll boot a live environment in your destination, format the filesystem, and set up ssh so you can rsync over
qman__ 2017-01-25 17:26:08
rsync the data, tweak configs like /etc/fstab and /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts as needed, install the bootloader (probably grub), and be able to boot
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:27:41
if you actually wanted to make an iso of the running system you can use systemback https://launchpad.net/systemback
ambient 2017-01-25 17:27:54
ryouma, and the answer is...?
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:28:26
but mainly the problems i had were to do with bugs and stuff i did not understand in grub and the ramdisk for teh kernel
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:28:49
ambient: i don't know, are there no bugs on it? is this only recent? it has always had such problems afaik
ambient 2017-01-25 17:29:01
oh pfff
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:29:24
debian adds some kind of extension to the name, then tries to dl a url that does not exist on the server. you could hack the script to get the correct url maybe. dunno.
awal1 2017-01-25 17:29:41
Any nice script for restore apps minimized to system tray?
ryouma 2017-01-25 17:29:42
but then people say the thing doesn't download itself either, so that might not be related to the script
awal1 2017-01-25 17:30:35
I think that icewm have that feature, but I don't find how it's done googling
awal1 2017-01-25 17:32:07
also kde somewhere in advanced settings have a feature for minimize to tray any app (and restore it via keyboard shortcut)
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:32:35
you can use the ancient alltray too
awal1 2017-01-25 17:33:06
I tried it under wheezy it was very buggy
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:33:16
it does suck, yeah.
awal1 2017-01-25 17:35:59
I think it was like once iconified usinng alltray some apps never "restore"
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:36:38
oh yeah. it would actually restore them to different workspaces so you never saw it
awal1 2017-01-25 17:36:58
maybe; I dont remember
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:37:42
awal1: restoring sounds like a job for a panel/taskbar, not the systray
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:37:58
or a job for the app that shows an icon there
josndir 2017-01-25 17:39:07
How do I ssh into another computer with an ethernet cable connected to it from mine allowing me to control it?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:39:26
ssh is supposed to be set up on it, how do I get the ip?
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:39:28
josndir: um.. ssh host?
awal1 2017-01-25 17:40:14
nkuttler, going to boot my debian icewm vm and maybe I find what icewm does exactly
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:40:19
josndir: where does the target get its ip from?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:40:22
Also, I am connected to a wireless network on my computer which is connected to the internet, and when I connect to the other computer (in my attempts) it disconnects me from the internet for some reason
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:40:42
josndir: "connect"?
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:41:01
josndir: do you have some kind of router in this setup?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:41:50
nkuttler: I've gathered that I should setup a dhcp server in order to receive its ip through tshark -i eth0 maybe :s
josndir 2017-01-25 17:42:22
the router which I'm wirelessly connected to connects me to the internet if that's what you mean
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:42:23
josndir: if both boxes are directly connected, no need for that. just give both nics ips on the same network
josndir 2017-01-25 17:43:06
nkuttler: the other computer isn't wirelessly connected
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:43:13
josndir: yeah
josndir 2017-01-25 17:43:13
to the internet
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:43:30
josndir: do you only want to ssh into that computer, or do you actually want to share your internet connection?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:43:54
sharing the internet connection would be useful..
josndir 2017-01-25 17:44:04
so let's go with that
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:44:17
josndir: well, the first step is to be able to ping each other
josndir 2017-01-25 17:44:21
but I also want to be able to ssh into it
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:44:58
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_sharing
josndir 2017-01-25 17:45:04
nkuttler: but how do I find out its ip? as soon as I turn up my eth0 I get disconnected from my wireless internet
