#debian channel featuring awal1, dpkg, nkuttler, Heston, Freemon, josndir,

nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:45:38
josndir: how do you turn it up?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:46:03
nkuttler: ifup eth0
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:46:16
josndir: and what's in your /etc/network/interfaces ?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:47:07
nkuttler: https://paste.debian.net/910647/
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:47:28
josndir: yeah, you don't want dhcp there, you want a static ip
josndir 2017-01-25 17:47:43
hmm why not dhcp :s
josndir 2017-01-25 17:47:49
I thought it does it all for me :D
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:48:08
josndir: sure, if you configre a dhcpd for your wired connection
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:48:20
josndir: but there's nothing on your wired network
josndir 2017-01-25 17:49:04
only that one computer I want to connect to, and I also want to be able to connect to a router with a wire to access the internet at higher speeds
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:49:16
josndir: you have a wired router?
josndir 2017-01-25 17:49:38
nkuttler: wireless and wired
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:49:41
josndir: then plug both boxes into that. don't link them directly
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:49:54
that should be *much* easier
josndir 2017-01-25 17:50:00
nkuttler: right now I only have access to a wireless one
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:50:26
right now you're contradicting yourself
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:50:54
so, anyway, static ip, on *both* boxes, then ping each other, then read the arch wiki guide, it looks good enough
josndir 2017-01-25 17:51:17
I have a wired router at another place, so I don't want to set dhcp up in a way that I can't connect to the internet with a wire anymore you see :\
josndir 2017-01-25 17:51:33
but right now for the next weeks I only have a wireless router
josndir 2017-01-25 17:52:30
nkuttler: how do I figure out the ip of the other computer? it's headless and I only have ssh running on it
josndir 2017-01-25 17:52:41
so I can only see the ip if I ssh into it
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:53:01
josndir: why do you think it even has an ip?
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:53:08
josndir: is it configured to use dhcp?
missmbob 2017-01-25 17:53:09
sudo arp-scan 192.168.0.0/24
josndir 2017-01-25 17:53:33
yes nkuttler
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:54:48
josndir: yes, then you'll need to run a dhcpd on the wired interface
josndir 2017-01-25 17:55:15
so my /etc/network/interfaces is correct?
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:55:40
josndir: no
nkuttler 2017-01-25 17:56:43
josndir: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Internet_sharing
josndir 2017-01-25 18:03:46
nkuttler: my initial problem, however, is that if I turn up my eth0 interface it kicks me off the wireless internet for some reason, and I still need to set up my static interface without knowing what ip values to use. I know that most networks have the 192.168.x.x address but my wireless for example is 10.36.1.146
josndir 2017-01-25 18:05:46
nkuttler: also, what does the "address" stand for (from debian network configuration wiki) and the "gateway" ? is the address the address of my wireless router or my laptop which was wirelessly assigned to me?
josndir 2017-01-25 18:06:20
(sorry I am a complete noob with networking)
Heston 2017-01-25 18:13:07
is it normal to lose all input responsiveness while my swap is being utilized?
Heston 2017-01-25 18:14:07
I'll open one too many firefox tabs any desktop locks up completely until my swap partition is finished being written to...
Heston 2017-01-25 18:14:25
and my desktop*
awal1 2017-01-25 18:17:27
nkuttler, right, it's a matter of taskbar. Icewm have a file called 'winoptions' used to configure settings for individual application windows. Example: "Firefox.tray: Exclusive" adds an icon for firefox in system tray (and never creates a task panel button)
awal1 2017-01-25 18:18:33
missmbob, ^ works better than using alltray :P
awal1 2017-01-25 18:18:56
for icewm users, I meant (I'm not)
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:19:47
hi rooom
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:20:21
any1 alive?
awal1 2017-01-25 18:21:17
only you; life ended 1 minute ago
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:28:35
aww
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:28:38
i have a problem
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:29:21
my desktop icons are missing .. whenever i turn on the show desktop icons the icons seems to appear in 2 pairs each over lapping each other
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:29:35
you dont have a problem. you have unresolved situations. once you fix those situations you'll be all good
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:30:00
problem is an unresolved situations
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:30:46
now i can click on 1 pair of icons and other pain of icons i cant they are like after image of the former icons
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:30:55
what did i messed up
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:31:22
every time i reboot its happnes and i have no idea wat caused it
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:31:25
this sounds like stretch. is it?
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:31:31
yes
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:31:36
!debian-next
dpkg 2017-01-25 18:31:36
#debian-next is the channel for testing/unstable support on the OFTC network (irc.oftc.net), *not* on Freenode. If you get "Cannot join #debian-next (Channel is invite only)." it means you did not read it's on irc.oftc.net.
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:31:44
they'll know better
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:31:51
i tried their its like a empty house with no replies
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:32:30
is it a bug ? or is it me
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:32:50
i wouldnt know. i dont use stretch so i dont know what's currently boken.
missmbob 2017-01-25 18:33:28
that doesnt sound like stable desktop to be sure
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:33:41
hmmm ok
n4dir 2017-01-25 18:34:40
If #debian-next doesn't give replies, there are still other options trying to get help, forums, mailing-lists, etc
Freemon 2017-01-25 18:34:50
