hello!
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:16:19
I am having trouble installing debian on my 2014 macbook pro retina - I am using the nonfree netinstaller testing (stretch) - and the internet / networking hardware can't be found
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:16:38
anyone happen to know what's up with that?
Atm0spher1c 2017-02-23 17:17:46
nyexpress: wifi? use ethernet
yukip 2017-02-23 17:17:51
debian is old, use ubuntu
somiaj 2017-02-23 17:17:57
nyexpress: do you have a wired connection you can use for the install? For some reason I think some of those wifi cards (b43) debian can't distribute the firmware, and you have to run a script to get it.
theraspberry 2017-02-23 17:17:59
lol
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:18:17
oof I don't have a dongle :(
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:18:51
but thank you for the heads up guys
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:19:06
You can install on another device. And sneaker net it over though. Seems that the b43-fwcutter dropped --unsupported for my older dell
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:19:46
or get it from packages.debian.org and download.openwrt.org/sources/
somiaj 2017-02-23 17:20:16
yea I had to do an offline extraction of the b43 firmware with b43-cuuter once, it wasn't easy so not something I usually suggest
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:20:38
yeah I had some trouble with the b43 thing, didn't seem to work
somiaj 2017-02-23 17:20:59
it works good if you have another way to access the internet.
Atm0spher1c 2017-02-23 17:21:16
That was years ago for me, works with wired connection and nonfree
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:21:57
seems that it's https://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/ plurals *sigh*
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:23:17
I just need b43-fwcutter>
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:23:26
I just got to remember to use the wheezy version of b43-fwcutter for my older 32 bit dell
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:23:35
?*
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:24:25
You need b43-fwcutter and the firmware to cut
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:24:37
Plus manually move it to /lib/firmware/b43/
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:25:03
And if it's really old need the b43legacy stuff, but probably not in your case (or in the case of my dell)
Atm0spher1c 2017-02-23 17:26:06
there are packages firmware-b43-installer, b43-fwcutter
nyexpress 2017-02-23 17:26:30
thank you guys so much
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:27:11
This one is default... https://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-5.100.138.tar.bz2 ...but I need this one for mine... https://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2
Atm0spher1c 2017-02-23 17:27:51
why? firmware-b43-installer does this for you
Shadow_7 2017-02-23 17:28:10
Because mine is an old P4 32 bit circa XP era

Gnome is not recognizing my Cintiq at its setting windows, though you can see that my machine recognizes there's a Wacom plugged in... And a Wacom drive running over there...
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 17:38:42
What's holding it from doing 1+1=2?
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 17:39:10
Is what I would ask you guys, if any of you were still awake...
