lafleurdubien 2017-02-28 10:54:39
does anyone here have experience writing tutorials for Digital Ocean?
missmbob 2017-02-28 10:55:04
lafleurdubien: might wanna try #debian-offtopic
missmbob 2017-02-28 10:55:54
lafleurdubien: and hey apparently there's #digitalocean
nickgaw 2017-02-28 10:57:29
Is there a direct installlation image for sid or is installing testing then upgrading with non-free firmware the only option?
greycat 2017-02-28 10:57:51
installing stable and then upgrading is another option
nickgaw 2017-02-28 10:58:11
true but I like the least upgrade path
missmbob 2017-02-28 10:58:57
nickgaw: fyi if you're going to be using sid its support is at #debian-next on oftc
nickgaw 2017-02-28 10:59:49
ok
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:00:44
If I wish to install stable and do encrypted file systems and want to not need lvm and not wait the long time it takes to clear out an entire disk is this possible at all provided I have a boot partition?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:01:58
sure. you can just cancel out of the erasing process btw. it doesnt stop the installer, it just wont overwrite the current data. which might not be very smart but you can
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:03:00
I have / and /home on different partitions is there a way to keep one of them unencrypted or do I first need to completely backup the one I don't want to lose?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:06:00
i dont understand what you're asking. you encrypt only what you want. what you encrypt will be lost forever. whatevver is on that partition must be backed up to be restored
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:06:24
So there is no way to encrypt in place?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:06:28
no
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:06:47
Do I need to use lvm to do the encryption or not?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:07:26
i dont think the installer requires lvm. that'd be weird. i always use lvm though so i cant say for certain
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:08:29
Is it normal for not all of the space to be around after you do encryption of an entire disk like with 1 TB disk I would only have 800 gigs left for my own use?
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:09:06
nickgaw: you are using ext4 file systems inside the encryption?
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:09:21
yes what ever the default is
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:09:50
nickgaw: I'm sure encryption takes up some space, but defaults on ext4 file system is to reserve 5% for root, which can be a large number on a big filesystem
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:10:31
so regardless I won't have the full 1 TB and I usually only reseve %1 for root
ryouma 2017-02-28 11:10:33
encryption should take up no space except for the tiny header, no?
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:10:42
http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/124669/how-much-storage-overhead-comes-along-with-cryptsetup-and-ext4
ryouma 2017-02-28 11:11:03
i think it's inodes, reservation for root, and who knows
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:11:24
nickgaw: also note that some drives when they say TB mean 10^(whatever power) and others use 1024, so this can lead to differences between what the drive is and what size you get.
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:11:32
How small can I make the boot partition it is a MBR system?
greycat 2017-02-28 11:11:51
I think *all* the drive manufacturers switched over to the powers-of-10 system.
ryouma 2017-02-28 11:21:37
scsi used the other one
ryouma 2017-02-28 11:21:59
nickgaw: df can show either
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:22:55
I mean how large should I make the /boot partition when I reinstall the system if I want the rest of the space to be encrypted?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:23:13
i like having 250M
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 11:24:33
Large enough to convert it to a full install when you find out you don't need it.
google77 2017-02-28 11:31:05
hi
google77 2017-02-28 11:31:23
so, stretch is now in full freeze?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:31:40
yes
google77 2017-02-28 11:31:45
Does that mean it will become stable soonish?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:32:01
google77: when the green gets to 0 https://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/
google77 2017-02-28 11:32:23
nice
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:33:24
in experimental there is newer packages then sid so if I want to upgrade the orca screen reader or emacs I can upgrade one package at a time but could the entire system break with just one package upgrade?
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:34:22
nickgaw: experimential is not a complete set of packages. Packages are put there because they are too unstable for sid, or to not yet ready for sid. Note during the freeze, they are also put there because dev's don't want to bump the sid version until after the release
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:34:26
!slushy
dpkg 2017-02-28 11:34:27
When a release becomes frozen, tends to partially freeze as well. This is because developers are reluctant to upload radically new software to unstable, in case the frozen software in testing needs minor updates and to fix release critical bugs which keep testing from becoming .
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:34:51
nickgaw: you should only grab a packages from experimential as you need them, but I would suggest waiting for them to make it into sid.
stoned 2017-02-28 11:36:01
Maybe try building it yourself?
stoned 2017-02-28 11:36:05
That's always fun.
google77 2017-02-28 11:36:11
So it's a matter of months maybe weeks when testing becomes stable, nice...
stoned 2017-02-28 11:36:18
yes.
stoned 2017-02-28 11:36:19
Very nice.
stoned 2017-02-28 11:36:33
I love my 3.16 kernel and stable desktop that doesn't crash or go goofy.
somiaj 2017-02-28 11:36:59
google77: months, sometime this summer is my rough bet, others have been more specific

google77: you had me going there
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:37:54
dpkg buzz
dpkg 2017-02-28 11:37:54
it has been said that buzz is Debian 1.1, released June 1996 (474 packages, 2.0 kernel, fully ELF, dpkg). Ask me about .
google77 2017-02-28 11:37:59
well, still fine

dpkg debian 0.1
dpkg 2017-02-28 11:38:28
nickgaw: parse error: dunno what the heck you're talking about
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:38:54
What is the first debian version that ever came out before buzz?
Zathras 2017-02-28 11:39:25
nickgaw, https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/project-history/ch-detailed.en.html
google77 2017-02-28 11:39:29
dpkg debian 1.0
dpkg 2017-02-28 11:39:29
i heard debian 1.0 is a mistake by InfoMagic. They released an unstable version of Debian as 1.0. Google groups archives the posting by Bruce Perens announcing this at http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=m0tPBxF-000F9vC%40mongo.pixar.com . The first stable Debian release was 1.1, ask me about .
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:40:31
can buzz still be installed into a virtual machine or sarge with the debian-installer?
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:40:44
dpkg sarge
dpkg 2017-02-28 11:40:44
Sarge is the codename for Debian GNU/Linux 3.1, released June 6th, 2005. Sarge security support ended on 2008-03-31, this release is no longer supported. Sarge users should upgrade to Etch, ask me about etch>. Removed from the mirrors; ask me about , . nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:42:43
how do I contact dpkg's owner?
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:43:17
nickgaw: dondelelcaro owns it.
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:43:24
at least he did
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:43:50
so how can you add to dpkg
missmbob 2017-02-28 11:44:22
for simple things just "dpkg foo is blahblah"
nickgaw 2017-02-28 11:44:39
can you delete things from there that you add?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 11:45:00
so... buzz, rex, bo, hamm, slink, potato, woody (started using debian at woody), sarge, etch, lenny, squeeze, wheezy, jessie, stretch (soon)
