hello, is Debian Stable faster than Ubuntu or many of its derivatives?
CrazyTux 2017-02-23 20:21:48
ok
CrazyTux 2017-02-23 20:21:57
bigger means what?
stew 2017-02-23 20:22:18
CrazyTux: so when the kernel is ready to start processes, "the userland" it starts /sbin/init which in turn starts other programs. what exactly /sbin/init is can be something like systemd or sysvinit or upstart or something. Your main interaction with it would probably be starting and stopping of services

debian based distros, red-had based distros, arch, etc.
CrazyTux 2017-02-23 20:22:50
ok
squelch 2017-02-23 20:23:15
mean 99 percent of distros
n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:23:20
yup
squelch 2017-02-23 20:24:44
you can see it as something like the windows registry
n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:24:59
i mean: it's not that a desktop-user fiddles with the init system all the time. I would only matter if you want to use and learn the de facto standard of today.
n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:25:33
for example to work in a professional environment.
stew 2017-02-23 20:25:40
systemd was very controversial when it started becoming default on distros and remains controversial, to the poitnt where there are distros devoted solely to not having it., so you'll notice that it may seem to get more attention than it deserves and brought up when it doesn't seem to otherwise matter
n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:26:26
i only know of one distro which only has that purpose ...
CrazyTux 2017-02-23 20:26:43
ok
CrazyTux 2017-02-23 20:33:13
ok
stew 2017-02-23 20:37:03
the fact that debian defaults to gnome could not be more unconsequential. its only because 15 years ago or whenever it was that joeyh was writing the installer, gnome happened to be in better shape at the time in testing or something to this effect
n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:37:29
like said: if you want a different GUI, just download a different installation iso
squelch 2017-02-23 20:37:53

n4dir1 2017-02-23 20:38:04

squelch 2017-02-23 20:38:39

stew 2017-02-23 20:39:10
n4dir1: he said gui, not guest os
squelch 2017-02-23 20:39:40

stew 2017-02-23 20:39:44
squelch: yes, its the checkbox that is checked in the installer by default. you can uncheck it and check a different one
