#debian channel featuring Rusty1_, Aberts10, Shadow_7, themill, lhx, n4dir1, and 5 others.

Aberts10 2017-02-24 17:49:17
But from what im getting, It seems alot more involved than that... And kernel versions and programs for the normal debian are far behind.
themill 2017-02-24 17:49:41
the kernel is the easiest thing to keep up to date (and also probably the least interesting)
Shadow_7 2017-02-24 17:50:01
Mostly I run debian stable and compile a few programs from source. Many times creating .deb's that I install with apt/dpkg.
lhx 2017-02-24 17:50:24
Aberts10: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-choosing.en.html
lhx 2017-02-24 17:50:54
Aberts10: debian stable + selected backports are also doable
AvatarA 2017-02-24 17:50:55
I don't think about how far or less far behind I am, just see if I need or don't need whatever is new(er)
Shadow_7 2017-02-24 17:52:26
A custom kernel if I have bleeding edge hardware. A wifi driver for the kernel. And cwm a BSD window manager. But mostly stable is good enough.
n4dir 2017-02-24 17:52:33
Aberts10: if you *always* want to run the newes software releases 2 days before they were released, then debian isn't the right distro (not even sid, due to the freeze)
Shadow_7 2017-02-24 17:53:19
I do miss a few things abandoned from the distro over the years. gftp, pornview, ... ... ...
n4dir 2017-02-24 17:55:34
if you don't want to reinstall but only go for upgrade and dist-upgrade: that works for all debian "versions" (stable, testing, sid)
Aberts10 2017-02-24 17:55:34
n4dir: Instead of libre office 5.3, i'd be using 5.2 or 5.0 ... I assume thats within debian testing or sid.
Aberts10 2017-02-24 17:55:57
Im going to test out Sid for a while... See how it goes... And get a idea of what software versions its using.
n4dir 2017-02-24 17:55:58
I guess i got your point. I only point out that though debian-sid usually has software rather new, during the hard freeze new releases hardly don't enter sid either.
Aberts10 2017-02-24 17:56:35
n4dir: how long do these freezes last? and whats their purpose?
Shadow_7 2017-02-24 17:56:54
The freeze is pre-release of the next debian stable
n4dir 2017-02-24 17:56:55
folks say: when it's ready. I would say round the lines of 6 months
themill 2017-02-24 17:56:59
!freeze
dpkg 2017-02-24 17:56:59
The 'freeze' is when large changes to testing version of Debian are stopped for few months. During this period, no new package uploads are made except to fix critical bugs or to provide documentation updates. During the freeze, bugs are squashed to 'stabilize' the release to make the new 'stable'. Stretch started to freeze in Nov 2016 and entered full freeze on 5 Feb 2017. Also ask me about , .
themill 2017-02-24 17:58:03
randomly introducing new packages also introduces new incompatibilities
Aberts10 2017-02-24 17:59:24
seems reasonable to me.
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:00:22
Aberts10: also, if running sid, you want to install apt-listbugs and listchanges. A good backup is also a good idea.
missmbob 2017-02-24 18:00:54
Aberts10: and go to #debian-next on oftc for support
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:01:03
i would always say to first run stable for a good while, to get the hang of it.
squigz 2017-02-24 18:01:13
Why is #debian-next on OFTC, not on Freenode?
Aberts10 2017-02-24 18:01:17
n4dir1: It was unusable for me.
missmbob 2017-02-24 18:01:29
!tell squigz about oftc move
squigz 2017-02-24 18:01:35
missmbob: ty :)
Aberts10 2017-02-24 18:01:40
n4dir1: alot of libraries were full versions behind... so i couldn't install what i needed
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:01:43
usable or not, one will want to learn debian way before running testing or sit
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:01:45
sid
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:02:18
your choice. install listbugs and listchanges (the latter: or similar)
Rusty1_ 2017-02-24 18:04:07
lintian doesnt show known bugs?
themill 2017-02-24 18:04:33
Rusty1_: lintian has nothing to do with bug report
Aberts10 2017-02-24 18:04:34
Will libraries get updated to a recent version after enabling sid?
n4dir1 2017-02-24 18:09:51
yup.
