Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:07:10
When starting a YouTube vid with VLC, it plays the sound, but not the frames. How can I fix that?
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:07:39
Also, I disabled JavaScript. How can I play vids on YouTube and other video portals?
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:07:51
Donquixote: use mpv instead? :P seriously vlc in jessie has some issues
johnkeates 2017-02-28 02:08:05
it does, but it also plays anything when it does :p
johnkeates 2017-02-28 02:08:20
totem works too
johnkeates 2017-02-28 02:08:26
most of them use the lame libs anyway
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:08:42
I have GNOME MPlayer :x
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:08:45
none of those three use the same libs :P
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:09:11
Donquixote: mpv is the new fork of mplayer
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:09:26
I cannot play the video
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:10:25
Please help
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:10:39
i thought giving you two options was helping you out. want more?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:11:08
Donquixote: what does avprobe or ffprobe say about the video? is it just audio?
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:11:15
I don't really want to install another program
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:11:29
And I'd like to be able to play the videos directly in the browser
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:11:32
Without JS
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:11:35
you'll also find out that it doesnt play x265 videos
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:11:47
the vlc in stretch does
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:11:59
in broswer likely require gstreamer stuffs
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:12:30
i doubt any real site (maybe some porn sites do) will stream without js
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:12:54
Do I need to download the video to test it?
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:12:59
It's not just that video
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:13:03
No YouTube video works
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:13:27
Donquixote: the cisco h.264 is disabled by default. about:config ... in browser.
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:13:34
missmbob, install ffmpeg
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:13:48
Donquixote: i told you, vlc in jessie has known issues. here's your youtube one https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=769739
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:13:50
with about:plugins to check it's status
judd 2017-02-28 02:13:50
Bug http://bugs.debian.org/769739 in vlc (open, moreinfo): «vlc: Can't play videos in webm format on YouTube»; severity: normal; opened: 2014-11-16; last modified: 2017-01-01.
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:13:57
I use Chromium
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:14:16
oops Donquixote install ffmpeg, sorry missmbob
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:14:51
or libavtools ... depending on variant
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:14:58
libav-tools
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:15:22
There are four packages that include ffmpeg
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:15:30
Donquixote, chromium flashplayer doesn't work very well, try chrome-browser instead
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:15:34
But not a single "ffmpeg" Package
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:15:42
Hm?
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:15:45
Donquixote: ffmpeg is in jessie-backports
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:15:45
I don't use Flash
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:16:00
avconv is a fork of ffmpeg. lots of libav* packages
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:16:09
Using Flash would defeat the point of disabling JavaScript
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:16:20
I want to have a 100% free system
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:16:24
Donquixote: but that bug does explain your youtube issue
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:16:24
ok , must be an older debian
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:17:37
I'm installing libav-tools
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:17:45
Donquixote, there's still no getting away from flash , even youtube still uses it on some videos ,HTML5 hasn't been totally adopted yet
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:18:25
mostly live streams although I think the newer firefox_esr can cope with those
zykotick9 2017-02-28 02:19:02
BluesKaj: "there's still no getting away from flash" <- i dunno, i've managed to live without it for quite a while... ymmv
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:19:42
I've been far less lucky trying to watch youtube on 512MB machines
stoned 2017-02-28 02:19:56
You can do it
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:19:58
Shadow_7, I switched from ESR to chrome due to flash not working on some websites
stoned 2017-02-28 02:20:00
I did it w/ zram
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:20:05
90% of Content can be accessed without flash. I'll gladly forego the rest
stoned 2017-02-28 02:20:11
Every so often it will swap oout, that could be slow.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:20:32
BluesKaj: freshplayerplugin + the PPAPI variant of flash. Granted from source for the plugin. And installed in ~/.mozilla only.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:20:33
I don't use gui browser unless I need to
stoned 2017-02-28 02:20:36
I use elinks
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:20:48
I use wget ... :)
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:20:53
Even Hitbox and Flash can be used with neither Flash or JS
johnkeates 2017-02-28 02:20:59
stoned: and what do you use when you want to watch some porn?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:21:18
zykotick9, well that's cool, but some users probly don't have your patience or selectivity..users like me :-)
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:21:33
not really... I like my pictures... Asc-ii art only goes so far
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:22:01
(but it sure compresses well)
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:22:49
No change for VLC or MPlayer
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:23:05
Donquixote: have you tried minitube?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:23:47
Shadow_7, thanks for the tip ,...I'm just becomining reaquainted wit debian after many yrs on other deb derivatives
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:24:09
No change for chromium either
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:24:16
Minutube works only with YouTube, right?
stoned 2017-02-28 02:24:29
ZFS on linux (openzfs) all those zfs solutions on linux are terrible.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:24:32
There's youtube-dl, which works on many sites beyond youtube.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:24:42
They have betrayed me and soured me. Now I don't want to sue ZFS
stoned 2017-02-28 02:24:45
use*
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:24:49
chromium doesn't use the same embedded flasg plugin as chrome does
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:24:52
mpv has a youtube-dl hook fyi
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:24:54
captured the other space series with that, and star trek renegades
stoned 2017-02-28 02:25:07
I am wondering, I have 2x 3TB disks, that used to be in a ZFS mirror. Now I want to use a diff file system, but I don't know what.
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:25:23
BluesKaj: of course it does. flash is installed but downloading chrome and ripping out the flash
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:25:28
by* downloading
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:25:51
in jessie anyway
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:25:56
actually since v.54 flash is not longer inside chrome
stoned 2017-02-28 02:26:05
missmbob: not as easy as that. chromium needs to be compiled with flash and whatever widewine(netflix) plugins etc. only then can you drop ripped plugins from chrome into chromium.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:26:10
otherwise they would not work.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:26:11
you get it from the adobe site with the rest of the flashes... the PPAPI version
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:26:13
missmbob, that's not been my experience
stoned 2017-02-28 02:26:22
does debian's version of chromium come compiled w/ this support?
stoned 2017-02-28 02:26:41
I'd happily switch to chromium if so. I don't want to recompile chromium.
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:26:52
stoned: yes
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:27:14
but flash not included. You have to manually install it.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:27:17
any suggestion on a file system
petn-randall 2017-02-28 02:27:21
stoned: If plugins need to be compiled in they wouldn't be called "plugins", would they? That's also not how it works in reality.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:27:42
petn-randall: read again what I said.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:27:48
you have misunderstood.
petn-randall 2017-02-28 02:28:47
"chromium needs to be compiled with flash and whatever widewine(netflix) plugins etc. only then can you drop ripped plugins from chrome into chromium."
petn-randall 2017-02-28 02:28:59
stoned: Is there another way to interpret that?
stoned 2017-02-28 02:29:04
You can read it for yourself just fine. No need to copy paste.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:29:35
For you, I'll go the extra mile, hang on.
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:29:45
I am installing totem now
Donquixote 2017-02-28 02:29:50
Hopefully it will work
stoned 2017-02-28 02:29:55
petn-randall: you don't compile the actual plugins. But the browsser needs to be compiled with the supprot for said plugins.
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:30:03
how do I fix tab-completion for mplayer?
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:30:12
they sent me here
stoned 2017-02-28 02:30:16
If the browser isn't compiled w/ said support, you can drop the ripped chrome plugins in it all day, they won't take effect.
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:30:23
saying that it is not a mplayer issue
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:30:31
but a bash-completion issue
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:31:03
just that you need to install it?
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:31:05

Achylles 2017-02-28 02:32:36

stoned 2017-02-28 02:32:49
petn-randall: no. I didn't even know about this.
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:33:06
other things bash completes, but mplayer...
themill 2017-02-28 02:33:08
Achylles: the bash-completion package tries to only complete filenames that mplayer can actually play
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:33:34
I know
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:33:43
tab completion works for known file times ONLY in some cases. and who uses mplayer? it's been forked many times. mplayer2, mpv, ... ... ...
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:34:19
Shadow_7: apparently no one hears you when you suggest mpv
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:34:21
but if I try to install mplayer2 it conflicts with mplayer
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 02:34:44
although mplayer is the last version that supports aalib and non caca ascii art
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:34:57
and I do not want to throw my skins away...
stoned 2017-02-28 02:37:31
petn-randall: I think a year ago or maybe 2 years ago I tried to use chromium and netflix/youtube wouldn't work. I was told I needed to copy the plugins from chrome's install to chromium. I did that, and it would not work. Then I discovered that you have to build chromium --with widevien and flash otherwise the binary plugins are not detected.
stoned 2017-02-28 02:38:03
petn-randall: it seems that now debian ships chromium w/ these compile time options, and now you can just copy the binary plugins and they are detected and workin chromium (it's what I hear now, from missmbob )
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:39:01

Achylles 2017-02-28 02:40:43

Achylles 2017-02-28 02:40:52
it is working now...

stoned 2017-02-28 02:41:15
And it uses rpm, it's not even for debian it seems
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 02:41:27
mpv works well , mostly, but ti does have some digital audio issues with DD and DTS , but that's on jessie and stretch ...i have a script that works on the audio part of the signal to decode 5.1 DD and DTS , but it's hit or miss depending whether it's EAC3 or AC3. The video is usually excellent however.
missmbob 2017-02-28 02:41:32
debian works just file to just extract an rpm. you dont keep the rpm or install it
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:41:36
but it is working...
stoned 2017-02-28 02:41:49
missmbob: I get it, but just noting
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:42:30
i did not install anything
Achylles 2017-02-28 02:43:24
