any xmonad user here using xmobar?
awal1 2017-02-23 04:49:08
how to prevent xmobar from launching another instance when restarting X in the fly (without log out)?
Wzup 2017-02-23 04:52:10
Hey guys. Is there any way to see maps / path of the folders threw the terminal? Working with only terminal here but I don't remember the path to a folder..
baum 2017-02-23 04:53:37
Wzup: maps?
baum 2017-02-23 04:53:50
Wzup: pwd
baum 2017-02-23 04:53:57
(for the path)
Wzup 2017-02-23 04:54:45
maps as in folders i meant. I used find it seemed to work
baum 2017-02-23 04:56:58
awal1: check what "pidof xmobar" returns
awal1 2017-02-23 04:58:28
baum, I'll do when I restart :P
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:02:46
Wzup: locate
ambient 2017-02-23 05:04:56
Hi, I tried out a kernel upgrade yesterday and saw that things like dual monitor settings could no longer be applied and at boot there were complains about 'unable to find microcode', could a newer kernel have those things applied and I missed a step or are those things reserved for stable debian kernels?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:05:29
!microcode
dpkg 2017-02-23 05:05:29
Microcode are instructions/structures for implementing high-level machine code within processors. The Linux kernel can load updated microcode on most x86 processors. Microcode patches for Intel and AMD64 CPUs are packaged for Debian as intel-microcode and amd64-microcode respectively; installing the relevant package is recommended to ensure system stability. Ask me about . http://wiki.debian.org/Microcode
ambient 2017-02-23 05:07:00
So it is just for stable, not newer kernels then
ambient 2017-02-23 05:07:07
Thankls jhutchins_wk
greycat 2017-02-23 05:10:06
Huh, how is this the first time I've ever heard of this microcode issue...
ambient 2017-02-23 05:10:57
greycat, I was referring to when I upgrade a kernel, certain things like being unable to set up my dual monitors and the complaint of a lack of microcode
ambient 2017-02-23 05:11:13
greycat, But those things are okay when I use the stable kernel provided
greycat 2017-02-23 05:11:50
I mean the larger issue as described on http://wiki.debian.org/Microcode
ambient 2017-02-23 05:12:27
greycat, You can get microcode for the 3.16 kernel, but not newer, on Debian. Apparently.
greycat 2017-02-23 05:12:46
good thing we're in #debian and not #debian-next then
ambient 2017-02-23 05:13:35
greycat, I am on newer hardware so I wanted to see if I could get some benefits, but some on this channel suggested I would not experience much of a difference
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:13:37
,v intel-microcode
judd 2017-02-23 05:13:38
Package: intel-microcode on amd64 -- wheezy/non-free: 1.20150121.1; jessie-backports/non-free: 3.20161104.1~bpo8+1; wheezy-backports/non-free: 3.20161104.1~deb8u1~bpo7+1; jessie/non-free: 3.20161104.1~deb8u1; sid/non-free: 3.20161104.1; stretch/non-free: 3.20161104.1
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:14:13
Looks like microcode is available for newer kernels in backports.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:14:28
jhutchins_wk, I have backports
tw 2017-02-23 05:14:41
ambient: It's extremely unlikely to be microcode related. I'd check to make sure all your kernel modules are available in your new kernel first.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:15:17
tw, So I have to change the kernel settings and recompile it?
tw 2017-02-23 05:16:38
Check your Xorg log to see if your DRM stuff loaded the same as it did on the older kernel, and figure out which kms driver you were using in the old kernel. Then make sure you've got the same driver in your new kernel.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:18:28
ambient: No.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:18:48
jhutchins_wk, Explain. No what?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:19:18
ambient: It should pull any kernel modules as dependencies, but you may need xorg modules/drivers updated as well. Search for your chipset and see what it requires.
newbie22 2017-02-23 05:19:38
do any of you guys know anything about virtualbox
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:19:41
ambient: If you're using something like the AMD drivers for a Radeon, you need to rebuild those against the new kernel.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:20:01
newbie22: Some of us know some things. What specific thing do you need?
ambient 2017-02-23 05:20:07
jhutchins_wk, How would I do that apart from the usual apt-get?
newbie22 2017-02-23 05:21:13
jhutchins_wk: well, I posted this question on #vbox, but no one seem to there. So here goes, do you know where I can find linux images to load and run under virtualbox ??
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:21:17
ambient: Have you manually installed drivers for your graphics card? Do you know what chipset it is? Do you know what drivers are available for it?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:21:32
newbie22: Google.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:21:49
jhutchins_wk, I had help on this channel for getting the microcode and proprietary stuff installed
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:21:56
newbie22: Probably something like "linux virtualbox image".
ambient 2017-02-23 05:21:57
for stable
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:22:46
ambient: You should probably take notes. You probably need to rebuild the proprietary drivers.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:23:02
I ran those same commands again, but I got the notice that I already have the latest and greatest
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:24:18
ambient: We don't know what hardware or drivers you have, we don't know what you've done before.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:26:04
jhutchins_wk, So upgrading the kernel is not so simple
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:27:02
ambient: When you add software from outside of the standard packaging/distribution system it complicates things.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:27:13
ambient: It goes very smoothly for me, but I've been at this a while.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:27:32
jhutchins_wk, The youtube videos make it look so 'one clicj, that was easy!'
ambient 2017-02-23 05:27:51
But I know in other distros updating the kernel is a major pain
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:28:12
ambient: You should try to understand what the commands you run are doing rather than just running them because someone on irc suggested them.
ambient 2017-02-23 05:28:39
jhutchins_wk, I will try not to ask on irc next time, thanks
Zewwy 2017-02-23 05:28:47
Has anyone ever used open source project; PWM?
ambient 2017-02-23 05:31:10
I was hoping for an 'apt-install-apply-goodies-used-in-older-kernel-to-the-newer-one'
tw 2017-02-23 05:33:08
If you installed the driver through a package that supported DKMS, it would. If you downloaded an external program that doesn't integrate with apt, there's no way for apt to know.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:33:33
ambient: Kernel modules have to be built against the new kernel. You still have the modules built for the old one, and you still have the source files, you just need to rebuild the module. The details of that vary depending on what you have, which you haven't told us.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:34:04
ambient: It's cool to ask on irc, and it's ok to follow the suggestions, but it's important to try to learn what the commands are doing.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 05:37:22
ambient: For most of these drivers there's a good on-line howto that helps understand what's happening.
