doubledutch: sure they are still there, but most the drivers are now kms, and i think you have to disable modesetting to get the traditional framebuffer drivers (though kms drivers emulate framebuffers) -- though maybe my understanding is a bit off.

SVGAtextmode was nice back in the day. Could change console resolution and fonts without having X.
