When you get random packages from random repositories, mix multiple releases of Debian, or mix Debian and derived distributions, you have a mess. There's no way anyone can support this "distribution of Frankenstein" and #debian certainly doesn't want to even try. See if you can convince ##linux to help.

In System Settings -> Multimedia, alsa is working but pulse is not when I hit the Test button. How can I get it working?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:17:57

tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:18:40

petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:19:02
tofutoon: on which DE?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:19:08
KDE
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:19:26
I have Gnome and XFCE installed as well. Should I test there?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:19:51
XFCE doesn't have pulse installed by default though.
petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:21:37
tofutoon: pulseaudio only works if your sound card isn't already blocked by another process. This is because many ALSA drivers (or the hardware itself) only support a single stream.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:23:56
petn-randall: On Ubuntu 14.04LTS, this soundcard worked flawlessly with multiple programs sending output. If I played videos in two different browsers, I would hear both.
petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:25:14
tofutoon: That's because it uses pulseaudio by default.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:25:38
petn-randall: That's good to know. Is there any way to configure things similarly on Debian?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:25:52
I'm happy to uninstall alsa.
petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:26:04
tofutoon: pulseaudio builds upon ALSA.
petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:26:19
tofutoon: It's usually enough to install pulseaudio and reboot.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:26:56
That simple? apt-get install pulseaudio and reboot?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:27:16
I'll give that a shot.
userro 2017-02-25 08:32:13
I think I enable testing repo for for all packages, everything will be on latest version, right?
userro 2017-02-25 08:34:43
then there will be no dependency problems
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:34:43
userro: yes. full upgrade to stretch is probably your best bet
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:34:43
assuming you can
baum 2017-02-25 08:34:43
uhm, what happens with the packegs deprecated in stretch?
petn-randall 2017-02-25 08:35:13
baum: which one do you mean specifically?
userro 2017-02-25 08:36:20
missmbob, now do you have 6.3 version of gcc?
userro 2017-02-25 08:36:51
in stretch
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:36:51
yes
userro 2017-02-25 08:36:51
ok
nkuttler 2017-02-25 08:36:53
userro: you probably want stretch, not testing in your sources
userro 2017-02-25 08:37:00
so I shouldn't have problems with installing it then :)
baum 2017-02-25 08:37:12
petn-randall: e.g. libgstreamer0.10-0 (assume it's installed and one upgrades to stretch)
userro 2017-02-25 08:37:28
ok
tofutoon 2017-02-25 08:37:30
petn-randall: After installing pulseaudio (0 packages installed) and rebooting, alsa and pulseaudio disappeared from the option list. The audio playback options are 'Built in Audio Analog Services' (greyed out) and Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (HDMI) (doesn't work). Any idea what's happening here?
userro 2017-02-25 08:38:08
how do I install stretch packages?
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:38:27
did you remove your pinning?
userro 2017-02-25 08:38:36
no
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:38:41
do it
userro 2017-02-25 08:38:45
ok
TomTomTo1 2017-02-25 08:39:01
baum: it stays around if it has been manually installed and there is no upgrade candidate and if it doesn't conflict, or gets removed during dist-upgrade.
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:39:11
userro: after that do this:

missmbob 2017-02-25 08:39:34
c'mon dpkg

missmbob 2017-02-25 08:40:13

userro 2017-02-25 08:40:21
should I put in a file like before?
baum 2017-02-25 08:40:22
TomTomTo1: in this case libgstreamer1 wouldn't qualify as an update right?
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:40:58
userro: delete the file. edit /etc/apt/sources.list replace jessie with stretch. then update and dist-upgrade
userro 2017-02-25 08:41:13
ah got it
TomTomTo1 2017-02-25 08:41:32
baum: it's a different package, so no. but it's unlikely that libgstreamer0.10 is marked as manually installed on your system.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 08:41:33
What if it has stable instead of jessie?
nkuttler 2017-02-25 08:42:24
Shadow_7: at some point it can become a mess unless you pay attention
missmbob 2017-02-25 08:42:24
debian installer doesnt user stable. it uses codenames
baum 2017-02-25 08:42:24
TomTomTo1: yes, just asked to make sure i got things right - thanks
