#debian channel featuring petn-randall, tofutoon1, x42, missmbob, jhutchins, John__,

x42 2017-02-25 09:46:26
I don't find any problems in kernel.log about the network. Only this firmware bug - which does not seem to be related: http://pastebin.com/CGiZ2QBa
petn-randall 2017-02-25 09:47:15
x42: In this case, what problem do you see with the stock driver?
x42 2017-02-25 09:48:01
If i try to ifup eth0 i get the message "Cannot find device eth0"
x42 2017-02-25 09:48:25
even thought lspci -k shows the correct driver
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:49:47
could it be it's just not called eth0?
x42 2017-02-25 09:49:53
this is strange: http://pastebin.com/fBRVx9AB
x42 2017-02-25 09:50:06
udevd renames it to eth2
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:50:09
i have several servers with e1000e with no problem
x42 2017-02-25 09:50:33
currently i'm using a usb <-> ethernet adapter as eth1
x42 2017-02-25 09:53:02
should i try to reinstall the kernel module?
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:53:32
*shrug* i've just used stock
x42 2017-02-25 09:53:53
you mean you compiled the intel driver?
x42 2017-02-25 09:54:07
from intel?
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:54:15
no
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:54:23
debian's kernel
x42 2017-02-25 09:54:35
> 3.5?
missmbob 2017-02-25 09:55:11
3.16
x42 2017-02-25 09:55:16
ok
tofutoon1 2017-02-25 10:02:21
I'm getting the error 'E: The method driver /usr/lib/apt/methods/https// could not be found.' Installing 'apt-transport-https' does not resolve the problem.
tofutoon1 2017-02-25 10:02:43
I'm getting this error when running 'apt-get update'.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 10:07:31
tofutoon1: perhaps missing a : in the sources.list? https// vs. https://
tofutoon1 2017-02-25 10:10:27
Shadow_7: Brilliant. One of the repos was https//:deb...
petn-randall 2017-02-25 10:10:48
x42: Your problem is not a driver issue. For 'ifup eth0' to work you need to have an interface defined as such in /etc/network/interfaces.
tofutoon1 2017-02-25 10:11:03
Shadow_7: Thanks
x42 2017-02-25 10:12:16
petn-randall: http://pastebin.com/iC70JpCb
x42 2017-02-25 10:12:53
it is defined
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:19:35
GO UTEXAS! Full DVD ISO in two minutes!
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:21:50
It'll take longer than that to burn it.
missmbob 2017-02-25 10:24:20
jhutchins: wrong channel? :P
phogg 2017-02-25 10:25:33
jhutchins: that's a fat pipe
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:26:01
Yeah, I'm used to much slower downloads for OS ISOs.
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:28:04
missmbob: Picking a mirror is such a crapshoot, especially for isos.
missmbob 2017-02-25 10:28:52
jhutchins: oh. i actually thought you were talking about some stupid college sporting event
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:29:59
Nope. Debian installer download. Preparing for my first modern UEFI install. Going well so far.
John__ 2017-02-25 10:42:49
anyone here a driver specialist? more on the hardware side of things, rather than os internals. datasheets, device-controllers and microcode.
John__ 2017-02-25 10:43:07
I know it's the wrong place so I'd appreciate if someone actually tells me what #channel to head to
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:43:17
John__: What's your actual question?
John__ 2017-02-25 10:43:18
because I've searched quite well on freenode and couldn't find much.
John__ 2017-02-25 10:44:04
jhutchins, it's related to the device controller on certain devices and binary firmware. if a device only accepts microcode, how exactly can one write a driver for such a device/hardware?
John__ 2017-02-25 10:44:29
the datasheet isn't exactly published by the manufacturer
John__ 2017-02-25 10:44:35
so I more or less have a black box system.
petn-randall 2017-02-25 10:45:04
x42: If your interface is called eth2, you have to adjust that config file accordingly.
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:45:57
John__: It's usually possible to pull the firmware out of the Windows drivers and write a driver that will load and use that.
jhutchins 2017-02-25 10:45:57
!firmware
dpkg 2017-02-25 10:45:57
Firmware is software to operate electronic devices, usually contained in EPROM or flash memory. Some Linux kernel drivers require firmware to be provided from userspace, notably for devices. Most firmware files are not part of a Debian release as they do not conform to the ; some are available via and packages, ask me about . See also . http://wiki.debian.org/Firmware
