tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:52:28
Shadow_7: I never would have diagnosed those issues without your guidance.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:52:59
Shadow_7: So, I definitely appreciate your help.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:53:19
no problem. audio is about the only thing I do well these days
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:54:05
But, you do it really well. You knew a lot of the ins and outs. It's also incredibly difficult to help someone when you're not at the computer.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:54:43
It takes another level of mastery to do that.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:55:40
But I am at the computer. My computer
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:56:12
running debian with pulse over jackd
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:56:41
I meant... It's easier to fix a problem at your own computer than to fix it remotely.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:56:41
well in your case, a faster fix might have been a fresh install. microsoft 101
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:56:41
A fresh install of what?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:56:41
pulseaudio?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:56:41
the whole distro... to erase your previous fiddling
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:56:41
And any upgrade paths
CrazyTux 2017-02-25 17:58:21
hello, what advantage does Debian have over Fedora or Fedora based distros?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:58:21
Well... here's what I did. I did a fresh install of Debian. Then, I took the home/myuser folder of my previous Ubuntu install and copied it over. However, I replaced the .config dir with the one from the Debian install.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:58:21
Most of my installs are minimal so a reinstall with fresh all is often less than an hour. And 10GB less cruft on my install
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:58:21
Mainly, I wanted my old data.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:58:24
But, what about your data?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:59:01
And, I did this Fresh install about a week ago.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:59:13
Took me almost a whole day to set everything up.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 17:59:23
The last remaining issue was sound.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 17:59:23
CrazyTux: xinput allows the changing of enable 3 button mouse emulation. service --status-all works in debian. And a couple other annoyances I had with fedora 23
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:00:33
tofutoon: I do my fresh install to fresh usb sticks. The old sticks still exist
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:00:33
They're less than $10-ish now and 32GB-ish and fast-ish now too
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:00:44
well, almost less than $10
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:00:59
Interesting. I use a lot of space though.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:01:13
tofutoon: that's what external drives are for and mount
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:01:15
My home dir was almost 130 gb.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:01:35
Yah, I should move away from one / partition.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:01:56
I should do a a separate /home partition.
CrazyTux 2017-02-25 18:02:06
Do Debian live CDs work now?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:02:07
The main girth of my installs these days is the cache of a game. 11GB now. My installs are typically 6GB once bloated up
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:02:33
I see
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:02:48
Let me try rebooting.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:02:59
and see if pulseaudio works as it should.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:03:03
tofutoon: also, I'll create a new user and move the old user /home to an external drive if I want to keep going on an old install.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:03:25
Makes sense
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:03:42
tofutoon: although with todays fast past exploit lists, I feel safer going fresh at least every 3 months
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:03:53
pace*
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:04:26
That makes sense.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:04:50
Do you work in the security space?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:05:31
Seldom have I encountered exploits... but some people I know got hit with ransomware.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:09:10
I guess the Debian Security team is pushing patches for security exploits all the time.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 18:09:20
Need to reboot. I'll be back.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:21:06
tofutoon: made it back I see. No, don't work in the security space. Just noticed a few oddities in my own systems despite being linux over the years. Like once I half installed the fglrx drivers and I was bleading out packets on port 53 (dns) at about 1/3rd dial-up speed.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:22:26
I traced it back to atieventfd for sending the packets. And some extra entry that showed up in xauth. A very odd extra entry. Speedometer helped me realize what was going on so I could start killing things until it stopped. atievenfd won that contest.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:23:43
I just start getting a little paranoid when I start seeing packets that resolve back to akamai
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 18:24:59
especially when you're behind a nat'd router and not actively using anything network related.
vita_cell 2017-02-25 18:26:57
guys, is there some Debian dedicated IRC channer for Debian-powerpc64?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 19:00:03
Shadow_7: That's interesting. Sadly, I don't pay enough attention to observe things on that level.
shalok 2017-02-25 19:40:55
In `sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata`, what's the difference between 'UTC' and 'Universal' time?
shalok 2017-02-25 19:41:34
Both in the 'None of the above' geographic area.
