so, if stretch is frozen, when it becomes the new stable, will everyone on stretch be stable, or bumped to "testing"
skrite 2017-02-23 09:45:43
?
missmbob 2017-02-23 09:46:09
skrite: if you have stretch in your sources.list you'll stay stable
crash_ 2017-02-23 09:46:15
if you have testing now then you will continue on the next testing branch when stretch is released
crash_ 2017-02-23 09:46:25
"testing" in sources.list i mean
missmbob 2017-02-23 09:46:29
skrite: dont use testing. use stretch
greycat 2017-02-23 09:46:31
What crash means if if you have the actual word "testing"
greycat 2017-02-23 09:46:51
MOST people should use the code words, "jessie" or "stretch" to avoid surprises.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:49:51
Good evening. Open GL is not functioning in my computer, I believe, because my Radeon Graphics Card isn't being used.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:50:03
This is the result of the "lspci -v" command: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/18f7b232/
thyriaen 2017-02-23 09:50:04
hi, i am looking for a way to get chrome ( and/or chromium ) to send notifications with libnotify instead of the chrome buildin nnotification so it gets better integrated into your desktop - is there a way ?
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:50:22
This is the result of the "lspci -v" command: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/18f7b232/
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:50:45
Sorry for the repeated message.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:51:05
I meant to say that, as it can be seen, there is no "Kernel driver in use" for the Radeon R7
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:51:19
I used to have the testing version of xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:7.8.0-1 and xserver-xorg-video-ati 1:7.8.0-1 installed, and it would work.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:51:31
But this is a new install, literally one of the first things I'm doing with this new system, I picked up the version available in backports, and dowloaded the firmware-amd-graphics as well as suggested by the package.
towo` 2017-02-23 09:51:35
Diogenes_, you have to install firmware-linux-nonfree
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:51:53
Oh, I see.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:52:02
Let me check.
towo` 2017-02-23 09:52:20
and if it is not working, Xorg.0.log and the output of dmesg | grep -i firmw would be usefull
towo` 2017-02-23 09:52:45
and maybe you need kernel and firmware-amd-graphics from backports
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:54:20
Oh, ok, give me a second. But you were right, I didn't have firmware-linux-nonfree installed.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:57:54
Ok, installed.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 09:58:17
Should I try to load the driver? Or reboot?
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:03:37
By the by, contents of Xorg.0.log: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/3d3de9f7/ and contents of dmesg: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/30844da7/
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:05:29
Be right back.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:07:35
That would appear to be using an Intel graphics driver.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:12:31
Back.
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:12:52
Installing linux-firmware-nonfree had no effect.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:13:06
Diogenes_: You appear to be running an intel video driver.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:13:25
Diogenes_: lspci -nn | grep VGA
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:14:18
Yes, a "00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics [8086:1616] (rev 09)"

[8086:1616] is 'HD Graphics 5500' from 'Intel Corporation' with kernel modules 'ata_generic', 'snd-hda-intel' in jessie. See also http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/index.rhtmlx?check=1&lspci=8086:1616

towo` 2017-02-23 10:15:00
Diogenes_, provide Xorg.0.log
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:15:10
towo`: Posted above.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:15:27
towo`: Both.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:15:45
ah, hybrid graphics

jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:16:15
Diogenes_: Do you also get a second VGA line?
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:16:48
I don't know that. How could i check?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:17:13
Diogenes_: When you do lspci -nn | grep VGA, do you get more than one line?
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:17:54
As of now, no, a single line.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:17:57
Diogenes_: A hybrid graphics system has two VGA chipsets, usually Intel for low power consumption and something like Radeon for high performance.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:19:08
Diogenes_: Ok, so you don't have hybrid graphics.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:19:19
Diogenes_: You don't have a Radeon.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:19:19

jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:19:43
towo`: Interesting, I wonder why it doesn't show up in lspci then.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:19:44
and btw, the 3.16 kernel is way to old for intel broadwell
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:19:51
!hybrid graphics
towo` 2017-02-23 10:20:10
jhutchins_wk, because of lspci | egrep -i "vga|3d|display"
towo` 2017-02-23 10:20:17
then it will show
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:20:17
This is my Radeon, as shown in lspci: https://paste.debian.net/hidden/6b3aed8b/
towo` 2017-02-23 10:20:25
it's not a vga adapter

and again

!bumblebee
dpkg 2017-02-23 10:21:09
The Bumblebee project aims to provide support for the Nvidia Optimus GPU switching technology on Linux systems. GeForce 400M (4xxM) and later mobile GPU series are Optimus-enabled; if «lspci -nn | grep '\''[030[02]\]'» returns two lines, the laptop likely uses Optimus. Packaged for Debian and . http://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee http://bumblebee-project.org/ #bumblebee on irc.freenode.net.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:21:13
no!
towo` 2017-02-23 10:21:22
thats not a nvidia system
towo` 2017-02-23 10:21:36
intel / Radeon is working with dri offloading
towo` 2017-02-23 10:21:52
but it needs a recent kernel and graphics stack
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:22:03
https://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo#Hybrid_Graphics
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-23 10:22:19
I always get ATI and Nvidia mixed up. Sorry for the confusion.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:22:25
i would go with jessie
towo` 2017-02-23 10:22:31
grr
towo` 2017-02-23 10:22:35
go with stretch
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:22:49
I could update to linux 4.9 in backports.
towo` 2017-02-23 10:22:51
hopefully intel and ati ddx is dri3 enabled
towo` 2017-02-23 10:23:06
then dri offloading is easy to use
towo` 2017-02-23 10:23:14
with dri2 only it's a mess
Diogenes_ 2017-02-23 10:24:01
Should I update my system to stretch?
skrite 2017-02-23 10:26:12
ok another question about versions. If I wanted to stay on a testing branch, after stretch is made stable, would it be best to just re-install instead of changing my sourses.list to reflect whatever the new testing branch will be?
skrite 2017-02-23 10:26:52
i guess i am asking if there is a way to make the "testing" branch a rolling release ?
missmbob 2017-02-23 10:27:01
skrite: no reinstall needed
skrite 2017-02-23 10:27:14
gotcha, missmbob, thanks
skrite 2017-02-23 10:27:33
just change the sources.list and update, dist-upgrade thing?
missmbob 2017-02-23 10:27:37
skrite: shortly after replease testing will be proper shit for a while, though. give it time before going to testing if you want
missmbob 2017-02-23 10:27:47
skrite: yeah
skrite 2017-02-23 10:28:04
oh, ok. so give it a couple of months?
missmbob 2017-02-23 10:28:42
skrite: at least a month is good
skrite 2017-02-23 10:28:55
10-4, thanks
ws2k3 2017-02-23 10:29:34
is it possible to hide processe from other users in linux?
ws2k3 2017-02-23 10:29:46
so they dont show up in ps aux ?
