I meant unstable to testing no one knows what tools are used to maintain the debian repositories?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:49:36
nickgaw: I'm sure the maintainers know.
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:49:54
for example how do new distributions who wish to base their destribution on debian do this?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:50:15
nickgaw: They start out with a mirror.
jelly 2017-02-22 08:50:36
source* mirror. and set up buildd's for building

it has been said that buildd is Debian's automated build system that automatically compiles everything it finds. http://buildd.debian.org/ http://wiki.debian.org/buildd
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:51:35
I have read somewhere about automated tools that handle bug tracking and moving packages from unstable to testing no one knows what these tools are?
somiaj 2017-02-22 08:51:36
nickgaw: what part of the internals are you wanting? You wanting the tools that build the package, or the transition. Transition doens't rebuild packages (usually
somiaj 2017-02-22 08:52:05
nickgaw: #debian-mentors on irc.oftc.net might have better answers, also have you seen the package tracker? The tools are linked to that

nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:52:47
I will have a look
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:53:44
Does debian or any dealers sell laptops or desktops preinstalled with debian on them?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:54:01
nickgaw: Debian does not.
netzverweigerer 2017-02-22 08:54:02
nickgaw: not that i know of.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:54:31
nickgaw: I think there are some small retailers that will pre-install it for you.
somiaj 2017-02-22 08:54:36
nickgaw: closest I've seen is computers sold with ubuntu on it, which means it most likely can run debian.
netzverweigerer 2017-02-22 08:54:39
nickgaw: i've seen laptops with ubuntu flavors being sold, but i don't know of anything with pre-installed debian.

somiaj: ^5
somiaj 2017-02-22 08:54:53
nickgaw: well in terms of big compienes, I'm sure some small company will install debian if asked.
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:54:56
My linux laptop has been telling me a lot core temperature above threshold and I am not sure what portion of the system to have someone take a look at?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:55:26
nickgaw: Probably not real current: https://www.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed
somiaj 2017-02-22 08:55:27
nickgaw: ventalation of laptops can be a big factor, where you set it, make sure the fans are clean and not gettnig gunked up.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:56:29
nickgaw: Not Debian specific: https://www.cyberciti.biz/hardware/laptop-computers-with-linux-installed-or-preloaded/
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:56:43
now a days can a linux system get so hot it is automatically shutdown by the kernel?
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:57:02
nickgaw: More often by the bios, but yes.
missmbob 2017-02-22 08:57:06
nickgaw: yes
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 08:57:21
nickgaw: Cleaning the dust out of the cooling system often helps.
nickgaw 2017-02-22 08:58:18
How much would a normal store like best buy charge to clean up the system and if heatsyncs need replacing do everything to cool down the system?
missmbob 2017-02-22 08:59:27
nickgaw: those stores are run by 18 year olds. i'd be surprised if they opened your box

netzverweigerer 2017-02-22 08:59:43
nickgaw: it really depends. if you still have warranty on your thinkpad they will do what's needed to get your system running cool again. that's all i really know.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 09:00:06
nickgaw: I can't imagine replacing a heatsink.
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:00:18
jhutchins_wk: why? i've had to several times
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 09:00:34
missmbob: Replace it, or fix the thermal paste?
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:00:51
jhutchins_wk: replace
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 09:01:11
missmbob: Something like a badly clogged laptop heatsink?
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:01:37
jhutchins_wk: a lot of heatsinks, yes most laptops, have the heatsink fused with the cpu fan
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:01:37
I don't see heatsinks going bad, though it might be easier to replace the whole thing with a nicer designed one than just cleaning it up and replacing the thermal paste
nickgaw 2017-02-22 09:02:13
My system I bought off of a friend who did not really take good care of it so it is not under any protection plan but other then the over heating messages the system works just fine I just want to get it cooler if possible to avoid those messages.
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:02:50
nickgaw: yeah. clean it up. if that doesnt work replace the fan and it should go away
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:03:11
nickgaw: get some sort of platform to rest it on so it gets airflow under the laptop can help a lot, also just clean it out as best as you can. I just use an air compressor, though some like the cans of cleaner better.
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 09:03:17
nickgaw: Sorry for not trimming the URL better, but just get a can of air ($3.99 above), blow backwards from the exhaust, take off covers if you can.
jelly 2017-02-22 09:04:07
if it's older than 4-5 years it will be worth to let someone open it, clean it properly, reapply thermal paste possibly
nickgaw 2017-02-22 09:04:19
ok the system is currently directly on a desk and I think the fans are under the system.
ambient 2017-02-22 09:04:21
Hello, I am currently running Jessie Stable, but want to upgrade my kernel. Is it too much of a pain to bother?
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:04:50

jelly, I have newish hardware so would like to take advantage
ambient 2017-02-22 09:05:43
I heard later kernels have better amd apu support, perhaps that is not so?
ambient 2017-02-22 09:06:41
Perhaps it is all just false marketing from linux, the old kernels may be just as good as the new...
ambient 2017-02-22 09:07:26
missmbob, what command to use to upgrade the kernel?
nickgaw 2017-02-22 09:07:47
Why do things lots of the time remain in the staging area of the kernel source for years and never move out of there or features never get finished like the native ntfs kernel write driver?
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:08:36
ambient: read the instructions. https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ set up your sources properly for backports. apt update && apt install -t jessie-backports linux-image-amd64 for example
jhutchins_wk 2017-02-22 09:09:42
ambient: Might be a good idea to look at the changelogs.
ambient 2017-02-22 09:09:57
missmbob, any post install work you have to do, like reconfigure the boot loader and such?
missmbob 2017-02-22 09:10:05
ambient: no
ambient 2017-02-22 09:10:11
: - )
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:11:04
ambient: that should all be done by the post install scripts of the kernel package.
jelly 2017-02-22 09:11:47
ambient: typically, to take advantage of newer hardware, more than just the kernel may need to be upgraded
ambient 2017-02-22 09:12:15
jelly, So you think it will be a bit of a cluster duck?
jelly 2017-02-22 09:12:36
if your hardware needs any non-free firmware (eg. for wifi, or GPU video acceleration, or something), that may need upgrading
jelly 2017-02-22 09:12:39
as well.
jelly 2017-02-22 09:12:59
ambient: I don't think anything, I'm clueless about amd cpu or gpu.
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:13:01
well what advantanges do you want, a gpu sounds like xorg and gl stuff. So you may need firmware and even the newer mesa from jessie-backports for openGL.
ambient 2017-02-22 09:13:23
jelly, I have an AMD apu and gpu, it sucks under linux
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:13:32
but even then, you won't get the amdgpu driver in jessie, so you'll have to stick with the radeon driver.
jelly 2017-02-22 09:13:52
ambient: but if 3d and video and graphic mode setting already works for you, then you probably won't notice things working better with a newer kernel
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:14:23
ambient: A newer kernel might help, but in jessie the linux-firmware-nonfree and the radeon driver is about the best you can do, or use fglrx. If your card is so new it needs amdgpu support, this isn't in jessie afiak.
ambient 2017-02-22 09:18:33
somiaj, It's an a10-7800 apu with an r7-240 graphics card
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:19:18
ambient: I'm not that familar with the amd cards, but if the radeon driver doesn't work with a newer kernel, you may just need to use stretch to get decent support for that. Stretch as the amdgpu driver for the newer cards
jelly 2017-02-22 09:19:19
ambient: what does the "lspci -nn" line for the gpu say, exactly?
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:19:33
I don't know what cards need the amdgpu driver and what can run just fine with the radeon driver
jelly 2017-02-22 09:20:08
and even stretch kernel is missing build-time options for some amdgpu generations
ambient 2017-02-22 09:20:20
jelly, http://pastebin.com/Cjz426ec
somiaj 2017-02-22 09:20:34
and if you want the amdgpu pro driver, then well not offically supported in debian (though possible to get)
jelly 2017-02-22 09:20:54

somiaj 2017-02-22 09:36:14
