#debian channel featuring coreutil, tofutoon, Shadow_7,

tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:48:43
Shadow_7: I tried settting the Mic at 72 and the Auto Gain Control at MM.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:49:04
That still didn't allow the mic to work.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:49:27
Is there a way to test if the problem here is Alsa or Pulse audio?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:52:06
tofutoon: audacity and select the input in preferences
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:52:35
tofutoon: otherwise arecord has a monitor mode that shows levels
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:53:20
tofutoon: audacity is probably better because you can adjust gain to see if there is a very soft signal
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:53:59
tofutoon: could be a button on the mic depending on what mic. pc power or phantom or whatever some mics need.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:57:50
tofutoon: seems like a standard mic, should just need to select the input.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:58:23
Shadow_7: I'm not seeing any signal in audacity.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:58:34
Shadow_7: I tested the on/off switch of the mic.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:59:30
tofutoon: did you effect -> amplify ?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:01:03
I tried amplify. All I hear is white noise.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:01:08
tofutoon: arecord -V stereo -D hw:1 test.wav
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:01:42
tofutoon: with ^C to kill it. Should have a meter that moves if it has signal
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:03:19
https://dpaste.de/oaZQ/raw
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:03:43
There's no moving meter.
coreutil 2017-02-25 16:04:10
why does debian have firefox esr and not the common firefox?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:04:35
tofutoon: arecord -D hw:1 -c 1 -r 48000 -V mono test.wav
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:05:29
https://dpaste.de/NNOm/raw
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:06:52
tofutoon: add -f S16_LE
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:06:58
although not sure why that's not the default.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:08:43
Shadow_7: That now records.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:08:54
However, it is stuck at 0%.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:09:04
Indicating there is no signal. Right?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:09:27
tofutoon: otherwise the /dev/snd/pcm1c type things are the "c"apture device. Or indicating that the level is too low to register
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:09:39
tofutoon: might also try -r 44100
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:10:32
It's still stuck at 0% indicating no signal.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:12:02
Actually, we have both a -r 48000 and a -r 44100
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:13:10
tofutoon: ofc... 48000 is normally video bitrate and 44100 is cd bitrate
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:13:16
I see. Do we need both?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:13:21
tofutoon: yes and no... Less cpu usage for 44100 for synth stuff since sound samples tend to be ripped from CDs.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:13:34
I see
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:14:20
early version of pulseaudio were locked at 48000 and otherwise went full skynet on your if you didn't use that rate.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:14:24
Also, pulse audio's volume control shows no input devices.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:14:55
tofutoon: is the most right tab having it disabled?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:15:17
tofutoon: might need to unplug and replug it hotswap style to bring it to life
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:15:22
The Profile says Off.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:15:36
turn it on then... :)
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:16:18
(and prepare to lose your high end frequencies from feedback)
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:16:31
It is on (I believe).
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:16:57
There is a light on the audio card, and the microphone itself has a button that I turned on.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:18:53
tofutoon: cat /proc/asound/pcm
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:19:37
tofutoon: it might be special like hw:1,2 and needs to be explicitly named
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:19:54
https://dpaste.de/SH8t/raw
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:19:57
typically hw:1,0 is playback
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:21:16
Is it not on my machine?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:22:06
The cat /proc/asound/pcm command doesn't change depending on whether the mic is on/off.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:22:15
tofutoon: it shows hw:1,0 as your input / capture
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:22:29
aka 01-00
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:22:50
I see. And, it shows 00-03 as the playback.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:23:04
tofutoon: that's likely the HDMI audio out
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:23:19
tofutoon: egrep -r -i hdmi /proc/asound/*
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:23:27
don't need to see that output
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:23:48
the .../card0/pcm3p... == hw:0,3
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:24:08
where the ending p is playback
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:24:51
Yes 00-03 is the HDMI
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:24:57
playback
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:26:00
Also, egrep -r -i hdmi /proc/asound/* does not show the capture device.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:26:12
Oh... but it isn't hdmi
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:27:17
https://dpaste.de/ATSV/raw
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:27:33
That's the output of egrep -r -i capture /proc/asound/*
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:28:57
tofutoon: that's an odd one... name="Mic Capture Switch" ...perhaps there's a push to speak button???
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:30:12
There's an on/off on the mic.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:30:21
Let me change the position and rerun.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:30:51
tofutoon: probably need to amixer that and check. $ amixer -c 1 | less
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:31:27
The on/off doesn't change anything.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:32:12
https://dpaste.de/e0kY/raw
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:34:23
tofutoon: Mono: Capture 78 [100%] [20.00dB] [off]
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:35:18
tofutoon: note the [off]...
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:35:37
No matter what position the on/off switch is in, the mic does not work.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:35:47
Should I test the mic on another computer?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:35:49
tofutoon: software setting... aka muted?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:36:17
Where?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:37:28
http://pasteboard.co/
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:37:35
tofutoon: amixer -c 1 sset Capture 78 unmute
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:38:16
not so sure about that command, but meh
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:38:44
https://dpaste.de/05gx/raw
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:38:47
tofutoon: maybe one of the other mixer apps can dumb it down. gmix, kmix, ... ... ...
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:39:27
After our pulseaudio configuration, none of the mixers show any output.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:39:30
in theory pavucontrol handles it though. fiddle???
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:40:33
The Profile says Off for the AK5370 I/F A/D Converter.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:40:36
it all appears to be there and works (driver wise). Just need it on and leveled to a usable state
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:43:31
Shadow_7: With the manual pulseaudio config, all the KDE configuration tools stopped working.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:43:58
Audio and Video Settings - System Settings simply says 'PulseAudio Sound Server'.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:44:43
Also, the .config/pulseaudio folder is not being regenerated.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 16:44:53
~/.config/pulseaudio folder
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 16:45:08
tofutoon: a reboot will likely get it back to a usable state. or restart X (control + alt + backspace), which isn't always enabled these days
