tofutoon 2017-02-25 13:52:10
Shadow_7: It's a $600 laptop from 2011, and a $60 microphone sound card from like 2007.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 13:52:47
I have an m-audio delta 44, and an m-audio mobile pre. Otherwise the same old boring hda-intel that everything has now
tofutoon 2017-02-25 13:53:27
Does the speaker-test suggest everything is working?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 13:54:02
did you hear pink noise on left speaker then right ( -c 2 )
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:04:09
This is the copied over .asoundrc https://dpaste.de/gZzn/raw
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:04:20
It's using pulse
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:04:54
tofutoon: does pavucontrol give you options?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:05:54
In Configuration, there is Built-in Audio and AK5370 I/F A/D Converter. The latter only has the choice Profile: Off. The former has the choices:
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:07:17
tofutoon: mostly the last tab on pavucontrol and disable anything you are not using. And on playback unmute make default, and adjust levels for that which you are using.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:07:56
Analog Stereo Output, Analog Stereo Duplex, Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output, Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input, Analog Suround 4.0 Output, Analog Suround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input, Analog Suround 4.0 Output, Analog Stereo Input, and Off
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:08:22
Built-in Audio is set to Analog Stereo Output
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:08:44
There are 8 choices total including off.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:09:21
tofutoon: mostly master unmuted and up, and PCM unmuted and up to hear sound
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:09:21
AK5370 I/F A/D Converter only has choice off. My microphone is plugged into this card.
jhutchins 2017-02-25 14:09:37
Shadow_7: It looked like the installer attempted to install grub-efi and failed. Obviously it installed enogh that it loads the grub prompt, but if I pick Debian in the EfI menu it goes straight to the prompt. Fortunately, I can trigger the EFI menu, and if I choose Windows it starts defaulting to that.
jhutchins 2017-02-25 14:10:04
This is the kind of thing the old non-graphical bootloaders were meant to avoid.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:10:11
Shadow_7: What do you mean by master unmuted and up, and PCM unmuted and up to hear sound?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:11:06
tofutoon: should be furthest left channel in alsamixer
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:18:30
tofutoon: or is all your speakers on the headphone out jack? not line out or other?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:19:07
The laptop has speakers, and I have an ordinary headset plugged in. The monitor does not have speakers.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:19:50
tofutoon: and you're using the headset? having it plugged it will mute the speakers and such depending on hardware.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:20:34
Right
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:20:44
I have the headset plugged in.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:20:54
I unmuted those options. Thanks. Let me try it.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:23:43
Plugging in the headphones causes Speaker and S/PDIF to be MM. http://pasteboard.co/CNuYUZyHe.png
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:24:00
With that setting, I still have no audio.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:24:47
S/PDIF is the digital audio output (optical?)
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:24:57
I don't know.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:25:07
Do the headphones work?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:25:11
No
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:25:22
Yes, the headphones work.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:25:31
I hear system sounds.
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:26:18
And, they worked earlier today with audio.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:26:55
tofutoon: odd that it shows up as intel cougar HDMI. lspci -nnk
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:27:24
Just curious what the vender:device hex numbers are
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:27:47
could be usb based... so... lsusb
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:28:24
that [ffff:ffff] number is good for google-ing
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:42:20
No .pulse
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:42:32
tofutoon: .config or any .??? 's
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:42:43
No
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:43:16
tofutoon: if $(pgrep pulseaudio) returns a number/pid, kill them
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:43:35
tofutoon: ideally with $ pulseaudio --kill
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:43:57
{17:43}/usr ➭ $(pgrep pulseaudio)
tofutoon 2017-02-25 14:43:57
zsh: command not found: 1213
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:44:10
tofutoon: but doesn't always work. otherwise reboot... might also want to rm the .config/pulse or .pulse/ stuff in ~/
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:44:26
tofutoon: the $() is decorative in that case
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 14:44:48
tofutoon: a modern bash-ish for the `` of old
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:04:13
tofutoon: but good that they're running. so don't need to check /var/log/ stuff for why it wasn't running.
userro 2017-02-25 15:05:20
wow finally it worked I'm so happy
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:05:28
tofutoon: once pgrep returns no pids, $ pulseaudio --start
userro 2017-02-25 15:05:44
thank you for helping me
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:10:08
coreutill: iceweasel is available and is basically unbranded firefox
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:10:13
Shadow: No. It doesn't
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:10:29
Shadow_7: I removed my headset.
missmbob 2017-02-25 15:10:42
coreutill: https://mozilla.debian.net/
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:10:46
tofutoon: and pavucontrol shows default, unmuted, and all the level-ee stuff?
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:10:50
Shadow_7: Just wanted to remove another variable and just use the laptop speakers.
bibble 2017-02-25 15:11:05
coreutill: also can just dl the latest tar.gz from website
coreutill 2017-02-25 15:11:20
Shadow_7, missmbob, thank you!
coreutill 2017-02-25 15:11:40
and icedove is unbranded thunderbird, as it seems? their use is identical?
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:11:45
tofutoon: now that you have it enabled... pulseaudio --kill... and speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:0
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:11:48
Shadow_7: Built-in Audio defaults to Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output. The HDMI monitor does not have audio.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:12:31
tofutoon: speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:0,0 (should go to speakers)
tofutoon 2017-02-25 15:14:27
No sound output.
Shadow_7 2017-02-25 15:42:12
tofutoon: I would turn off agc myself... and mic at about 70%
