JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:46:31
hello
JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:48:12
If I install debian, everything already on this drive goes away, yes?
nkuttler 2017-02-27 23:48:43
JayCoyote: depends on how you partition the disk
nkuttler 2017-02-27 23:48:50
JayCoyote: but assuming yes is a safe bet
JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:49:20
'kay. Last time I partitioned a disk was . . . 2005.
ausinch 2017-02-27 23:49:29
jelly Shadow_7: Hmm UUID of /boot is the same as it was a month ago - I will boot and monitor console. Thanks again (y)
JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:50:20
thnak you nkuttler
borsin 2017-02-27 23:50:28
JayCoyote: if it's a windows partition you'll probably want to back that up somewhere else first
Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:50:59
ausinch: you still might want to extract the package for the latest kernel and cmp the kernel with what's in /boot/
Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:51:10
ausinch: dpkg -x .deb
Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:51:27
ausinch: you can clone it from /var/cache/apt/archives/
JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:51:48
iirc, the last time I used debian was on a laptop circa 2009
JayCoyote 2017-02-27 23:51:59
used/installed

I'm going to have to think about this some more. Thanks for your time

eigen2.oef anyway
rudolf_ 2017-02-27 23:53:53
The previous command searches for it?
Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:54:11

rudolf_ 2017-02-27 23:54:37
Ok..thanks a lot
Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:54:37
one of the results ... wims-extra-all: /var/lib/wims/public_html/modules/U1/algebra/oefdiag.fr/src/eigen2.oef
rudolf_ 2017-02-27 23:54:54

Shadow_7 2017-02-27 23:55:47

what is the diffence between a normal boot of debian 8 and if i go into the recovery mode with root-P/W and tip in 'sytemctl default' ? I have the problem, that my system boot until it reach the massage '/dev/sda1/ is clean. The LVM doesn't want to start. Can somebody help me, pls?
julius 2017-02-28 00:25:39
hi
julius 2017-02-28 00:25:55
wasnt there a command caled "grub-update" or "update-grub" to update the grup config?
towo^work 2017-02-28 00:26:09
update-frub there is
towo^work 2017-02-28 00:26:19
*update-grub
n4dir 2017-02-28 00:28:44
"apropos" is a bless, in this case "apropos grub"
julius 2017-02-28 00:29:18
and grub2 is the current version?
julius 2017-02-28 00:29:44
weird, somehow i dont have grub2 installed anymore
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:30:03
did you install grub-legacy?
julius 2017-02-28 00:30:32
not that i know of
julius 2017-02-28 00:30:55
dpkg -l |grep grub shows nothing
dpkg 2017-02-28 00:30:56
ii |grep grub shows nothing 2.1-5.1 julius's private stamp collection
julius 2017-02-28 00:32:05
oh, the bot recognized that as a command
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:32:40
you could just "dpkg -l grub", the grep is redundant. although it changes a release or two back to only show "installed" things
julius 2017-02-28 00:33:02
ah ok
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:33:13
And '*grub*' would be better since grub might grab local path contents instead.
julius 2017-02-28 00:33:25
now i instaled it and told it to install to /dev/sda....lets see how that goes
julius 2017-02-28 00:33:50
what are "local path contents" ?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:34:13
apt-cache search --names-only grub ...the modern equivalent... although I go a bit more oldschool with dpkg-query --load-avail -l '*grub*', although need dselect update to populate available.
julius 2017-02-28 00:34:14
be right back
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:35:27
julius: dpkg -l grub ... if you have ./grub or other files ./ninegrubs in your current path, it finds those instead of packages. unless you '*grub*'... probably a bash completion thing
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:36:52
Hmmm... looks like dpkg -l '*grub*' behaves as it once did now.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:37:33
might still need dselect update to have the functionality though.
julius 2017-02-28 00:44:49
grub kinda jumbled my setup together, got two debian versions installed and a third system that is currently corrupt... it looks like grub did setup one entry for every kernel that it found in /boot and did set all roots to the corrupted system
julius 2017-02-28 00:45:06
how do i tell grub to use kenrel xyz with a specific root?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:46:40
julius: manually edit the /boot/grub/grub.cfg or create custom entries. /etc/grub.d/ or /etc/default/grub
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 00:46:49
HI folks
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:47:19
julius: I often have to do that because I prefer UUIDs. so changing root=/dev/sda1 to root=UUID=.......
digup 2017-02-28 00:47:48
I have a USB headset plugged in and I'm not getting any sound. I have pulseaudio installed. I can get sound from teamspeak by selecting playback ALSA which then has the headset option; however, pulseaudio doesn't and it seem the system default is pulseaudio for other applications.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:47:51
although grub has gotten better at things, as long as /etc/fstab uses UUIDs and is correct
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:48:32
digup: pavucontrol

julius 2017-02-28 00:50:02
Shadow_7, so youre saying that: /dev/mapper/t560--vg-ubuntu15.04 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 this will not work for grub?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:50:51
julius: depends on your setup... I tend to use usb sticks and those work best with LABEL or UUID
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 00:51:14
digup, you should have heaphone output ctl with pulseaudio as well as as alsamixer
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:51:27
the /dev/ 's work... until you move the usb stick
julius 2017-02-28 00:52:41
Shadow_7, its a laptop with one drive
jelly 2017-02-28 00:52:50
julius: /dev/mapper/ lvm paths are not dependent on order of disks, so using root=/dev/mapper/t560--vg-ubuntu15.04 will most likely work
jelly 2017-02-28 00:53:06
sticks and stones won't break that
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 00:53:12
digup, on desktops you can use the 3mm connections for phones as well as other devices
digup 2017-02-28 00:53:33
BluesKaj: I can change the default output device under the KDE options, but none of the listed devices playback sound. I don't see the same option that ALSA has on teamspeak.
julius 2017-02-28 00:53:56
jelly, well...grub generated this for me: https://bpaste.net/show/1d1f0f6e0ed6
julius 2017-02-28 00:54:09
jelly, as you can see...they all point to a different root
julius 2017-02-28 00:54:32
and its just a old partition, i am really on debian
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:54:34
digup: pavucontrol. It's the mixer for pulseaudio, when things change it assumes you only want to use what you previously used, so you have to tell it otherwise.
jelly 2017-02-28 00:54:56
julius: are you sharing one /boot filesystem among multiple OS installs? That's probably not a good idea
digup 2017-02-28 00:54:59
Shadow_7: Isn't pavucontrol for gtk?
digup 2017-02-28 00:55:06
And plasma-pa for kde?
julius 2017-02-28 00:55:06
jelly, yes
jelly 2017-02-28 00:55:47
julius: don't do that. Pick one OS to manage that partition, and configure others to have their /boot in their /
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 00:55:56
digup, check out alsamixer in the termianl and pulseaudio in system settings>multimedia>device prefernces and the hardware tab settings
julius 2017-02-28 00:56:18
jelly, you mean one grub calls "another" grub?
jelly 2017-02-28 00:57:00
julius: no need to do that, but with such a setup update-grub (well, os-prober) will be able to detect other linux installs properly and create a saner config
julius 2017-02-28 00:57:01
jelly, any google search terms for how to set this up?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:57:16
digup: it's a gtk3 app. don't have plasma-pa on jessie with no backports
digup 2017-02-28 00:57:29
Shadow_7: I'm using sid atm
jelly 2017-02-28 00:57:37
julius: "don't use separate /boot" isn't really a search term
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 00:58:06
julius: update-grub should set it up. Until it fails you.
julius 2017-02-28 00:58:20
jelly, all i need todo is to give each system its own /boot partition, besides the "first" one? which resides outside the lvm?
jelly 2017-02-28 00:58:53
julius: no, just don't give them a separate /boot at all, let them keep that directory on /
jelly 2017-02-28 00:59:25
your idea would work as well, but you'd have so many partitions.
julius 2017-02-28 00:59:56
jelly, so just one /boot outside of the lvm and all other partitions inside the lvm?
digup 2017-02-28 01:00:23
BluesKaj: Yea those playback devices all don't work, and I don't see anything like "HyperX 7.1 Audio (USB Audio)" like the options in teamspeak.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:01:14
digup: does the device show up in /proc/asound/cards ?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:01:39
digup: it might have some less flashy name like hw:3
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:01:41
digup, digital audio out is controlled by spdif out
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:02:32
but I doubt that would work with a headset
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:02:39
it's analog
digup 2017-02-28 01:02:43
Yea /proc/asound/cards shows "2 SB-Audio - HyperX 7.1 Audio"
digup 2017-02-28 01:02:57
USB*
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:03:03
digup: so hw:2 then.
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:03:42
is this a Usb outboard soundcard
digup 2017-02-28 01:03:42
Yea, teamspeak is using hw:2 also
digup 2017-02-28 01:04:04
How would I get the whole system to use that?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:04:18
default soundcard should be card"0"
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:04:27
if using alsa only... echo defaults.pcm.card 2 > ~/.asoundrc
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:04:49
but pulseaudio, you select it... and deselect everything but it.
digup 2017-02-28 01:04:50
0 would be intel, 1 is AMD audio, 2 is headset USB
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:05:36
And sometimes you have to mute / unmute to give pulse half a clue of your desires.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:06:25
or un-default / default. whatever those button things are the kids use these days
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:08:26
digup, make sure the automute in alsamixer is disabled as well
digup 2017-02-28 01:12:15

abrotman 2017-02-28 01:29:22
slander is spoken
stoned 2017-02-28 01:29:29
abrotman: ah, thanks

BluesKaj: keep your personal opinions of other users out of this channel, this is your only warning

I really ought to remoe this 3rd monitor, 2nd gpu, move to 1 gpu, and just use Noveu driver and Xrandr, instead of Xinerama and stitching together 3 monitors across 2 gpu. Then I can use stretch w/o the goofy nvidia package bug.
stoned 2017-02-28 01:33:03
*sigh*
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:33:27
jelly, ok, but you'll see what I mean soon enough
themill 2017-02-28 01:33:39
stoned: btw nvidia-legacy-check doesn't have a postinst. It's awfully hard to triage this...
stoned 2017-02-28 01:33:52
themill: I'll do another stretch install in a vm.
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:34:28
themill, nvidia legavy check isn't necessarily accurate
stoned 2017-02-28 01:34:31
themill: if you won't mind, could you grep my name for yesterday?
stoned 2017-02-28 01:34:41
themill: I might have pasted the error here.
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:34:55
domovoy_: it's not that hard. You can rsync an install to such a thing and chroot install the bootloader. Make sure you change the /etc/fstab and such for it's new location.
themill 2017-02-28 01:35:15
stoned: you mentioned a couple of different package names neither of which actually exist
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:35:39
domovoy_: otherwise debootstrap installations are well suited for usb sticks.
domovoy_ 2017-02-28 01:36:06
Shadow_7: so, a 'debootstrap + chroot + fstab + apt-get install grub' should work?
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:36:06
domovoy_: make sure you set a root password and install kernel to boot as part of the "extra" steps though.
domovoy_ 2017-02-28 01:36:36
Shadow_7: great, thanks
stoned 2017-02-28 01:36:51
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/nvidia-legacy-check
stoned 2017-02-28 01:37:01
This package runs when I try to do apt-get install nvidia-driver
Shadow_7 2017-02-28 01:37:07
domovoy_: formatting of the stick and stuff is pre-debootstrap, and make sure you install networking tools and firmwares before you boot it.
stoned 2017-02-28 01:37:09
This package seems to have the problem
themill 2017-02-28 01:37:12
stoned: and it doesn't have a postinst
stoned 2017-02-28 01:37:14
I'll have to do another install.
themill 2017-02-28 01:37:28
please. real data → reportbug
stoned 2017-02-28 01:37:38
Find out. But both times, (upgrade AND fresh install of stretch) reported this package and failed to isntall
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:39:20
stoned , which nvidia driver do you have installed?
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:42:32
stoned, for your info the recommned driver for the 8400GS uses the nvidia-340 driver and it works just great on stretch
BluesKaj 2017-02-28 01:44:16
probly has me on ignore by now:-)
