can someone explain me why visudo, wich has even vi in its name , doesnt use vi as editor by default, at least not on debian
sypher 2017-02-02 00:49:26
pron: Because it uses whichever editor is in the EDITOR environment variable.
sypher 2017-02-02 00:49:46
pron: Or nano by default, if not specified, I believe.
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:50:13
Hello! When I try to install openjdk-8-jre using `sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre` it says "The following packages have unmet dependencies: openjdk-8-jre : Depends: openjdk-8-jre-headless (= 8u121-b13-1~bpo8+1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages."
sypher 2017-02-02 00:50:15
As to the why: vi is not part of a default install. nano is.
pron 2017-02-02 00:50:29
i sypher yes why damn nano , its VIsudo
pron 2017-02-02 00:50:46
why nano by default :/
sypher 2017-02-02 00:50:55
pron: because vi is not part of a default install.
pron 2017-02-02 00:50:56
it should be NANOsudo then
pron 2017-02-02 00:50:59
it is
pron 2017-02-02 00:51:01
..
pron 2017-02-02 00:51:26
it is even part of absolutely minimal install when u remove even minimal selection
pron 2017-02-02 00:51:28
:]
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:51:37
sypher: vi is part of default install. VIM isn't
pron 2017-02-02 00:51:39
i am talking about vi not vim
sypher 2017-02-02 00:51:42
pron: Well, maybe it is. Probably because changing the name of a universal command seems like a bad plan when it can be used with any editor.
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:02
yes
sypher 2017-02-02 00:52:05
If you want to use vi, just set the EDITOR env variable to vi.
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:13
it is nnoing
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:17
to do that so many times
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:33
especialy if the name of app sugeests it will be using vi
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:34
:]
pron 2017-02-02 00:52:43
and there is no EDITOR variable
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:52:47
Hey guys need help with broken packages.
sypher 2017-02-02 00:52:55
pron: Yeah. There is, actually.
pron 2017-02-02 00:53:05
sypher: there is what?
pron 2017-02-02 00:53:12
env , doest show me any
sypher 2017-02-02 00:53:17
So set it.
pron 2017-02-02 00:53:23
why ..
sypher 2017-02-02 00:53:57
pron: ... Anyway, you have your solution. Griping about this won't change it.
pron 2017-02-02 00:54:01
if the only app that so far tries to use nano is app wichs name suggests me it gona use vi by defult
pron 2017-02-02 00:54:08
sypher: i am asking why
petemc 2017-02-02 00:54:10
update-alternatives --config editor
pron 2017-02-02 00:54:11
and how to change it
pron 2017-02-02 00:54:17
whos insane decision it ws
sypher 2017-02-02 00:54:19
pron: # EDITOR="vi" visudo
pron 2017-02-02 00:54:22
to do it this way
petemc 2017-02-02 00:54:41
stop complaining, it is easily fixed
sypher 2017-02-02 00:54:50
pron: If you put as much effort into learning how environment variables work as you did into whining, your problem would already be solved.
sypher 2017-02-02 00:55:12
pron: And petemc has given you an alternate (and probably better) solution as well.
pron 2017-02-02 00:55:16
sypher: i didnt cem here to find how to change edit it uses
pron 2017-02-02 00:55:26
i came here to understand why such decision was made
petemc 2017-02-02 00:55:37
you cant please everyone
pron 2017-02-02 00:55:37
to understand whos sick and twisted mind did it
coruja 2017-02-02 00:55:42
pron, instead of complaining here you are free to file a bug against visudo to point out your questions and criticism
pron 2017-02-02 00:55:51
i am asking here
pron 2017-02-02 00:55:55
at start
sypher 2017-02-02 00:55:59
pron: Probably the same sick and twisted mind that decided nano was an easier editor to use as the default, and I agree with that decision.
pron 2017-02-02 00:56:00
and not whining
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:56:02
coruja: +1
pron 2017-02-02 00:56:12
or whatever you call it

pron 2017-02-02 00:56:22
=)
pron 2017-02-02 00:56:56
i am asking if someone can explain, maybe i just dont understand the logic nehind it, maybe its not a bug
sypher 2017-02-02 00:57:03
pron: You've been given the responses you're going to get.
pron 2017-02-02 00:57:14
i did get ansvers i didnt ask
pron 2017-02-02 00:57:17
tbh
pron 2017-02-02 00:57:19
=)
pron 2017-02-02 00:57:24

pron 2017-02-02 00:58:00
well i didnt start this arrognance thing ;]
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:58:11
pron: A valid logical question I think. Please try http://www.sudo.ws/sudo/bugs/ and http://www.sudo.ws/mailman/listinfo/sudo-users and let us know! :)
sypher 2017-02-02 00:58:17
pron: Debatable, given your attitude.
pron 2017-02-02 00:58:34
sypher: my attitude was very nice until you started to bark
rootkea 2017-02-02 00:58:49
Let's cool down folks!

Hey guys need help with broken packages.
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:00:06
When I try to install openjdk-8-jre using `sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre` it says "The following packages have unmet dependencies: openjdk-8-jre : Depends: openjdk-8-jre-headless (= 8u121-b13-1~bpo8+1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages."
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:01:00
Then when I try to install `openjdk-8-jre-headless` it says "The following packages have unmet dependencies: openjdk-8-jre-headless : Depends: ca-certificates-java but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages."
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:01:58
And Then when I try to install `ca-certificates-java` it says and this is funny! "ca-certificates-java is already the newest version."
pron 2017-02-02 01:02:22
rootkea: by any chanse do you have some weird mux of repos in your your sources.list
unborn 2017-02-02 01:02:24
pron: its very simple, some of us are very well advanced on other stuff and some of us on another.. if you ask your question here and no one know the answer then you may wait longer for anyone capable to help you with your issue.. be it minutes/hours/days/years/decades.. we are not all in same time zone and no one have to give you spoonfeeding or walk you by hand.. I know you asked the question and so far no proper answer according to your meanings was
unborn 2017-02-02 01:02:24
provided.. so please wait or ask again in few hours, but put your arrogant attitude away please, end of the day, we all are here to make things working and being easier right?
pron 2017-02-02 01:02:24
?
pron 2017-02-02 01:03:33
unborn: i m fine with waiting and never had issues with , i am using debian over 10 years and unix over 15 and same is for irc
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:04:31
pron: No. Just a R repo besides Debian repos.
pron 2017-02-02 01:04:36

No package named 'openjdk' was found in amd64.
coruja 2017-02-02 01:07:28
rootkea, may we see 'apt policy' too?
pron 2017-02-02 01:07:30
rootkea: can you do that
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:07:48
umm apt policy? Lemme search what is that
pron 2017-02-02 01:08:15
basicly most lkely this r repo is interfering and has something propanly newer there
pron 2017-02-02 01:08:24
i would dig in that direction

now that I have the syslinux problem somewhat solved, I'm playing with the idea of making an installer USB thumb drive formatted ext4fs
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:09:01
has anyone here tried this?
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:09:29

dgriffi: i would highly suggest pxe if it fits your enviroment
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:10:50
pron: I'm starting with https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s03.html.en and substituting ext4fs stuff... Just to see what happens.
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:11:22
pron: my intent is to create a 64GB installer thumb drive and put a double-layer bluray iso on it.
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:12:03
since fat32 can't handle a single file that big, I have to use ext?fs.
pron 2017-02-02 01:12:46
dgriffi: to make it clear, i never did any usb installer on linux, and actualy any once i discovered pxe
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:12:46
pxe does sound like it would do the trick.. I've become quite handy at net pxe stuff

i hope =)
pron 2017-02-02 01:15:25
only reaso i see, one would need usb installer , besides nic without pxe rom, is it has to install stuff at locations where internet and network is a luxury
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:15:30

or just before reboot
unborn 2017-02-02 01:34:46
and it would work ...or it should
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:35:07
unborn: why no reboot? just wondering
unborn 2017-02-02 01:35:58
rootkea: when I was dealing with my quatro graphics.. I had to uninstall whole gnome just because of repo I've added.. once uninstalled I just install it from origin repo before log yout or reboot - and everything was/is working fine..
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:36:52
unborn: Very well then! I'm all prepared to push the button! See you on other side LOL!
unborn 2017-02-02 01:37:21
rootkea: because this will uninstall few packages which you may need to run your stuff.. it all depends from how did you set ip up.. once uninstalled - if no log out or no reboot.. services and other things will be still running means you will be able to continue to work without headache
unborn 2017-02-02 01:37:40
I mean this could not be your issue rootkea ....just in case you know ;)

Hi! I just installed Debian for the first time; laptop has an nvidia card that I wish to keep switched off. So I installed bumblebee and primus. But there is no bbswitch to turn it off. What do I do?
unborn 2017-02-02 01:38:38

hi guys, sorry for OFFTOPIC msg but someone knows where i found lpi2 discount coupon?
unborn 2017-02-02 01:43:08

unborn: Ah, yes, it is an optimus laptop; but can't I use bbswitch to turn it off?
c00kiemon5ter 2017-02-02 01:43:49
when I do: apt install package-foo # the screen clears once apt is done installing the package. How can I stop that?

unborn: Ok. So I uninstalled ca-certificates-java and those 53 packages along with it. Then I fired "apt-get install openjdk-8-jre" and voila!
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:44:14
Same error! :/
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:44:38
Now I'm installing ca-certificates-java again. :(
