terma: on my previous laptop I was not able to do it so.. but my previous laptop was a bit older.. I think its no longer supported.. I had to downgrade to my current.. it have (I think intel gfs) but less cpu power..
unborn 2017-02-02 01:45:30
rootkea: did you do apt-get update?
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:45:35
And those 53 packages are still waiting to be installed.
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:45:45
unborn: Yes. I did.
unborn 2017-02-02 01:46:30
rootkea: im baffled - this should work normally
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:46:46
BTW I remember a distict action in the afternoon concerning java which may have caused the issue.
vista 2017-02-02 01:47:00
Hi, I am having a ton of trouble getting debian to install - in the installer, only the pendrive I am installing from shows up as an option, but fdisk shows all disks just fine - after that, I attempted to do a "manual" install, did partitioning, debootstrap, installed the kernel image and grub onto the boot partition
unborn 2017-02-02 01:47:21
rootkea: gosh :)
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:47:46
unborn: I installed "r-cran-rjava" in the afternoon and I'm seeing this issue now
unborn 2017-02-02 01:48:03
vista: how did you created your usb stick?
unborn 2017-02-02 01:48:06
may I ask
vista 2017-02-02 01:48:21
after rebooting, grub put me in a grub rescue shell with the error "unknown partition type". I attempted to do a manual install again, thinking I messed something up - now, after doing everything again, I get a grub "Error 17"
unborn 2017-02-02 01:48:37
rootkea: as I said.. - gosh :)
vista 2017-02-02 01:48:54
unborn: I am using a USB stick that worked fine until I got to this specific server
unborn 2017-02-02 01:48:54
fix that and then reinstall those packages..
vista 2017-02-02 01:48:56
8.7.1
unborn 2017-02-02 01:49:21
vista: sure.. how did you create your usb bootable stick for debian?
vista 2017-02-02 01:49:36
It's a debian live stick, by the way, but I used a debian netinst before that
unborn 2017-02-02 01:50:02
heh
vista 2017-02-02 01:50:03
I have no idea, I'll ask the guy who created the bootable pendrive
vista 2017-02-02 01:50:05
back in a mo
unborn 2017-02-02 01:50:08
okay
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:50:23
unborn: Now what should I do? I do want to install openjdk-8-jre especially given that I have uninstalled 50+ packages for that
unborn 2017-02-02 01:50:34
ask him..seems to me as unetbootin.. which is not good idea
unborn 2017-02-02 01:50:40
vista ^^^
vista 2017-02-02 01:50:51
the guy who created it is no longer on shift
vista 2017-02-02 01:51:08
but the disk worked juuuuuuust fine for several installs
unborn 2017-02-02 01:51:16
vista: if you on linux you can do it by your self.. you dont need anyone
vista 2017-02-02 01:51:32
I am not physically in the same place as the server :)
unborn 2017-02-02 01:51:39
vista: sure.. but it was may be created before differently
unborn 2017-02-02 01:51:46
aha
unborn 2017-02-02 01:52:11
vista: then email him / message him how did he created usb stick.. if unetbootin - you can have those kind of issues
vista 2017-02-02 01:52:45
our operators are trained to just dd it to the pendrive
vista 2017-02-02 01:52:55
if he sticked to the script, that's what happened
unborn 2017-02-02 01:53:28
rootkea: just install it with apt-get install your package && list of packages from that text file
unborn 2017-02-02 01:53:50
as it was outputted from terminal just before you uninstall it
unborn 2017-02-02 01:54:55
vista: yes.. so usb stick would work.. if not - its may be corrupted or something.. he will have to redo the stick again
unborn 2017-02-02 01:55:14
would / should - meaning same for me
micw 2017-02-02 01:55:30
hi
dgriffi 2017-02-02 01:55:52
unborn: the difference between "would" and "should" is the same as "may" and "shall"
unborn 2017-02-02 01:55:52
vista .. if that is big word.. you know ;)
micw 2017-02-02 01:56:04
seems to be a problem with network-manager-openvpn: it chroots to /var/lib/openvpn/chroot/
unborn 2017-02-02 01:56:05
dgriffi: thanks
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:56:08
unborn: I did and I don't mind the extra work but I'm lil disappointed that I still can't install openjdk-8-jre using apt-get
micw 2017-02-02 01:56:12
there it fails to read entropy
rootkea 2017-02-02 01:56:20
dispite of it being in repos
micw 2017-02-02 01:56:26
after creating /var/lib/openvpn/chroot/dev/random and /var/lib/openvpn/chroot/dev/urandom it works
Vladimirski 2017-02-02 01:56:26
When installing debian, I am trying to setup LVM with the whole diskspace but I only want a small part for the system, the problem is that it only gives me the whole disk option
unborn 2017-02-02 01:59:39
rootkea: well.. sometimes adding those so called ppas or 3th party repos can damage your system. I am puzzled why on earth you cannot reinstall this package in normal way.. as you should be able now. perhaps lesson learned - if you have snapshots or backups - try to restore them one by one.. if not - backup important stuff to external hdd and reinstall your system - that is all I can say, we spend time on it however something is still preventing you to
unborn 2017-02-02 01:59:39
do your task. it would be better to do this way then try to investigate. there is an link which can explain this.. let me dig this out for you
unborn 2017-02-02 02:00:09
rootkea: https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:01:39
unborn: Wish I had knew about that page earlier. Sigh.
unborn 2017-02-02 02:01:46
rootkea: I did everything I could to make it possible for you to do recover (normally this way always works!) - perhaps my knowledge is a bit limited but https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian is good practice for any devops and sysops..
unborn 2017-02-02 02:02:42
rootkea: if I can suggest you.. install fresh debian with virtualbox.. then in virtualbox.. install debian as well
unborn 2017-02-02 02:03:34
rootkea: create snapshot of new virtualmachine and do your test there.. if anything will get breake - just redo the snapshot
unborn 2017-02-02 02:03:51
this way you can test it with absolutely no harm
unborn 2017-02-02 02:04:11
and see it on your own eyes rootkea - im sorry to fail to help you.
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:04:35
unborn: Sounds good! No. Please don't be. Thank you for your help! :)
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:05:13
unborn: BTW a little development if it could be helpful
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:06:00
Now when I say intall openjdk-8-jre it doesn't cry for openjdk-8-jre which in turn used to cry for `ca-certificates-java`
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:06:20
Now it says "openjdk-8-jre-headless : Breaks: ca-certificates-java (< 20160321~) but 20140324 is to be installed"
unborn 2017-02-02 02:06:36
ah rootkea :) so what was the issue then?
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:07:18
Oops! Mistyped. Lemme restate the issue.
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:08:29
When I try to install openjdk-8-jre-headless which is a dependency for openjdk-8-jre it says "openjdk-8-jre-headless : Breaks: ca-certificates-java (< 20160321~) but 20140324 is to be installed"
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:09:08
I think it wants to install the older version of `ca-certificates-java`
unborn 2017-02-02 02:09:46
rootkea: seems right to me, try it!
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:09:52
How do I ask it to procede?
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:10:08
BTW I'm already using -f flag
unborn 2017-02-02 02:10:26
rootkea: remove already installed ca-cert....
unborn 2017-02-02 02:10:35
or at least check them if they are installed
unborn 2017-02-02 02:10:43
*already
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:11:01
Uninstall: just did by myself using apt-get!
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:11:07
unborn: ^^
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:11:28
I installed the ca-cerificates-java myself
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:12:12
So should I remve it and then install openjdk-8-jre-headless which will install the older version of ca-cerificates-java?
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:12:18
*remove
unborn 2017-02-02 02:12:30
rootkea: - sure.. unisntall it and then apt-get install java thingy.. it should install all those certs automatically
unborn 2017-02-02 02:12:53
*yes
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:14:18
unborn: Ok. Now you know what? I uninstalled ca-certificates-java and tried to install openjdk-8-jre which now says "openjdk-8-jre-headless : Depends: ca-certificates-java but it is not going to be installed"
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:14:32
*openjdk-8-jre-headless
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:15:16
unborn: Now again if I try to install ca-certificates-java by myself it's going to cry for older version WTF!
ChrisH 2017-02-02 02:15:58
Anyone having a suggestion for a Java Keystore handlung GUI application from Debian repos? I only found Portecle, which is not bundled.
unborn 2017-02-02 02:17:03
rootkea: as I said, I think your system is broken.. as last resolution I would try to install just openjdk-8-jre and if that will not work, - as I said, backup it and redeploy whole system.. then without anything to do to main system I would install virtualbox and deploy debian there and do hocuspous magic there.. not on main system..
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:22:12
unborn: I have decided to resort to default-jre and default-jdk which are openjdk-7* instead of openjdk-8*
unborn 2017-02-02 02:22:51
rootkea: yeah.. thats another way - but dont your app needs jdk8?
abrotman 2017-02-02 02:23:21
rootkea: did you try aptitude?
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:23:56
unborn: I am not sure. In middle of a project with chaging tech stack. It's a bit complicated.
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:24:18
abrotman: Oh! I forgot aptitude for a while. Lemme try that!
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:24:55
unborn: But I just wanted to be on latest tech stack
unborn 2017-02-02 02:25:48
rootkea: sure.. understood.. sometimes is better to stuck for a while with stable things, you know.. thats why we are all on debian ;)
rootkea 2017-02-02 02:26:22
unborn: I know! But the funny thing is openjdk-8-jre is in OFFICIAL repos LOL!
unborn 2017-02-02 02:27:36
yeah rootkea but the thing is - dont break debian - as I posted to you.. I have no idea what that repo contains or who is the maintainer and other sort of things.. aka what it does update and remove etc..
unborn 2017-02-02 02:28:16
its just generally bad idea to add random repos to your main os.. always use virtualbox or anything virtual where you can test it first
unborn 2017-02-02 02:29:38
abrotman: hi, I think he done everything with apt-get.. I know I get aptitude is different db for those things but I have feeling he would have same results for this one (sorry if I am wrong)
TyrfingMjolnir 2017-02-02 02:30:06
Where is will crontab output errors to?
unborn 2017-02-02 02:31:05
TyrfingMjolnir: to where you did set it up.. usually its in /var/logs/ or /var/log/
TyrfingMjolnir 2017-02-02 02:31:15
/var/log/syslog?
unborn 2017-02-02 02:31:37
TyrfingMjolnir: it can go even to your emails.. as I said it will go where you tell it to go.
TyrfingMjolnir 2017-02-02 02:32:50
I did not tell it
TyrfingMjolnir 2017-02-02 02:32:54
to go anywhere
unborn 2017-02-02 02:35:07
TyrfingMjolnir: so see your log directory but if your cron job ends to not log anything (> /dev/null 2>&1) then you are out of luck unfortunately
jelly 2017-02-02 02:36:23
TyrfingMjolnir: output from user's cron jobs goes to user's mail
jelly 2017-02-02 02:36:50
TyrfingMjolnir: that means you need to have some kind of MTA (mail server software) installed
unborn 2017-02-02 02:36:56
jelly not always.. it depends how he did set up the cron command...
jelly 2017-02-02 02:37:05
unborn: yes always.
unborn 2017-02-02 02:37:49
jelly: even if specified in end of the command to > /dev/null 2>&1?
jelly 2017-02-02 02:38:14
unborn: then that job definition will not generate _any_ output
jelly 2017-02-02 02:38:36
that doesn't change how cron works
unborn 2017-02-02 02:39:09
jelly: exactly.. its worth to ask user if he did specified this or not.. (not meaning to be offensive or any other rubbish...im just saying)
jelly 2017-02-02 02:39:28
unborn: that's not "exactly", that's a different thing
depesz 2017-02-02 02:39:42
hi. hwo can I make .deb out of "*.dsc, *debian.tar.xz and *.orig.tar.gz ?
unborn 2017-02-02 02:39:52
jelly - sure I understood.
depesz 2017-02-02 02:39:58
I don't have debian directory, so can't do (as I usually did) debian/rules binary.
James123_ 2017-02-02 02:40:22
Hello, I have a partition mounted at /mnt/storage (xfs filesystem) and I want multiple users to read and write freely. Any ideas on how to do that?
jelly 2017-02-02 02:40:39
unborn, TyrfingMjolnir: you can however ask cron to send output to some address other than local user. man 5 crontab, read about MAILTO
TyrfingMjolnir 2017-02-02 02:40:52
I receive error: Syntax error: "(" unexpected when running my script from crontab, opposed to running successfully when executed from command line
jelly 2017-02-02 02:41:30
TyrfingMjolnir: does your script have first line starting with #! and is it executable?
depesz 2017-02-02 02:42:13
James123_: chmod 1777 /mnt/storage ?
depesz 2017-02-02 02:42:28
TyrfingMjolnir: most likely you used bash extensions, while crontab runs your script using sh
unborn 2017-02-02 02:42:51
TyrfingMjolnir: I would agree with jelly.. well its what I previously said, but jelly is much clear about the options (sorry i use cron for long time and sometimes I do not understand start point of the convo when I expecting from user to know cron all the way around) and thank you jelly for noticing me :)
James123_ 2017-02-02 02:43:09
depesz: thank you!
jelly 2017-02-02 02:43:54
unborn: oh, and cron jobs won't send output to syslog or anywhere in /var/log unless they're programmed to do that
unborn 2017-02-02 02:44:43
jelly - i know, but as we are.... sorry but my cron does as I always say it to do so.. now I see your point in whole.
