Google chrome is freezing on my debian stretch install. I suspect(ed) this to be because of the gpu driver - ati radeon hd 5450, xserver-ati. When i dist-upgrade to sid google chrome works fine, so I am thinking to upgrade my driver, but it seems that the version in stretch is the same as sid. Any suggestions on what to do ? What else might cause this? I need google chrome
awal1 2017-02-02 07:55:19
debian-next, 'vivaldi' is a better alternative than 'chrome' from google if you don't like 'chromium'
ds8g79 2017-02-02 07:55:23
debian-next: is it possible it's the xorg freeze that can be worked around with going to some other tty and back?
SynrG 2017-02-02 07:55:48
and in any case, if you try chromium and it doesn't freeze, problem solved. if it does freeze, you can pursue it as a bug in debian ...
SynrG 2017-02-02 07:56:02
but if not, we can't help much, since its only happening in non-debian software.
SynrG 2017-02-02 07:56:21
or putting it another way:
ds8g79 2017-02-02 07:56:25
dtcrshr: if it matters, bumblebee wiki says don't make xorg.conf, only for single GPU setups
SynrG 2017-02-02 07:56:28
- reproduce the issue in debian, then we can talk :)
debian-next 2017-02-02 08:01:26
ds8g79 xorg does not freeze it is just google-chrome. awal1 the non-free google chrome. awal1 i need properiatary google chrome. SynrG I understand. I thought it might be due to some software since it is working fine in sid...

Available kernel versions are: experimental: 4.8.0-rc8-686-pae (4.8~rc8-1~exp1); sid: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.6-3); stretch: 4.9.0-1-686-pae (4.9.2-2); jessie-backports: 4.9.0-0.bpo.1-686 (4.9.2-2~bpo8+1); jessie: 3.16.0-4-686-pae (3.16.39-1); wheezy-backports: 3.16.0-0.bpo.4-686-pae (3.16.39-1~bpo70+1); wheezy: 3.2.0-4-686-pae (3.2.84-1)
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:02:42
debian-next: different kernel in stretch vs. sid
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:02:51
possibly a part of the puzzle?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:03:44
debian-next: otherwise, iterate over all the deps of xserver-xorg-video-ati and see if there is any difference in versions between the two releases (though i haven't spotted any yet)
debian-next 2017-02-02 08:04:17
alright...
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:04:36
debian-next: also, you know #debian-next @ irc.oftc.net is the place for this discussion :)
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:04:50
just realized we're not there :p
debian-next 2017-02-02 08:05:19

SynrG 2017-02-02 08:06:24
... which would do no good on freenode, yeah ... but otherwise a likely scenario :)

Hello, when I try to launch Aegisub or Steam, I have that error message : "Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0"."
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:10:46
do you have libgl1-mesa-glx and libgl1-mesa-dri installed?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:11:12
FirePowi: and what GPU chipset / driver are you using?
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:11:44
I have a NVidia GF 8400M
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:11:50

SynrG 2017-02-02 08:12:01
FirePowi: proprietary nvidia driver, or nouveau?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:12:23
FirePowi: did this work before and recently break? or have you never gotten it to work before?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:12:36
FirePowi: if it's recent, what changed?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:12:58
(e.g. recently updated to a new release, upgraded testing, etc.)
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:13:19
Never got it to work.
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:13:35
(Fresh install)
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:13:51
(Well… Not that fresh, in fact)
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:13:53
so using nouveau?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:14:08
(i.e. the driver that is installed by default in debian)
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:14:36
I think I'm using nvidia driver. But not sure. In fact, I installed it and run nvidia-xconfig and reboot.
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:15:09
FirePowi: when installing nvidia, make sure you have the right one for your gfx card. there are -legacy versions for older cards.
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:15:41
"do you have libgl1-mesa-glx and libgl1-mesa-dri installed?" // Yup.
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:16:12
Have to check there : https://wiki.debian.org/fr/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Version_340.96 ?

FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:17:18
Oh, thanks.
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:17:27
So I should take that one ?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:17:29
FirePowi: ^^ says it supports your card. i don't know the package name for jessie that corresponds
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:17:43
that one's from jessie-backports. it may not be necessary to use the backports driver
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:18:10
my rule of thumb is to start with stable before trying backports
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:18:19
and only use backports if i have issues with the one in stable
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:18:41

Chrismeister 2017-02-02 08:18:50
Although I set gnome to never prompt or automatically mount devices my system does. Is there a service automatically mounting devices?
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:19:15
FirePowi: looks like jessie has 340.101 anyway, so your card should be supported by the non-legacy 'nvidia-driver'
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:19:25
FirePowi: so says the package description
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:20:23
Well.
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:20:40
It look like not :s
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:21:05
check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ... is it successfully loading the nVidia driver?
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:21:48
It load "nouveau"
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:22:56
FirePowi: then you didn't actually install the non-free driver
SynrG 2017-02-02 08:23:09
FirePowi: apt-cache policy nvidia-driver
FirePowi 2017-02-02 08:23:46
