#debian channel featuring Digital, klys, CeBe, gigaset, AlexPortable, arTee,

SynrG 2017-02-03 04:45:19
i've recommended to the team to remove it and i think it probably will be next release. there are lots of corner cases where it fails ...
Digital 2017-02-03 04:45:25
ah, I know. it's some missing some firmware which I'm not going to install because i want to stick to open source
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:45:28
doesn't seem to be worth the hassle to maintain anymore
Digital 2017-02-03 04:45:51
SynrG, I'm not using the live iso
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:45:59
Digital: oh, good. then pitch your hardware and install on hardware not requiring firmware. problem solved :)
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:47:02
Digital: ah, in the scrollback i see where you said you mistakenly put the wrong image on the usb ...
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:47:20
sorry. guess i missed that bit the first time
Digital 2017-02-03 04:47:40
no problem
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:48:10
anyway, are you sure the missing firmware messages are relevant? it's pretty normaly to have, e.g. realtek messages ...
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:48:19
and it's not strictly needed (most of the time) to work
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:48:35
what you're looking for is not just *any* messages, but one leading to the failure to configure
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:48:58
i haven't ever seen a case where a missing firmware caused a kernel to not configure, but i could be wrong about this ...
Digital 2017-02-03 04:49:34
I'm not sure now that you ask
AlexPortable 2017-02-03 04:49:43
How do I export the choices I made in the installer to a preseed file?
Digital 2017-02-03 04:51:56
wait, log files aren't saved? ugh
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:52:21
Digital: the installer logs this stuff somewhere. /var/log/installer/ or so
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:53:06
maybe doesn't get put there until the end of the process though
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:53:44
(but in that case, it's being logged *somewhere* before it gets copied, finally, to /target/var/log/installer/ in a hook that runs at the end)
SynrG 2017-02-03 04:54:09
at least, based on my vague recollection :)
Digital 2017-02-03 04:55:53
I can't find it
Digital 2017-02-03 04:56:12
does this work in a vm? i want to continue using my pc lol
Digital 2017-02-03 04:58:06
duh, i hope this goes fast
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:07:33
Hello everyone. I installed heirloom-mailx and sendmail and gave a try to the command mail -s "Helloworld" me@mymail.com . entered the text, EOT, no error output, but the mail never arrived. Is it intended to be so?
klys 2017-02-03 05:08:04
gigaset, ping mymail.com
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:08:38
0% packet loss, all good
klys 2017-02-03 05:08:49
was the address 127.0.0.1 ?
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:09:00
klys, nope, was my personal email address
CeBe 2017-02-03 05:09:43
gigaset: mailq and tail -f /var/log/mail.log should help figuring out where the mail is
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:09:47
what does mailq say?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:10:00
^
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:10:01
heh
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:13:15
mailq: /var/spool/mqueue is empty
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:13:24
Total request:0
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:13:41
gigaset: whose mail server? yours, or your ISP's?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:15:07
gigaset: try sending a longer test message? i'm thinking if it was your ISP's mailserver, your excessively short email got spam filtered into the bit bucket :p
CeBe 2017-02-03 05:15:21
gigaset: /var/log/mail.log should contain a few records telling you what happend with the email
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:15:27
that too
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:15:29
SynrG, that is it, I probably need a mail server first!
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:15:44
gigaset: most people don't need mail servers
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:16:25
a simple one that routes mail to an ISP's mailserver set up as a smarthost is all that's needed to deliver emails to internet addresses
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:16:46
i'm assuming that's how you have it set up, though maybe i'm wrong on this point ...
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:17:31
SynrG, I still haven't set up anything, sorry for being so naive
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:19:13
I will get a server, as I just need the computer to send me an email when it gets rebooted
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:20:47
even though it may be a bit of an overkill to set a server up just to inform me of a reboot...
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:20:54
gigaset: really? i thought installing a mailx would bring an MTA in as a dep
piGoJeff 2017-02-03 05:20:59
#raspbian
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:21:36
SynrG, so you say it should work straight away?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:21:46
well, do you have exim4-daemon-light?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:22:04
this is standard in Debian
greycat 2017-02-03 05:22:10
Suggests: exim4 | mail-transport-agent
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:22:26
SynrG, ahem, I'm installing it now
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:22:42
gigaset: you didn't install standard, just base?
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:22:51
Yes
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:23:04
ah
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:23:30
so are missing things "an administrator might reasonably expect to be there by default", gotcha ;_
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:23:33
;)
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:23:38
sorry I probably should have mention it :)
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:23:43
np
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:24:04
greycat: skewed expectations, looking at stretch, too :p
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:24:37
greycat: bsd-mailx Depends: default-mta | mail-transport-agent
greycat 2017-02-03 05:24:58
Hmm, ok.
greycat 2017-02-03 05:25:07
there are so many freakin' mailxes
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:25:16
heirloom is gone. couldn't directly compare :p
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:25:32
well, not "gone". just no longer provides a mailx, iirc :)
greycat 2017-02-03 05:25:35
WHEEZY's heirloom-mailx has Suggests: exim4 | mail-transport-agent
greycat 2017-02-03 05:25:47
JESSIE's bsd-mailx has your Depends:
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:26:00
heh. yay, symmetry
greycat 2017-02-03 05:26:03
STRETCH's s-nail has Suggests: exim4 | mail-transport-agent
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:27:10
I guess I also need postfix as MTA, right?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:28:26
good grief. postfix? wtf?
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:28:34
why on earth?
greycat 2017-02-03 05:29:03
That is one of the many choices.
arTee 2017-02-03 05:29:04
m
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:29:22
sure, if it's your preference
greycat 2017-02-03 05:29:23
Debian uses exim4 by default, so that one may be more popular.
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:29:36
if *all* you want is to be able to make mailx work, seems like overkill
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:30:08
if all you need is local delivery, exim4-daemon-light (Priority: standard) is fine
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:30:40
perfect, I'll do my homework on that, thanks!
greycat 2017-02-03 05:31:27
But if you already *know* postfix in great depth, it's totally fine to use it.
gigaset 2017-02-03 05:31:37
totally no
greycat 2017-02-03 05:31:40
(I don't, but some people might.)
CeBe 2017-02-03 05:33:44
yeah, postfix is powerful, but therefor you need a bit of an effort to fully understand it first
Digital 2017-02-03 05:42:00
SynrG, nope, it wasn't a firmware issue
SynrG 2017-02-03 05:42:56
didn't think so. seemed the least likely explanation
Digital 2017-02-03 05:43:17
hopefully i have logs now
