Is it possible to launch an application and bring it to the fron via shell commands?
no_gravity 2017-02-03 06:52:12
Firefox 51 seems to have a bug so it does not bring new windows to the front. When I start it, the focus is on the last application I used, not on Firefox.
Digital 2017-02-03 06:52:21
no_gravity, maybe xdotool does the job
AlexPortable 2017-02-03 06:52:23
How do I export the choices I made in the installer to a preseed file?
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:02:08
so how much space does a debian installation take up?
LeMike 2017-02-03 07:02:19
Stop reading this leo! really... god damn it. hi all the others! ... leo stahp :P
no_gravity 2017-02-03 07:02:27
irc2000: How much do you have?
spektrum_ 2017-02-03 07:03:12
irc2000: around 250 mb for the netinst.
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:03:34
?
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:03:48
spektrum_: nonsensical answer ...
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:05:01
The netinst can install varying amounts of material depending on what you select.
spektrum_ 2017-02-03 07:05:34
SynrG: Of course, but for me it takes around 250 mb of disk.
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:05:37
no_gravity: 4GB. But pretty much all linux installations that I've had has succeeded 8-32 gb rather fast
no_gravity 2017-02-03 07:06:06
irc2000: All I know is that it works great with 10GB. Because that's how much I always assign to it.
greycat 2017-02-03 07:06:09
Depends on how you use it, more than anything else.
greycat 2017-02-03 07:06:48
My wheezy VPS running a wiki is using 2.5 GB of space, which includes the wiki, but does not include a kernel package, etc. (those are inherited from the host through OpenVZ).
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:06:54
I just want to run a webserver, that's all. I could do that under 1GB with archlinux. I got the picture of debian as a full DE os.
greycat 2017-02-03 07:07:14
Debian is very flexible. If you don't install a desktop, it won't have one.
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:07:30
spektrum_: comparing other people's m here, you're "special". so you can't really expect others to achieve your results without more carefully qualifying your answer.
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:07:32
That would be nice though.
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:07:55
s/m/numbers/
greycat 2017-02-03 07:07:55
1 GB would be very tight for most web servers, I think
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:08:03
yes.
teraflops 2017-02-03 07:08:19
irc2000: actuary debian is less bloated than archlinux regarding a tiny installation
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:08:21
greycat: not a huge problem with archlinux though
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:08:33
teraflops: really?
teraflops 2017-02-03 07:08:42
irc2000: it's a fact
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:08:43
hard to believe but entirely possible
greycat 2017-02-03 07:09:06
If you want exact answers, I would suggest you do a base install, or a standard install (which is bigger than base) and see.
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:09:21
yep
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:10:59
Hi. I am trying to install docker 1.13 on stretch via .deb, because the PPA isn't working (The repository 'https://apt.dockerproject.org/repo debian-n/a Release' does not have a Release file), but the .deb requires libdevmapper1.02.1 w/ friends (a.ka. dependencies..) -- and apt-get isn't resolving these.. Can someone please tell me how to acheive my goal, and why my attempts aren't working?
irc2000 2017-02-03 07:11:59
why would I want debian (instead of archlinux) for a webserver?
teraflops 2017-02-03 07:12:16
use whatever you want
SynrG 2017-02-03 07:12:23
!why debian
dpkg 2017-02-03 07:12:23
Debian strives to maintain your freedom whilst also paying close attention to the technical aspects of making a great OS. Debian is stable, upgradable and well tested. See also http://www.debian.org/intro/free http://www.debian.org/intro/why_debian http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/talks/why_debian/ http://www.aboutdebian.com/ . As an added bonus, you get to ask questions in #debian.
TomTomTo1 2017-02-03 07:15:01
iron_houzi: show ud the command and output of your installation attempt and the outputs of apt-cache policy; apt-cache policy docker-engine libdevmapper1.02.1; cat /etc/apt/sources.list; (plus whatever file you created in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ for docker). paste all that information to paste.debian.net please.

awesome debian does not support ppas like ugly ubuntu...im I right or mistaking?
dontknow 2017-02-03 07:19:55
right
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:20:15
unborn: you can still use them, but we don't support them.
greycat 2017-02-03 07:20:52
I can't imagine ubuntu actually "supports" them either.
unborn 2017-02-03 07:21:07
me too greycat
greycat 2017-02-03 07:21:11
Maybe "encourages" was the word you wanted...?
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:21:36
unborn: Just used the incorrect word. I was following the official Docker install guide https://docs.docker.com/engine/installation/linux/debian/ -- Would it be a frankendebian to install Docker via this method, over the Docker version in stretch?
unborn 2017-02-03 07:21:42
dondelelcaro: sure.. once you install them - please seek support from someone else
unborn 2017-02-03 07:22:16
iron_houzi: ah docker.. why not ask docker support in their official channels?#
missmbob 2017-02-03 07:22:24

iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:22:58

unborn 2017-02-03 07:23:16
missmbob: - understand and? the policy you all teached me was avoid anything what is not debian based...
unborn 2017-02-03 07:24:14
iron_houzi: of course not..

iron_houzi: i have no idea about docker.
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:24:47
iron_houzi: you're probably better off installing the version of docker.io which we distribute
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:24:56
iron_houzi: unless you need a newer version of docker than we distribute.
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:25:12
dondelelcaro: that's the point .. 1.5 is jurrasic
TomTomTo1 2017-02-03 07:25:24
will i get the information i asked for?
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:26:13
TomTomTo1: I was working on it .. do you think I can get docker 1.13 on Debian without breaking Debian?
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:26:19
iron_houzi: it looks like docker.io isn't even in testing, so that might be teh only way to get it
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:26:38
iron_houzi: alternatively, I'm certain that paultag would love help keeping the docker.io packages up to date in debian.
TomTomTo1 2017-02-03 07:26:47
iron_houzi: yes, the upstream builds usually work fine. which debian version are you using?
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:26:50
iron_houzi: 1.11.2 is in unstable, but it's affected by CVE-2016-9962
dondelelcaro 2017-02-03 07:26:59
(which is why there isn't currently a version in testing)
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:27:07
TomTomTo1: I'm on stretch
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:27:57
.. since I also want "shiny" Python 3.5 ..
TomTomTo1 2017-02-03 07:28:02
can't vouch for that, but it works fine on jessie.

need 3.5 at least..
TomTomTo1 2017-02-03 07:29:50
ah, I use python-virtualenv if i ever need a different python interpreter.

I'm encountering a dependency resolution issue where apt-get needs to pick one of two versions of a package to install, and it picks the wrong one and doesn't seem to even attempt to use the other one
atrigent 2017-02-03 07:30:12
is this a known class of issues?
iron_houzi 2017-02-03 07:30:35
