#debian channel featuring petn-randall, BluesKaj, Markow, ychaouche_fromdo, seoner, plasmoduck, and 13 others.

Guifle 2017-03-09 03:51:14
petn-randall, ah, nice :) is it the same firmware as in jessie; 'iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode'? and which one of those shown is required; 5000-2,3,4,5 ?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:51:32
seoner: LUKS+LVM is completely fine for that. Just remember that with encryption, if you loose the password, the data is forever gone.
darxmurf 2017-03-09 03:51:46
plasmoduck: did you try with cryptsetup ?
darxmurf 2017-03-09 03:51:52
it's not a GUI but not that complicated
seoner 2017-03-09 03:52:01
petn-randall: Okay, thank you.
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:52:11
BluesKaj, ah, I see
petn-randall 2017-03-09 03:52:11
seoner: Also, if the LUKS header, which contains the password-protected key, is damaged, the data is also gone. So I recommend making regular backups.
BluesKaj 2017-03-09 03:53:02
Guifle, so I'm happy with stretch on the desktop and jessie on the laptop for now
snowkrash 2017-03-09 03:53:17
jhutchins_wk, do i have to remove sendmail?
Guifle 2017-03-09 03:53:55
petn-randall, are the two machines both laptops?
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:00:49
petn-randall, sounds good :) currently post-installation update-upgrade doesnt happen in jessie, though. is there nothing to install, or am I missing a step?
erdave 2017-03-09 04:00:49
I mean: made an "apt update" and get the list of actual packages from the repos, and then tell synaptic to generate the script with the needed packages.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:02:14
Guifle: What do you mean with that?
bluss 2017-03-09 04:02:30
erdave: I don't have any experience with that, but https://debian-administration.org/article/648/Offline_Package_Management_for_APT seems just like the tool
bluss 2017-03-09 04:02:39
erdave: maybe there are other ones of the same kind
erdave 2017-03-09 04:03:03
bluss: I'll take a look, thanks!
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:03:09
bluss: apt-offline is the way to go, yes.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:03:24
err, erdave ^^^
bluss 2017-03-09 04:03:54
hm the first question is how easy is it to install apt-offline offline
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:04:17
petn-randall, do I need to add 'contrib' and 'non-free' to all lines in sources.list?
Markow 2017-03-09 04:04:26
Hi
Markow 2017-03-09 04:04:48
I just want to say, username: "user" and password "live" indeed works! lol
Markow 2017-03-09 04:04:56
for the Live Debian USB / CD
Markow 2017-03-09 04:04:59
amazing
erdave 2017-03-09 04:05:21
bluss: jajajaja... yeah, I guess I'll have to find it out...
Markow 2017-03-09 04:05:21
Now who should I contact at Debian to place this info on their Live CD web page?
babilen 2017-03-09 04:05:46
Markow: #debian-www or #debian-live on irc.oftc.net maybe
Markow 2017-03-09 04:05:46
It really should be on their website, because who would ever guess this username / password combo?
Markow 2017-03-09 04:06:19
babilen: I'll look for contact info on their Live CD website, should be some e-mail address there
Markow 2017-03-09 04:07:05
Another thing I did when I logged in: It was required to 'sudo' into "root", so I disabled that by: passwd -d root
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-09 04:07:06
Guifle: Only if you want programs from those repos. Contrib includes software that may rely on non-free packages.
Markow 2017-03-09 04:07:09
;)
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-09 04:07:37
Markow: It's a little inconvenient to find, but it's not impossible.
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:07:51
speak test
jhutchins_wk 2017-03-09 04:07:54
Markow: There is documentation.
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:08:07
anyone seen "speak test" ?
Markow 2017-03-09 04:08:23
jhutchins_wk: It's really unfortunate that login info is not placed on the download page as it is pretty pertinent
Markow 2017-03-09 04:08:59
jhutchins_wk: That Live Debian 'standard' non-gui cd makes an excellent utility app
snowkrash 2017-03-09 04:09:05
jhutchins_wk, i see
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:09:10
hello wreck_boo
snowkrash 2017-03-09 04:09:12
i only have ssmtp
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:09:13
jhutchins_wk after install nothing is upgraded, that's strange. have all packages been made ready through installation only? that's why I wondered whether repos were maybe missing
snowkrash 2017-03-09 04:09:22
it even connects to my smtp
Markow 2017-03-09 04:09:24
jhutchins_wk: Which is why Debian should readily provide the username / password info for it
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:09:30
how can i decompile a debian pacake
snowkrash 2017-03-09 04:09:34
but tries to send root@localhost
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:09:51
wreck_boo, i believe it's a xz archive
plasmoduck 2017-03-09 04:10:02
how can I install a free flashplugin
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:10:07
no a deb file
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:10:28
how can i decompile it
teraflops 2017-03-09 04:10:58
wreck_boo: you meant decompile a binary or decompress a debian package?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:11:04
wreck_boo, a deb file is a xz file
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:11:15
only with a .deb extension isntead of .xz
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:11:24
try ar x on it
teraflops 2017-03-09 04:11:34
because decompile!=decompress
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:11:38
ok yzchaouche_fromdo
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:11:44
how can i?
Markow 2017-03-09 04:11:45
Anyway, thanks again for the assistance on this channel!
BluesKaj 2017-03-09 04:11:52
Guifle, hope you did apt update after changing the sources.list
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:12:20
try ar x on it
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:12:20
BluesKaj, sure
teraflops 2017-03-09 04:12:25
that's for unpack it
BluesKaj 2017-03-09 04:12:28
Guifle, i had to ask :-)
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:12:35
Guifle: Show us the problem you're seeing, I'm having a difficult time to follow what you're talking about.
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:12:50
BluesKaj, yes, sure :)
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:13:05
I am on rescue mode and wonder if I should select sda5 or Assemble RAID ?
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:13:07
ok so a package of say squid i shld try: ar x squid...........deb?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:13:12
I have hardware RAID
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:13:19
petn-randall, I just wondered why apt-get update/upgrade doesn't update-upgrade anything
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:13:23
didn't
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:13:33
wreck_boo, uyp
Markow 2017-03-09 04:13:34
Btw, what's the best ZFS to use for Debian?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:13:38
yup*
Markow 2017-03-09 04:13:38
There are several
Markow 2017-03-09 04:13:49
ZoL ?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:13:52
Guifle: It does, but only when there is something to upgrade.
BluesKaj 2017-03-09 04:14:00
Guifle, do sudo apt dist-upgrade
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:14:18
petn-randall, but right after install there is always something to upgrade, no?
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:14:26
BluesKaj, yes, I tried it, too
Markow 2017-03-09 04:14:48
Another question, on Debian, what's more bleeding edge: "SiD (Unstable)" or "Experimental" ?
bluss 2017-03-09 04:15:08
Markow: they are not the same kind of thing
TimurTheLame 2017-03-09 04:15:26
Markow, you should probably use sid
Markow 2017-03-09 04:15:31
I know they are not the same
BluesKaj 2017-03-09 04:15:43
check your package manager sources, make sure they're changed , Markow
teraflops 2017-03-09 04:15:56
none of them. Markow what does bleeding edge mean for you?
Markow 2017-03-09 04:16:09
teraflops: Most recent version of the packages
bluss 2017-03-09 04:16:11
Markow: they are not even the same kind, experimental is just carrying a few experimental packages, not a complete debian system
Markow 2017-03-09 04:16:55
Probably sid
Markow 2017-03-09 04:17:00
ok
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:18:46
now to build a debain package with python what do i do
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:19:02
all the source code are written in python...
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:19:10
grub should be installed in master boot record of first drive, not in a partition, right ?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:19:18
I have only Debian on this system I want to rescue
TimurTheLame 2017-03-09 04:19:37
ychaouche_fromdo, yep
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:19:41
3 partitions /dev/sda1 for /, /dev/sda2 for swap and /dev/sda5 for /var
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:19:56
ok thanks TimurTheLame
TimurTheLame 2017-03-09 04:19:59
ychaouche_fromdo, on /dev/sda
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:20:44
I hope this will fix it
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:22:02
Guifle: It already downloads the current packages from the repositories during installation.
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:22:58
petn-randall, ah, then that's why
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:24:04
wreck_boo: Tell us about your goal, not what you think the solution is.
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:24:39
petn-randall, as for wifi, which package do I need to install? during install I was shown 'iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode' (and same with 5000-2,3,4,5)
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:24:46
reinstalled grub, still the same erroneous UUID in the ALERT message at boot time and my debian won't boot.
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:24:55
Where is it taking this uuid from ?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:25:09
ychaouche_fromdo: /etc/fstab
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:25:32
ychaouche_fromdo: If you updated that, you might need to update the initramfs with 'update-initramfs -k all'.
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:26:14
i have built a large block of cold written in python i want to distribute it as a debian package not as a module since it relies on a lot of debian binaries
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:26:20
how do i do it
wreck_boo 2017-03-09 04:26:21
?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:26:35
petn-randall, the /etc/fstab is emtpy at the initramfs prompt, but non-empty when I boot from the rescue CD and mount /dev/sda1 on /
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:26:39
Guifle: There are several packages named 'firmware-', check from the description which one you need. There's no downside in installing a firmware package you don't need.
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:27:01
petn-randall, the one in /dev/sda1 includes the correct uuid
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:27:02
ychaouche_fromdo: Yes, of course I'm referring to the /etc/fstab in your system.
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:27:21
petn-randall, well at boot it seems it's not reading from it.
Guifle 2017-03-09 04:27:39
petn-randall, but the above ones were shown to me during install, and I was asked if I had them on a removable media. so one of these must be correct, I presume=?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:27:49
ychaouche_fromdo: Then your initramfs needs updating (see above).
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:28:06
petn-randall, from the prompt or from the rescue CD ?
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:28:19
ychaouche_fromdo: From within the chroot.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:28:41
!tell ychaouche_fromdo -about chroot
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:28:47
ychaouche_fromdo: check dpkg's msg
rmrfchik 2017-03-09 04:29:23
where I can ask about icedove->thunderbird transition?
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:29:43
oh ok from the CD
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:30:59
wreck_boo, I'm sure that debian packaging is documented somewhere on the Internet.
petn-randall 2017-03-09 04:33:15

Guifle 2017-03-09 04:40:11
thank you all for your help! I will leave shortly and be back in a bit :)
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:40:33

ychaouche_fromdo: ^^^
ychaouche_fromdo 2017-03-09 04:41:51
petn-randall, for some reason I also couldn't configure the network, I also had an error message about a required proprietary driver in order for my NICs to be operational
