Hey, is it safe to use testdisk to another partition or should i use a different drive?
NewKingKong71 2017-03-04 23:51:11
For recover files deleted in another partition
NewKingKong71 2017-03-04 23:57:00
Anyone knows? I don't have an external drive. I only have a 16gb pendrive, while i need to recover gb60
jrgpfoo 2017-03-04 23:57:00
hey, when is stretch coming out?
missmbob 2017-03-04 23:57:16
couople of months probably
missmbob 2017-03-04 23:57:54
or more. when the green light goes green. https://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/
GNU\colossus 2017-03-04 23:58:08
those of you running their own mail service, which anti-spam solutions (shipping in Debian) do you use? since dspam was dropped from jessie, I'm having a hard time to choose.
camh 2017-03-04 23:58:56
jrgpfoo: stretch was frozen 4 weeks ago. historical freeze times can be found at https://wiki.debian.org/DebianReleases
camh 2017-03-04 23:59:19
make your own guess how long the freeze will be
jrgpfoo 2017-03-05 00:00:43
wow I didn't realize the freeze could be hundreds of days long. various news articles made it sound like the release was "imminent"
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:09:24
Anyone can help me?

No
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:18:12
testdisk, or at least photorec will recover up until the point that you run out of space. Without changing the source drive. Now if that drive is failing and not just corrupted, don't use that. Otherwise get a bigger drive, they're cheap these days.
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:19:49
Shadow_7_: i have 2 partition. I was asking if i can recover files deleted on partition 1 with testdisk on partition
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:19:55
Is it safe?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:19:55
NewKingKong71: Also, I don't know if you can advance past the point that it runs out of space.
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:20:21
It would be safe to do said things on a dd copy of the drive
tdn 2017-03-05 00:20:24
I am upgrading from debian 7 to debian 8. During grub-pc configuration, I was asked a question about which devices to install grub on. I checked all available as I was unsure and that seemed the safe choice. Then grub install failed. I have the original question and my response + lsblk + the error message here: https://imgur.com/a/lxw9q How do I proceed ?
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:20:47
But i only have a 16gb pendri
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:21:06
I need to recover 60gb of pure gtaV modded
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:21:24
NewKingKong71: You could combine several smaller drives into one big one with lvm and other things. Or use an nfs mount, although networks, even gigabit are slow as molasses
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:22:07
But i only have that drive
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:22:29
tdn: i would assume you want to install grub to /dev/sda (a question mark here ... no clue about lvm, raid and similar voodoo)
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:22:37
If only there was a man page for friends. *sigh*
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:23:17
Wut?
tdn 2017-03-05 00:23:41
n4dir, I would think grub needs to be loaded before lvm and raid is happening
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:23:55
tdn: i would think the same, but am not sure.
Guifle 2017-03-05 00:24:02
hello, can you help me please? I cannot make Samba work
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:24:14
Well, i can redownload everything in about 3 days, so i want to know if it worth to try to recover in another partition from the one where ive deleted gta
tdn 2017-03-05 00:24:18
n4dir, but if you are right, that means it should be safe to continue, right? Because grub did not seem to fail on sda and sdb
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:24:20
if no one has a "do it exactly like that", i would simply try /dev/sda , tdn
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:24:38
tdn: grub-pc is legacy??? not grub2. I tend to use another grub on another disc to boot the install. And then install grub to the / according to mount
tdn 2017-03-05 00:24:48
n4dir, the server is 2000km away from me so I would like to be sure that it does boot
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:24:53
tdn: i never did such, i install it to only one device. i would think so
tdn 2017-03-05 00:25:04
Shadow_7_, I have no idea, I just use what is installed
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:25:17
I think ill try
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:25:20
tdn: ah, i see. Then wait for someone who knows 100% for sure. try & error is not a good approach then
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:25:26
tdn: Sometimes when it's a flash drive or whatnot you have to --force the grub to install. # grub -f /dev/sdXYZ
tdn 2017-03-05 00:25:43
Shadow_7_, did you see the linked images?
tdn 2017-03-05 00:26:10
Shadow_7_, this is HDDs in md raid-1 with lvm on top
tdn 2017-03-05 00:26:25
Shadow_7_, lsblk is even included in the images
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:26:26
tdn: yes... 2x 3tb drives, and a lvm one.
tdn 2017-03-05 00:26:47
Shadow_7_, exactly
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:26:50
tdn: blkid might help clear up what's there
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:27:36
partitioning for > 2TB requires GPT
tdn 2017-03-05 00:28:12
Shadow_7_, is that a problem for grub? I would assume GPT is in place if that is required because this system has been working and booting fine for years. :)
tdn 2017-03-05 00:28:26
Shadow_7_, and I just want it to continue working and booting after upgrade to debian 8 :)
tdn 2017-03-05 00:28:42
Shadow_7_, not sure what to do with blkid
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:28:46
GPT maintains it's stuff in multiple places so a traditional MBR install doesn't hurt it (much).
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:28:53
as far as grub goes
tdn 2017-03-05 00:29:20
There seems to be GPT on /dev/sda and sdb
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:29:21
tdn: blkid lists your drives / partitions and usable bits like UUID / LABEL stuffs
tdn 2017-03-05 00:29:44
Shadow_7_, yes, but what do I use that for in this context? :)
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:30:39
you only need grub on one bootable device. Which could be a usb stick and relatively unrelated
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:31:22
What's the percentage of recovery files? If i run testisk in a different partition, the partition where i deleted files, should be untouched, right?
tdn 2017-03-05 00:31:33
Shadow_7_, sure, but does this mean that when I selected all devices, and it did not seem to fail on sda and sdb, then both of these are bootable and booting will work and it is safe to continue?
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:31:44
uh, well, from the top of my head you will also need to be sure that the PC boots from that device. So you will want to install grub to the device it boots from per default
tdn 2017-03-05 00:32:14
NewKingKong71, please only work on a disk image and not the actual disk
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:32:16
tdn: well, the MBR basically points at the /boot/ of where you where when you installed grub.
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:32:58
I tend to select NONE on that screen, and use grub-install && update-grub on the CLI
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:33:03
But i can't
tdn 2017-03-05 00:33:07
Shadow_7_, ok, so does this mean that when I selected all devices, and it did not seem to fail on sda and sdb, then both of these are bootable and booting will work and it is safe to continue?
NewKingKong71 2017-03-05 00:33:15
Is there a possibility to success?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:33:33
tdn: only the last one might be relavent to booting if you select all
tdn 2017-03-05 00:33:51
Shadow_7_, the last one? /dev/md0?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:34:05
and it could be problematic if any disk does not use traditional MBR / GPT partitioning
teraflops 2017-03-05 00:34:05
tdn: it looks like md0 is a sw raid, if yes install grub in both /dev/sda and /dev/sdb
tdn 2017-03-05 00:34:32
teraflops, md0 is software raid, yes.
tdn 2017-03-05 00:34:54
teraflops, as far as I understand, grub did install on sda and sdb. So it should be safe to continue, right?
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:35:05
software by lvm? zfs? ???
tdn 2017-03-05 00:35:12
Shadow_7_, md
Shadow_7_ 2017-03-05 00:35:19
hardware?
tdn 2017-03-05 00:35:22
Shadow_7_, seen in 'lsblk'
teraflops 2017-03-05 00:35:22
yeah, anyway you can always fix it using the installer iso
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:35:44
teraflops: the problem is the server is not locally accessible
teraflops 2017-03-05 00:39:17
tdn: if you dont believe what I said (which is fine since you must not trust random guys on the internet), go search for info about "install grub in sw raid"
tdn 2017-03-05 00:42:08
teraflops, I already chose to continue :)
tdn 2017-03-05 00:42:33
n4dir, no, not on a Sunday
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:42:36
fingers crossed ...
n4dir 2017-03-05 00:44:33
tdn: do you have to reboot at all (before tomorrow?)
