#debian channel featuring benaiah, Guifle, DesertRock, c-c, jasonwc, ScottE,

ScottE: Yeah, there's a bug report for ZFS on that issue. 0.6.5.9 supports kernels through 4.9, so it shouldn't be an issue if using the stock kernel on Stretch. Only becomes an issue if you're using a kernel from backports as well.
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:47:26
I'm attempting to update from 6 to 8. I'm getting this error https://hastebin.com/linutaxahi.pas Any hints?
ScottE 2017-03-06 13:48:15
jasonwc: good point, stock kernel should be just fine
c-c 2017-03-06 13:48:21
DesertRock: ok, did you do dist-upgrade twice, or just edit the sources.list?
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:50:05
c-c: Yeah, I did upgrade once, got a package error, investigated it, removed it, and now am getting this one. To upgrade I edited sources.list and then ran apt-get upgrade
ScottE 2017-03-06 13:50:12
Although the kernel is still a moving target in stretch, so I have run into this (understandable and expected at this stage, in testing)
c-c 2017-03-06 13:50:55
DesertRock: lets recap. You did dist-upgrade, then apt-get update and upgrade. Then, edited sources.list?
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:53:08
Haha, nope. 1) Edited sources.list 2) update 3) upgrade 4) error on mime-support, removed it 5) failing on startpar now. *) scattered apt-get install -f because I saw it suggested in similar cases.
c-c 2017-03-06 13:54:00
DesertRock: I recommend you backup your files (home), and install Debian Jessie from image.
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:54:56
c-c: Fair enough. Is there a particular reason? I just want to know more of why I'm doing something before I do it.
c-c 2017-03-06 13:55:06
https://www.debian.org/releases/wheezy/amd64/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:55:59
c-c: where should I look in there for why I need to reinstall now?
c-c 2017-03-06 13:56:13
Also, I guess I would attempt: if lazy: 0. backup everything. 1. apt-get dist-upgrade && apt-get update && apt-get upgrade. If 1 works, reboot, and then redo 1.
c-c 2017-03-06 13:57:40
DesertRock: basically from the above link the backup, 4.4.4, 4.4.5, then 4.4.4 again to ensure it worked.
DesertRock 2017-03-06 13:58:37
Makes sense, doing that now
c-c 2017-03-06 14:01:36
DesertRock: just make sure you end up in debian stable called Jessie :D
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:02:17
c-c: thats the goal :D
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:02:36
Just glad I backed up before all of this, just wish I had a snapshot of the box
c-c 2017-03-06 14:06:32
DesertRock: if in doubt, stop.
c-c 2017-03-06 14:07:07
Backup. Then proceed again.
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:08:24
c-c: yeah, no kidding
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:09:38
So, I just got an error that only happens "in theory" (unless I'm misreading the manpage) https://hastebin.com/gopacofepa.pas
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:10:15
Going to try to install just that package
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:11:07
Which fails install -f needs to get run
DesertRock 2017-03-06 14:16:23
Seems like perhaps I should just do a reinstall
Guifle 2017-03-06 14:17:53
hello everyone, I used tar -xvf for an .xz file of 1gb size, and the process stopped for lack of space, since the resulting file was 70gb! what should I suspect here?
benaiah 2017-03-06 14:44:13
I'm having trouble getting the Dyalog APL keyboard enabled in Debian. I installed Dyalog with dpkg, which the website seemed to indicate should install the layout. The /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/apl file exists. localectl list-x11-keymap-layouts doesn't have an apl entry, though. any ideas?
