jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:45:38
c-c I should mention that I tried backporting grub from Stretch to Jessie but the build dependencies also could not be satisfied
c-c 2017-03-06 11:46:57
so, stretch openpht won't work?
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:47:18
There is no binary for Stretch yet
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:47:25
If there was, that's what I would be doing
c-c 2017-03-06 11:47:28
can you checkinstall it?
c-c 2017-03-06 11:48:05
ie. download, make, checkinstall, dpkg https://wiki.debian.org/CheckInstall
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:50:54
Perhaps, but someone mentioned it took a day to compile on a dual socket server. OpenPHT can be compiled as a standalone package but it appears that the source package (105MB) is meant to build an entire embedded Linux environment with PlexHomeTheater. Someone mentioned it took 24 hours to build on a dual socket server. :/
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:51:07
I need to see if it's possible to just build the standalone client
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:51:18
the readme isn't that clear
c-c 2017-03-06 11:53:27
I imagine openpht is like 300 packages, so, trying to frankensystem that will give you headaches
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:53:32
c-c So, you think it is never acceptable to install testing/unstable packages on Stable, even with package pinning?
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:53:54
Grub seems to have quite limited dependencies
c-c 2017-03-06 11:54:45
I often mix systems, but only when its something I can wrap my head around (1, max 2 deps, install diff versions of the same) http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/210692/i-need-to-install-two-different-versions-of-a-library-on-a-debian-based-distro
psychoticwarrior 2017-03-06 11:55:16
anybody run kali linux?
Atm0spher1c 2017-03-06 11:55:33
jasonwc, why not just backport from unstable?
c-c 2017-03-06 11:55:44
jasonwc: perhaps you could contact the openpht project and see if you could get stuff happening
Atm0spher1c 2017-03-06 11:55:44
or use docker if you need to mix things
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:55:53
Atm0spher1c: build dependencies cannot be met
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:56:06
I tried rebuilding grub
PryMar56 2017-03-06 11:56:15
jasonwc, how long to build grub2?
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:56:32
I never got to that point. apt said build dependencies could not be met
Atm0spher1c 2017-03-06 11:57:19
I haven't been following the whole conversation, but have you tried docker?
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:57:22
c-c What specifically troubles you about installing the dependencies first from Jessie and then just installing the grub packages from Stretch?
PryMar56 2017-03-06 11:57:26
jasonwc, many of the build depends are for cross-compile, like different flavors of qemu and also libxen
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:57:27
Atm0spher1c I have not
c-c 2017-03-06 11:58:04
jasonwc you about?
c-c 2017-03-06 11:58:21
jasonwc: try it and you will see it will mostly trouble your system
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:58:45
c-c I was planning to do it in a test VM first. I'm just curious why you are against it.
c-c 2017-03-06 11:59:16
jasonwc: see what apt says
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:59:17
c-c I should note that I just installed this systm yesterday. My server is 100% Jessie and was running Wheezy until a month ago.
n4dir 2017-03-06 11:59:29
imho it simply doesn't make much sense to add testing packages to stable, cause then you won't have a stable system anymore
c-c 2017-03-06 11:59:29
lol suddenly its *my* problem
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:59:37
c-c My goal was to turn a system that was running embedded OpenPHT into a backup ZFS server
n4dir 2017-03-06 11:59:46
you might just as well go directly for either testing or unstable (or a mix of testing unstable)
jasonwc 2017-03-06 11:59:56
c-c No, I'm sorry. That is not what I meant at all.
c-c 2017-03-06 11:59:58
jasonwc: I resign from your problem and your goals and any question or problem you may have or have had. Ciao!
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:00:49
c-c I wasn't suggesting that you were wrong. I was asking for your opinion. I apologize if my comments came off as suggesting otherwise.
c-c 2017-03-06 12:02:11
jasonwc: well you will have to apt a little to find out. Sometimes it works well, sometimes it deadlocks apt/deps
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:02:13
n4dir: I'm actually fine running Stretch but there's a Catch-22 wherein ZFS won't work on Jessie without Grub from Unstable and OpenPHT (without docker or something like it) won't run on Stretch. From what I'm reading, compiling it will be a nightmare.
c-c 2017-03-06 12:02:15
I really go now
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:02:41
c-c Sorry for offending you. It really wasn't my intention. I appreciate the help you provided.
psychoticwarrior 2017-03-06 12:02:58

TomTomTosch 2017-03-06 12:03:24
jasonwc: what are you trying to do right now? backport grub or fix your dependency conflict issues?
n4dir 2017-03-06 12:03:33
jasonwc: ah, i see. my fault then
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:04:02
TomTomTosch: Whichever is easier. I have no strong preference between Jessie and Stretch. I would like to use ZFS as root and have a working OpenPHT. That's about all.
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:04:32
TomTomTosch: I have been running Debian Stable for years and haven't had to backport packages. So, I'm asking for advice.
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:05:04
TomTomTosch: The easiest route is probably going with LVM+mdadm for rootfs on Jessie. Then everything "just works"
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:05:13
But I did this, in part, to try ZFS on root
TomTomTosch 2017-03-06 12:06:19
jasonwc: if you already are in an inconsistent state you can either do a full upgrade or try to downgrade the packages from unstables, that you already installed. this could be more time-consuming, but it's your decision, which release you want to use.
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:06:19
TomTomTosch: The dependency conflict issue should be fairly easy to test in a VM. I'm just worried it will cause unforeseen issues in the future.
TomTomTosch 2017-03-06 12:06:23
s/unstables/unstable/
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:07:23
TomTomTosch: I actually can simply rollback to Jessie with a single commmand - zfs rollback RPOOL/root/debian@pre-stretch
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:07:32
TomTomTosch: and this is why I want ZFS :p
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:08:15
TomTomTosch: I chose the "full upgrade" path last night, and now the system is fully Stretch. I then discovered the incompatibility with OpenPHT.
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:08:26
But I can return to Jessie with a reboot to initramfs and a zfs rollback
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:09:54
jasonwc: you could stick with stretch and run PHT in a docker container
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:10:08
I've never used Docker before
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:10:12
What's the downsides?
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:10:37
So, it's basically a container with OpenPHT and all its required deps seperate from the main system?
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:10:42
i prefer containers to keep my base OS clean/lean etc, you just have a bit of a learning curve
teraflops 2017-03-06 12:11:19
why docker? why not e.g systemd-nspawn?
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:12:21
teraflops: sure ive not used it yet, ive been in the docker boat using mesos+marathon thats all :)
teraflops 2017-03-06 12:13:21
`Kevin: np it's just stretch has an up to date systemd version and nspawn does not require installing additional sw
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:13:23
jasonwc: its a bare minimum OS install in a container using something such as debootstrap or a public debian image if you must .. then instructions such as apt-get install package1 package2 etc... then you can execute the container which runs whatever daemon
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:13:24
Kevin: Is this what I want? https://github.com/RasPlex/Dockerfiles/blob/master/README.md
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:14:11
so, the code is still running natively, but it's basically running from its own OS container - keeping the main OS clean
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:14:26
Sorry - I'm reading Wiki, but I haven't done anything with containers before
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:14:29
teraflops: thanks ill look into that :)
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:16:31
jasonwc: start small to understand whats going on, build something really basic http://odewahn.github.io/docker-jumpstart/building-images-with-dockerfiles.html many other things exist besides docker but look into containers in general if interested
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:17:04
Plex actually releases official Docker images for the server - just not the client
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:17:05
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/250499/official-plex-media-server-docker-images-getting-started
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:17:10
I have the server running on Jessie
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:17:18
interesting stuff
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:17:55
graphical clients are a bit more work in containers due to X but its doable
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:19:12
makes sense
jasonwc 2017-03-06 12:19:27
Thanks for the advice
`Kevin 2017-03-06 12:19:38
yep goodluck . <- afk
