Nazara 2017-03-06 02:51:08
JohnA: turns out my router was being silly, what threw me off was that windows was literally just working
Nazara 2017-03-06 02:51:30
unfortunately I can't help with wicd, haven't used it
throwthecheese 2017-03-06 02:54:48
Hi
throwthecheese 2017-03-06 02:55:57
Can I use the full disk for partitioning if I use win32-loader for installing Debian?
zykotick9 2017-03-06 02:58:05
JohnA: have you selected the "Automatically connect to this network" in wicd's option for each network?
babilen 2017-03-06 02:58:28
wicd is still alive?
throwthecheese 2017-03-06 02:58:43
Does the Debian installer run from RAM?
tx 2017-03-06 02:58:55
babilen: check the package stats
zykotick9 2017-03-06 02:58:57
babilen: it is :| i like it as a console network manager
Nazara 2017-03-06 02:59:18
nmcli and nmtui work pretty well for that too
zykotick9 2017-03-06 03:01:56
Nazara: i must say, i expected my "apt install network-manager" to want to pull in a LOT of additional packages... turns out, it only wants to install seven. which is totally reasonable, so perhaps i should give n-m another try sometime soon.
Nazara 2017-03-06 03:02:16
yeah I use it on my buildroot router
Nazara 2017-03-06 03:02:20
it's pretty nice
Brigo 2017-03-06 03:04:50
zykotick9, n-m got a log better lately.
zykotick9 2017-03-06 03:05:59
Brigo: i must say, it's my personal poor history with n-m that has been keeping me away... but i really will give n-m another shot in the near future. thanks for the update
Brigo 2017-03-06 03:06:26
zykotick9, almost everybody has a poor history with n-m. :)
Brigo 2017-03-06 03:06:44
only exception those who have never used it :D
zykotick9 2017-03-06 03:06:55
;)
dTal 2017-03-06 03:07:25
I remember when replacing network manager with wicd was de rigeur for a new system, along with diking out pulseaudio
tw 2017-03-06 03:12:26
It still isn't?
tw 2017-03-06 03:12:47
I think disabiling it is still part of the RH server setup guide.
teraflops 2017-03-06 03:15:04
RHEL 7 uses NM by default I don't think they recommend disabling NM
dTal 2017-03-06 03:16:09
why would you ever use it for a server?
jelly 2017-03-06 03:16:32
it's the default
dTal 2017-03-06 03:17:08
surely that's terribly overcomplicated for something that probably has a static IP and is accessed mostly through SSH :p
jelly 2017-03-06 03:18:14
not really, because such a setup will use redhat's ifcfg (= text config file) backend which is almost what an admin is already used to
tw 2017-03-06 03:18:28
My mistake, it doesn't get installed by default anymore in RHEL7 unless you install desktop or network developer roles.
